Abstract: A process is described for preparing 3-exomethylene cephalosporanic acid derivatives for use in the synthesis of cephalosporin antibiotics such as ceftibuten. The process comprises electrochemical reduction of a compound of the formula (IV) ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.3 is CH.sub.3 C(O)--; ##STR2## is an optional sulfoxide group; n is 2 or 3; R.sup.1 is H and R is H or NHR.sup.2, where R.sup.2 is H or a protecting group selected from C.sub.6 H.sub.5 CH.sub.2 OC(O)--, C.sub.6 H.sub.5 C(O)-- or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy-C(O)--; or wherein R and R.sup.1 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached comprise --C(O)--, and produces the desired 3-exomethylene compounds with low levels of the corresponding 3-methyl tautomers.

Abstract: The compound of the formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, and R.sup.8 are as defined herein, are described. These compounds are antibacterial agents.

The press comprises a planar material having a surface; a center fold line essentially dividing said planar material into two parts, each part having in the surface of said planar material, a depression such that when the planar material is folded along said centerfold line, the two depressions align to define a closed void that is substantially egg-shaped; each depression further having at least one predetermined locus for puncturing.

Abstract: A method for cleaning elastomeric articles comprising contacting the elastomeric article with at least one supercritical fluid under conditions and for a time sufficient to remove the phthalates and/or polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contained therein. Elastomeric articles having a reduced phthalte and/or PAH content prepared by the above method are also claimed. Such elastomeric articles having reduced phthalate contents can be utilized as gaskets, valves, seats, flaps or plugs in metered dose delivery devices such as aerosols for demanding medicinal and pharmaceutical uses.

Abstract: A soft, tacky polysiloxane elastomer characterized as having: a tackiness of 10-450 grams as determined by a polyken probe tack tester or 0-10 cm (0-4 inches) as determined by a rolling ball tack tester and a tensile strength of 0.14-5.52 mega Pascals (20-800 pounds/square inch), a minimum elongation of 250-1100 percent and a tear strength of 0.88-35.2 kN/m (5-200 pound/square inch) The soft, tacky elastomer can be made into various cushioning devices, with or without a topcover. Representative cushioning devices include an arch support pad, a metatarsal pad, a heel cushion, sheet padding, a full-length insole, a three quarter length insole, a half insole, a toe-crest pad, a heel liner, an elbow pad, a corn pad, a callus pad, a blister pad, a bunion pad or a toe pad.

Abstract: A method for treating onychomycosis without drilling a hole in a nail plate or without daily scraping of the nail, comprising topically administering to the afflicted nail of a mammali) a medicated device comprising salicylic acid or a salt, ester or mixture thereof in a plaster preparation, wherein said plaster preparation is attached to a carrier and the salicylic acid is present in the plaster preparation in an amount ranging from about 10 to about 80 percent (%) by weight of the plaster preparation; orii) a liquid preparation comprising salicylic acid or a salt, ester or mixture thereof in a film-forming liquid vehicle, and the salicylic acid is present in the liquid preparation in an amount ranging from about 6 to about 35% by weight of the liquid preparation.

Abstract: An improved process for converting gentamicin B to isepamicin comprising forming 3,6'-di-N-formylgentamicin B, acylating the 1-amino group with an N-protected (S)-isoserine compound and removing all the blocking groups under conditions which result in high yields of isepamicin. A novel formylating agent, 2-formylmercaptobenzothiazole, and intermediate compounds are also disclosed.

Abstract: A process for preparing an hydroxyketone of the formula (X): ##STR1## wherein Ar represents substituted phenyl, aromatic heterocyclic, or substituted aromatic heterocyclic; R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently represents hydrogen, C-1 to C-16 alkyl, aromatic, substituted aromatic, aromatic heterocyclic, substituted aromatic heterocyclic or C-1 to C-5 alkyl covalently bonded to Ar, with the provision that R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are different.
