  • Patent number: 4478393
Abstract: The invention is directed to an apparatus for thermally cutting rectangular metal slabs along a longitudinal axis of the slab. A metal slab is conveyed along a predetermined path of travel while it is being cut by, for example, an oxygen-flame cutting machine. The means for conveying the metal slab comprises a plurality of rollers transversely disposed relative to the path of travel and the cutting machine is arranged above the conveying means and between two of the rollers. The slag created by the cutting is collected and conveyed by a slag duct disposed below the conveying means. Pursuant to the invention, the slag duct extends from between the two rollers adjacent the cutting machine along an axis transverse to the path of travel. In accordance with another feature of the invention, the side edges of the metal slab are sensed and the cutting machine is transversely aligned relative to the path of travel in accordance with the sensed locations of the side edges.

  • Patent number: 4476915
Abstract: A method for continuous casting of metallic strands which provides a maximum compressive stress to the strand at the precise bending point of the strand guide. In this manner, continuous casting speeds of greater than 0.8 m/min. can be utilized without the otherwise present potential for ruptures and tears. Pairs of supporting rollers are spaced along the strand guide. A bending point is defined as the precise point where the arcuate section of the strand guide becomes the linear section of the strand guide. It is at that bending point that the compressive forces on the cast metallic strand are maximized by the selected driving of the supporting rollers, located downstream of the bending point. The number of supporting rollers located upstream of the bending point is not less than twice the number of supporting rollers located downstream of the bending point.

  • Patent number: 4473210
Abstract: A fluid flow restrictor for use in a high pressure valve or the like which comprises a series of closely interfitting concentric cylinders alternately attached to the valve seat and an axially movable valve plug of the valve. In one advantageous embodiment of the invention, various arrangements of slot openings are formed through the several cylinders. The slot openings may be of any geometric shape, for example, rectangular or trapezoidal, and are of sufficient volume to act as expansion chambers for a compressible fluid. The openings of each cylinder communicate with the openings of an adjacent cylinder by various overlapping relationships between openings or by viscous friction flow paths between the cylinders to form restricting flow paths therebetween. Axial displacement of the valve plug will move the interfitting cylinders with respect to one another to vary the flow path dimensions between the slot openings of the cylinders.

  • Patent number: 4471512
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a resilient friction clip adapted to be received over and to frictionally grip the wire portion of a merchandise display hook, such as used pegboard displays. The clip is formed of resilient material, of extruded, or more preferably molded construction. A center aperture is provided for gripping the wire, and a radial slit extends from the periphery of the clip into the center aperture, enabling the clip to be forcibly applied over the wire. A pair of angularly disposed manipulating tabs are formed integrally on the clip, opposite to and symmetrical with the radial slit. The manipulating tabs may be gripped by the fingers and squeezed together, to open the radial slit and greatly facilitate application of the clip onto the wire. Squeezing of the manipulating tab also tends to release the friction grip of the clip on the wire for easy adjustment of its position.
