  • Patent number: 6030558
Abstract: Porous products of thermoplastic polymers and the like are formed by sintering pellets, especially micropellets and/or pellets made by rapid water quenched pelletizing of the polymers, such as by underwater pelletizing or water ring pelletizing. The pellets are of a uniform size and shape, each having approximately equal dimensions along three mutually perpendicular axes, thereby producing porous products having smooth surfaces, narrow pore size distributions, greater strength and other improved characteristics. The porous products include antiperspirant and deodorant applicator heads, wastewater treatment bubblers and selective filters.

  • Patent number: 6029302
Abstract: The invention concerns a cleanable scraper station which is designed as a dispatch/receive station (1;1*) and through which the product or cleaning agent flows. The aim of the invention is to improve the cleanability of the scraper station compared with prior art devices, as measured by increased throughput, and in particular to ensure through cleaning of the entire scraper surface. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the scraper (9) is positioned with play in all directions when in the through-flow position (II,II*) by means of a controllable second stop (6a;6a*) acting in conjunction with a displaceable first stop (5a,5a*) or by means of the controllable second stop (6a;6a*) acting in conjunction with a coupling cage (50;50*) connected to the displaceable first stop (5a;5a*) and in which the scraper (9) is positively locked, or only by means of the coupling cage (50;50*) connected to the displaceable first stop (5a;5*) and in which the scraper (9) is positively locked.

  • Patent number: 6031608
Abstract: In a spectroscopic instrument having a spherical grating to disperse incident light into a spectrum, the grating is oscillated on axis to scan the light passing through an exit slit through the spectrum or a portion of the spectrum. The axis of rotation of the grating is shifted to be displaced from tangent to the center of the spherical grating so that the light passing through the exit slit is substantially focused throughout the spectrum scanned by the instrument. The grating is mounted in the holder to shift the center of gravity of the grating and the holder to be on the axis on which the grating is pivoted.

  • Patent number: 6029240
Abstract: A digital computer system capable of processing two or more computer instructions in parallel and having a cache storage unit for temporarily storing machine-level computer instructions in their journey from a higher-level storage unit of the computer system to the functional units which process the instructions. The computer system includes an instruction compounding unit located intermediate to the higher-level storage unit and the cache storage unit for analyzing the instructions and generating for to each instruction a compounding information which indicates whether or not that instruction may be processed in parallel with one or more neighboring instructions in the instruction stream. These tagged instructions are then stored in the cache unit with the compounding information. The computer system further includes a plurality of functional instruction processing units which operate in parallel with one another. The instructions supplied to these functional units are obtained from the cache storage unit.

  • Patent number: 6026462
Abstract: A data processing system has a processing unit and a memory which provides a common pool of physical storage. This storage is initially assigned as either main storage or expanded storage during power on. Subsequent to the initial assignment, storage assigned as main storage or expanded storage may be unassigned and thus returned to the common pool. Once returned to the common pool, the storage may be reassigned as either main storage or expanded storage. The storage reassignment is done dynamically without requiring a reset action and transparent to the operating system and any active application programs.

  • Patent number: 6020846
Abstract: In a global monitoring system having four or more satellites which transmit messages to user stations by which the user stations can determine the user position, the satellite messages include the time of transmission of the messages as indicated by satellite clocks and includes a correction message. The correction message consists of time correction values for the satellite clocks. The satellite time correction values are determined from a clocks only model wherein three or more monitoring stations having known positions on the ground receive the satellite messages and determine pseudoranges between the satellites and the monitoring stations. The satellite time correction values are determined statistically by nonlinear least squares from a clocks only model relating the ranges between the satellites and the monitoring stations to the measured pseudoranges, the satellite time correction values and monitoring stations time correction values.

  • Patent number: 6021508
Abstract: A computer system having a shared disk file system running on multiple computers each having their own instance of an operating system and being coupled for parallel data sharing access to files residing on network attached shared disks. Locking techniques reduce the overhead of a token manager which is also used in the file system recovery if a computer participating in the management of shared disks becomes unavailable or failed. Synchronous and asynchronous takeover of a metadata node occurs for correction of metadata which was under modification and a new computer node to be a metadata node for that file. Locks are not constantly required to allocate new blocks on behalf of a user.

  • Patent number: 5999976
Abstract: A computer system having a shared disk file system running on multiple computers each having their own instance of an operating system and being coupled for parallel data sharing access to files residing on network attached shared disks. Access to a file by a processor node is controlled by tokens transferred to the node from a token manager. To prevent another processor node from removing a token after the token has been received, but before it performs the operation on the file, each process can lock the token after it has been received. A node with a token can lock a byte range of a file, which byte range may include all or only some of byte range cornered by the token.

  • Patent number: 5993250
Abstract: A set of battery jumper cables includes a pair of single pole, single throw switches, or equivalent semiconductor implement switches. The switches are connected in series between the battery connection terminals of each cable in the set to prevent arcing. Control wires and a delay circuit connect the two terminals at one end of the set to the operating coil of one of the single pole switches. Similarly, another set of control wires and a delay circuit connect the terminals at the other end of the set to the operating coil of the other switch. In operation, these two switches in their unenergized state are open and automatically current flow through the cable set until after all four cable terminals are connected respectively to battery terminals and the relay delay has timed out, thus preventing arcing as the terminals are connected and disconnected or if the terminals at one end are shorted to each other.

  • Patent number: 5988959
Abstract: A spindle supporting box structure, wherein longitudinal parts forming both ends of lateral parts at each of right and left longitudinal side faces facing, with a spindle therebetween, in a direction almost perpendicular to longitudinal side faces facing in a front-back direction are formed by longitudinal tubular members having suitable flexural rigidity. A damping structure wherein required frameworks of structures are formed by tubular members and wherein concrete is filled in the tubular members and then solidified. As an alternative, a powdery damping material or a jelly damping material is airtightly sealed in the tubular members. An inner space of one or more of the tubular members is made into a gas pressurized tank wherein a balance cylinder is connected to the gas pressurized tank and wherein the gas in the gas pressurized tank directly acts on a cylinder chamber of the balance cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5991172
Abstract: A new single stage, single switch input current shaping circuit features substantially reduced turn-on switching losses of the switch in the flyback-converter. In this technique, the turn-on switching losses due to the discharge of the output capacitance of the switch are reduced by turning on the switch when its voltage is minimal or close to the minimal. To achieve the turn-on loss reduction for a wide range of line and load conditions, the flyback-converter stage is continuously operated at the boundary of the CCM and DCM by employing a variable-frequency control. In this technique the boost inductor can work either in the DCM or the CCM. The wide-bandwidth, variable-frequency control is implemented by detecting the onset of the DCM/CCM boundary and, subsequently, turning the switch on at the minimum switch voltage. The switch is turned off when the increasing primary current reaches a reference level set by the output-voltage feedback control circuit.
