  • Patent number: 8162035
Abstract: A cold plate and method for cooling using the cold plate are disclosed. The cold plate includes a housing having hyperporous, microchannel ceramic foam strips disposed therewithin. A plurality of plugs formed from a high thermal conductivity material are disposed into the ceramic foam strips. Heat is transferred in an extremely efficient manner by leveraging the high thermal conductivity of the plugs to transfer the energy deep into a high internal surface area ceramic foam, which in turn transfers the heat to a coolant via convection. Channels between the foam strips form coolant inlet and outlet plenums, which results in minimal coolant pressure drop through the cold plate. In one example, an exemplary cold plate may provide cooling to one or two printed circuit boards. In another example, a cold plate may be disposed within a heat exchanger housing to provide cooling to a fluid.

  • Patent number: 8146733
Abstract: A contact seal to prevent contamination from fouling a conveyor idler roll, the roll generally comprising a rotatable cylinder, at least one internal bearing assembly, and a fixed axle. A disc of thermoplastic polymer or similarly resilient material is adhesively attached preferentially to an outboard end cap of the idler roll to seal out contamination. A circular aperture through the disc allows the attached seal to rotate about the idler axle. At least one ring of felt or other porous material is adhesively attached to the disc circumferentially to the aperture to filter out contamination when the ring is in frictional contact with the roll end cap. The seal is preferentially divided along the longitudinal axis of the disc to form two interlocking semicircular half-pieces that are snapped together circumferentially about the idler axle so that no disassembly or modification of the idler is required to adhesively attach the seal.

  • Patent number: 8132430
Abstract: A glass fiber and a method of manufacturing a glass fiber for reinforcing a transparent composite matrix are disclosed. The glass fiber includes a first glass material having a first set of mechanical properties including a first modulus and a first coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and a second glass material having a second set of mechanical properties including a second modulus and a second CTE. The second glass material forms a substantially uniform coating on the first glass material. The second CTE is less than the first CTE. The glass fiber is formed by reducing the cross-section of a glass fiber preform of the first glass material coated with the second glass material by hot working. Because of the selected difference in the CTE's, the first glass material imparts a compressive force upon the second glass material, which improves the strength of the glass fiber.

  • Patent number: 8114799
Abstract: A ceramic matrix composite with a ceramic matrix and a gradient layering of coating on ceramic fibers. The coating typically improves the performance of the composite in one direction while degrading it in another direction. For a SiC-SiC ceramic matrix composite, a BN coating is layered in a gradient fashion or in a step-wise fashion in different regions of the article comprising the ceramic. The BN coating thickness is applied over the ceramic fibers to produce varying desired physical properties by varying the coating thickness within differing regions of the composite, thereby tailoring the strength of the composite in the different regions. The coating may be applied as a single layer as a multi-layer coating to enhance the performance of the coating as the ceramic matrix is formed or infiltrated from precursor materials into a preform of the ceramic fibers.
