Abstract: In a high power hot cathode electron beam gun with a cathode and cathode heater which are caused to float at high potential, a high voltage cable termination is provided with built-in transformer. The transformer is characterized as having an input impedance matched to the cable and output impedance matched to the cathode heater. Using this configuration, the cathode power supplies and cathode/heater control assembly can be located in remote locations.
Abstract: A fixture for measuring runout in firearm cartridges, casings and bullets is provided. The fixture holds the cartridge at the tip and forward of the rim for rotation. A self centering tip bearing holds the tip of the cartridge, casing or bullet for rotation about an axis of rotation. The exterior surface of the cartridge, casing or bullet is supported in a V-shaped knife edge bearing. The distance from the knife edge bearing to the tip bearing is adjustable to accommodate various cartridge sizes. Interchangeable tip bearing tools are provided for rotatably holding bullets and casings, and for locating areas of variation in the thickness of the casing wall. The thickness indicating tool has a flat surface offset from the cartridge axis, which rests against the curved interior surface of a casing, forming a chord which supports the interior surface at two points. The gauge arm, placed on the outside of the casing between the two points, can then measure the relative thickness of the casing wall.
Abstract: A process for welding stainless steel tubing in the presence of an inert gas comprising a silicon base gas, in particular silane SiH.sub.4. During the welding operation, a suitable quantity of silicon is deposited by chemical vapor deposition at the weld joint to significantly improve the corrosion resistance of the weld.

Abstract: A fluffy pulp previously dried, having a consistency by 90%, is introduced in a baler where it is subjected to a carbon dioxide comprising atmosphere in order to both reduce or eliminate the fire risk in the baler and to decrease the pH of the pulp by chemically reacting with it. Both gaseous and liquid (snow) carbon dioxide can be used. Preferably, carbon dioxide snow is injected at the bottom of the baler to accelerate the pH control of the pulp, just before compressing the pulp in bales, which compression enhances the pH control reaction between the pulp and the carbon dioxide.

Abstract: A method of disposing of photographic fixer and developer. The fixer and developer, preferably in equal quantities, are mixed and the mixture combined with an absorbing polymer which is substantially insoluble in the mixture of photographic fixer and developer. The polymer is capable of absorbing at least approximately 20 times its weight of the electrolytic aqueous base solution of fixer and developer. Once immobilized, the silver precipitates as insoluble silver sulfide and the mixture can be disposed of in a landfill or similar site designed to receive nontoxic waste.
Abstract: A maleimide random copolymer contains an N-substituted compound structural unit, an unsaturated peroxycarbonate structural unit and optionally a vinyl monomer structural unit. In place of the unsaturated peroxycarbonate structural unit, an unsaturated peroxyester unit may be contained. A process for preparing a maleimide graft copolymer comprises polymerizing a mixture of an N-substituted maleimide compound and a vinyl monomer in the presence of a random vinyl copolymer containing peroxy groups with active oxygen content.
Abstract: A composite fabric and its method of disposal after use. Garments, linens, drapes, towels and other useful articles are provided as the composite of a reusable first component and a woven, non-woven, knitted or otherwise formed fabric of thermoplastic polyvinyl alcohol polymer as a second component. The second component is water soluble in temperatures above approximately 140.degree. F. After use, the composite is subjected to water of sufficient temperature to substantially dissolve the thermoplastic polyvinyl alcohol component but not the reusable first component.
Abstract: A method of producing an absorbent composition. A polymeric material characterized as having surface anionic reactive sites is mixed with a source of multivalent metal ions to render the polymeric material sorbent of aqueous liquids. A dispersant is then added to form a wet slurry which is subsequently dried to a granular consistency.
Abstract: A dental handpiece apparatus having a heating unit contains a liquid supply source, liquid flow passages for ejecting a liquid from the liquid supply source at an ejection passage provided at a distal end of a main body of a handpiece, a gas supply source, gas flow passages for ejecting a gas from the gas supply source at the ejection passage and a heating unit provided in at least one the liquid flow passages and the gas flow passages for heating at least one of the liquid and the gas.
Abstract: An end wall 9, for attachment to a container, has a central panel 10 and surrounded by a channel portion 11 which includes a deposit of solder 19 in the form of a paste of solder and flux. The can end 9 is joined by a double seam 23 to a sidewall 12 of a container body. Heating of the double seam melts the solder to create a soldered joint between the end wall and sidewall. The invention is to be used in the manufacture of containers requiring strong double seams and may be used to make containers for carriage of dangerous goods. Apparatus for applying solder pastes to can ends is described in which paste is urged from a pot against convex surface 37 before passing through oulet nozzles 38 onto a can end.
Abstract: A penis erection assisting device contains a sealing member for sealingly accommodating a penis therein, the sealing member having an opening at one end thereof to insert the penis, an extracting hose connected to the sealing member and a pump for extracting air within the sealing member, an expandable circular bag member provided at the opening of the sealing member, and an exhaling hose for supplying air extracted by the pump into the circular bag member to expand the circular bag member.
Abstract: A substantially transparent wear resistant member wherein a dielectric layer is coated on a support such as glass. Wear resistance is enhanced by reducing fine-scale surface roughness of the dielectric layer.
Abstract: An apatite whisker has a mean aspect ratio (length along c-axis/length along a-axis) of not less than 10.0 and contains a carbonic acid group of not less than 0.01 wt. % based on total weight of the whisker. A method for preparing an apatite whisker involves precipitating and growing an apatite from a liquid containing phosphoric acid and calcium to have a mean aspect ratio (length along c-axis/length along a-axis) of not less than 10.0.
Abstract: A system for analyzing particles from compressed gas. The system employs a back-filling technique to slowly balance the pressures on both sides of a control valve before operation. Use of a critical orifice as a flow control device for compressed gases of varying pressure is employed to provide a constant volumetric flow rate and thus a constant residence time within an impurity sensor.
Abstract: A method of disposing of garments after use. The garments, linens, drapes, towels and other useful articles are provided as woven, non-woven, knitted or otherwise formed fabric of thermoplastic polyvinyl alcohol polymer fiber, the fiber being water soluble only at temperatures above approximately 37.degree. C. and preferably above 50.degree. C. After use, the fabric is subjected to water at a sufficient temperature to substantially dissolve the fabric whereupon the water and dissolved fabric are subjected to disposal.
Abstract: A sign system for conveying merchandise identifying and pricing information. A frame is provided having viewing regions for supporting and displaying information. Contained within at least one of the viewing regions are alphameric or numeric symbols which are contained on longitudinally extending strips of polymeric material which are characterized as comprising score portion of two or more substantially parallel extending cuts which pass through a substantial but not total thickness of the strip. Alphameric or numeric symbols which are not to be viewed are hidden behind those which are to be viewed by folding the vertically extending strip along the score portion.
