  • Patent number: 4518677
Abstract: It has been found that excellent quality photopolymer printing plates having resistance to alcohol-based inks can be prepared by (a) spreading a photopolymer composition comprising a chain extended, liquid, terminally olefinically unsaturated polymer; from about 1% to about 50% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer; from about 0.1% to about 10% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of photoinitiator; and from about 0.01% to about 2% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of a stabilizer on a support to form a photopolymer element, (b) exposing to actinic light selected areas of said photopolymer composition on said support until substantial cross-linking takes place in the exposed areas without significant cross-linking in the unexposed areas, and (c) removing the unexposed areas of photopolymer composition by washing the plate with an aqueous detergent solution.

  • Patent number: 4482681
Abstract: Halogen-containing polymers can be crosslinked by heat-curing with a crosslinking system made up of a crosslinking agent which is either a polymercaptan or an ester derivative thereof, a basic material and a hydrated salt. When the hydrated salt is chosen so that it releases its water of hydration during heat-curing the rate of crosslinking is enhanced.

  • Patent number: 4475810
Abstract: An improved apparatus for the preparation of photopolymerized relief image plates is disclosed in which a series of indicators are used to indicate that the liquid photopolymerizable material is prepared for exposure to actinic radiation. Such detection may be accomplished by the closure of electrically energized indicator circuits used to detect when a top cover is in position over a layer of liquid photopolymerizable material. In addition, the actinic radiation may be activated directly by the closure of such circuits. Also disclosed is a method by which the time required for the top cover to come to rest in position over the photopolymerizable layer can be measured, and this measurement may then be used as a control to determine if a sufficient amount of photopolymerizable material to make an acceptable relief image plate was deposited on the platemaking surface.

  • Patent number: 4450226
Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed which will rapidly provide a uniform layer of photopolymerizable material for a printing plate. A regulated flow of liquid photopolymerizable resin is supplied from an external reservoir into a manifold which is approximately C-shaped in cross-section and has one at least partially open side face. A gate is disposed before the open side face of the manifold and this gate is vertically adjustable so that together the gate and open side face define an orifice slot or passageway from which a uniform curtain of the resin may flow onto a platemaking surface. The manifold member has a downward projecting wedge shaped lip which acts as a doctor blade on the liquid resin layer deposited as the manifold is moved across the plate-making surface.

  • Patent number: 4447495
Abstract: In an improved adhesive process the amount of azidosilane coupling agent necessary to adhere a siliceous material to a polymer is reduced. The siliceous material, the azidosilane coupling agent and the polymer are admixed with an organosilicon compound and then heated at a temperature and for a time sufficient to decompose the azide groups of the azidosilane coupling agent. The reduction in the amount of azidosilane coupling agent is accomplished without adversely affecting the adhesion of the polymer to the siliceous material. Also disclosed are the products thus produced.
