  • Patent number: 5612528
Abstract: A coil (6) forming part of a tuned circuit (8) is wound around a gapped magnetic core (2). As a magnetic stripe (14) is passed under core (2), variations to the amplitude and frequency of the circuit (8) occur dependent upon the magnetic data on the strip (14). Selected data are manipulated to derive several values (32, 36, 38, and 40) for combination via AND-gate (47). Only if the combination value is above a threshold value is an indication given that the stripe (14) is genuine and not an attempted copy.

  • Patent number: 5612818
Abstract: A confocal microscope is adapted to prevent a shading phenomenon of an observation image due to axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification of an objective optical system. A backward light from a specimen illuminated by an excitation light through the objective optical system is condensed through the objective optical system and a deflecting optical system at a position conjugate to the condensing point on the specimen. Formed in a light shielding member aligned with the condensing point position of the backward light is a pinhole having an opening which substantially covers a range of movements of the condensing point of the backward light caused as a result of the movement of the optical path by the deflecting optical system.

  • Patent number: 5610520
Abstract: An MRI/MRS magnetic coil system is disclosed wherein the isolation between the coils can be adjusted to decrease or virtually eliminate the coupling between quadrature magnetic resonance imaging coils in order to optimize orthogonality between the coils. The adjustment allows the use of flexible coils which may be conformed to image specific anatomical regions. The RF characteristics of the coils are controlled by variable capacitors. The capacitors are controlled by a remote automatic controller which functions to adjust the RF characteristics of the coils until an optimal orthogonality and signal to noise ratio is achieved between and by the coils.

  • Patent number: 5610321
Abstract: A failure detection system for an air-to-fuel ratio control system executes an air-to-fuel ratio feedback control based on a first output from a first air-to-fuel ratio sensor before a catalytic converter. The system detects a feedback correction value, corrected according to a second output from a second air-to-fuel ratio sensor after the catalytic converter, which is above a predetermined value so as to determine that the first air-to-fuel ratio sensor has something wrong with it. The system also detects a change in the second output during correction of the feedback correction value so as to determine that the second air-to-fuel ratio sensor has something wrong with it when a change which is less than a predetermined change is detected.

  • Patent number: 5607111
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for crushing material of different grain sizes, particularly an air-swept mill. From the method standpoint there is a regulation of the fluid feed flow in the vicinity of a blade ring and with adjustable reinforcing cladding segments, so that grinding material particle flows are moved in a flow envelope, particularly in a hyperboloid torus. From the apparatus standpoint, stationary and adjustable reinforcing cladding segments are arranged as a function of the grinding rollers rolling on a grinding pan. Using adjusting devices, acting on connecting areas of the reinforcing cladding segments, it is possible to bring about a horizontal or radial adjustment and/or an inclination adjustment of the reinforcing cladding segments for regulating the fluid feed flow from the outside and in continuous manner during a crushing process.

  • Patent number: 5605186
Abstract: The invention provides a method of die-casting of metals, with dispersion of predetermined quantities of solid particles in resulting metal castings. This is achieved by inserting a cartridge into the runner system, which cartridge is normally sealed at both ends with foil and contains the predetermined quantity of the solid particles. When molten metal is injected through the runner system and thus through the cartridge, it entrains the solid particles therewith which are thereby intermixed with the molten metal and form the composite material of which the die-cast part is thus made. The cartridge is preferably formed of the same metal as the one used for the die-casting, so that it may then be recycled.
