  • Patent number: 5448594
Abstract: A one-bit differential detector for a GMSK signal operates independently of an offset frequency. In particular, a decision signal used by a decision circuit to distinguish between logic "0" and logic "1" is always equal to sin[.DELTA..phi.(T)]. The inventive detector has an improved bit error rate performance in comparison to the prior art.

  • Patent number: 5446735
Abstract: In a local area network segment, the bandwidth in the channel between a network interface device, e.g., a port, switching hub, router, bridge or server, and one or more associated station is shared as follows. At the network interface device, a variable is maintained which stores information relating to the success or failure of transmission of packets in the channel. If the channel is sensed idle, the network interface device transmits the packet with probability 1. If the channel is sensed busy, the network interface device senses the channel for an end-of-carrier signal and, thereafter, waits a period of time equal to the interframe gap g. In addition, after an additional delay period .zeta., the network interface device reattempts to transmit the packet in the channel. If the variable maintained by the network interface device is less than a certain limit, the delay .zeta. is selected according to a first basic bandwidth allocation protocol.

  • Patent number: 5445212
Abstract: The invention relates to a casting wheel of a strip casting machine. The casting wheel comprises a casting ring (30) mounted and borne internally on freely rotatable rollers (31a, b, 33a, b). In the zone of the position at the start of casting, the rollers (31a, b) are rigidly mounted via a supporting element (32), while on the opposite side they are radially adjustable via a-supporting element (34a, b). In this way deformations of the casting ring (30) due to heating during casting can be absorbed without a change in the position of the casting ring (30) as at the start of casting. The casting ring (30) is driven from outside via at least one driving element (30b) which is connected via a transmission member (30a) to the casting ring (30).

  • Patent number: 5444004
Abstract: A self aligned lateral BJT is disclosed which has a lightly doped first region of a first conductivity type, e.g., P-type. A heavily doped polysilicon region, of a second conductivity type, e.g., N-type, is provided on a portion of a surface of the first region. A heavily doped second region of the second conductivity type, is disposed in the first region below the polysilicon region. An oxide region is provided on a portion of the first region surface adjacent to the polysilicon region. A third region of the first conductivity type is disposed in the first region adjacent to the second region and below the oxide region. A heavily doped fourth region of the second conductivity type is disposed in the first region adjacent to the third region. The fabrication of the lateral BJT includes the step of forming a polysilicon region on a portion of the first region. Then, the second region is formed by diffusing an impurity from the polysilicon region into the first region.

  • Patent number: 5440713
Abstract: The present invention is memory access system suitable for use in a computer system having M memory banks and N masters. The memory access system comprises a separate paged interleaved controller associated with each of the M memory banks. Each of the paged interleaved controllers comprises a bank arbiter and a bank controller. The bank arbiter associated with each memory bank receives requests from the N masters and subjects them to a request-halt protocol. The request-halt protocol executed by each arbiter prioritizes among a plurality of current requests by said masters for the same memory bank. Each arbiter insures that a current request generated by a master will not be granted if the master has a previous request that has not been granted by another arbiter. This insures that the requests of each master are granted in the order in which the requests are made.

  • Patent number: 5424747
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process and a system for determining the position and orientation of a mobile, and to applications thereof. In order to ascertain both the position and orientation of a mobile, the invention proposes an interrogation/response process whose particular feature is to supply, to a given interrogation, two responses which are distinguished on the one hand, by different modulating frequencies and, on the other hand, by the fact that they are transmitted according to two patterns which differ in aim relative to one another. It is then possible, simply by measuring the angular deviation of either one of the two responses, and simply by measuring the ratio of the amplitudes of the two responses received, to deduce on the one hand the angular position .phi. and on the other hand the orientation .theta. of the mobile. The applications in the automobile sector are numerous (anticollision, control of road traffic and of compliance with the highway code, automatic toll points, etc.).

The coil (3) consists at least of a flat helicoidal conductor arrangement and is part of the LC oscillator. The oscillator circuit, together with a measuring circuit, constitutes a detector circuit (4) for the recognition of a change in oscillator frequency caused by the presence of the coin (2). The coil (3) and the detector circuit (4) are located on a common support in immediate proximity of each other and can be enclosed in a flat housing. The coin detector can be connected by means of a three-strand line comprising a feeder (7) and a signalling line (9).
