The bars of the first region being circumferentially and laterally spaced-apart from the bars of the second region.

The ceramic has greater than 0.2 weight percent (w/o) magnesia, greater than 0.2 w/o yttria, where the sum of magnesia and yttria is less than 5 w/o. The ceramic preferably has less than 0.2 v/o porosity.

The cutting insert has opposite leading and trailing face portions joined by a side surface which has a leading side relief portion adjacent the leading face portion and a trailing side relief portion adjacent the trailing face portion. The trailing side relief portion, which extends from the leading face portion a distance equal to between about one-third to two-thirds the thickness of the insert, has a greater relief angle that the leading side relief portion, which extends from the trailing face portion a distance equal to between about one-third to about two-thirds the thickness of the insert.

A plurality of cutter inserts are brazed to the bit body at the periphery of the open end of the concavity. The disc blade includes parallel spaced flat round front and rear surfaces having a central cylindrical opening. The front surface tapers radially outwardly to the rear surface thereby defining a common outer rim having a knife edge. A plurality of notches are spaced circumferentially along the front surface of the disc blade and inwardly from the outer edge of the front surface of the disc blade.     Abstract: A rotatable cutting bit for insertion into the bore of a bit holder wherein the cutting bit includes a bit body with opposite forward and rearward ends, a hard insert at the forward end of the bit body, and an enlarged mediate portion which has a rearwardly facing shoulder. The cutting bit further has a rearward shank which contains a reduced diameter portion. The cutting bit carries a rotatable sleeve on the shank whereby the sleeve surrounds the shank between the shoulder and the reduced diameter portion. The cutting bit also carries a rotatable washer on the shank adjacent the shoulder of the bit body. A keeper ring is captive within the reduced diameter portion of the shank.

The body may be embedded in and bonded with a second steel matrix to form a wear resistant composite. The second steel matrix has a melting point at least 200 degrees F. greater than the melting point of the first steel matrix, thereby facilitating a metallurgical bond between the surface of the wear resistant body and the second steel matrix. The composite structure is particularly suitable for earthmoving and other severe mechanical applications.
