  • Patent number: 6897711
Abstract: A voltage regulated transistor driver receives an electrical communication of a source voltage from a voltage source, and in response thereto, electrically communicates a regulated driver voltage to one or more transistors for the purpose of driving the transistor(s). In a voltage multiplier mode of the transistor driver, the regulated driver voltage is greater than the source voltage. In a voltage follower mode of the transistor driver, the regulated driver voltage approaches the source voltage to thereby equal or approximate the source voltage.

  • Patent number: 6892605
Abstract: A hand wheel actuator having a stationary hub is provided by a housing supporting a first shaft via bearings such that it is rotatable about its own axis. The first shaft has an upper end configured for attaching a hand wheel. The actuator also includes a position sensor for detecting an angular displacement of the first shaft from a selected origin and producing a signal indicative of the angular displacement and an electric motor in operative communication with the first shaft for providing feedback to a driver. A steering post is maintained in a fixed position with respect to the housing for maintaining the hub in a fixed position centrally of the hand wheel, so that the hub faces the driver when the hand wheel is operated. The steering post extends along an axis of rotation of the hand wheel and through the first shaft, which is fixed to the hand wheel and rotates therewith.

  • Patent number: 6893733
Abstract: Modified contoured crushable structural members and methods for making the same are described. The contoured structural members comprise composite or metal materials sandwiching a support or stabilizing structure. The structural members are made crushable by incorporating an initiator into the structural members. The structural member crushes at the location of the initiator by absorbing the energy of an exerting load. The modified structure is provided by attaching additional structural components or elements to the end or outside of the structural member or by modifying the shape of the structural member. With a modified, contoured, crushable, and generally non-flat structure, applications and uses for the structural members of the present invention are nearly limitless.

  • Patent number: 6892864
Abstract: A temperature compensation method for controlling a damping force of a magnetorheological (MR) damper is disclosed. First, a base operating current as a function of a desired force level of a damping force of the MR damper is determined, and a temperature compensation as a function of an operating temperature of the MR damper is determined. Finally, the temperature compensation is applied to the base operating current to generate a compensated operating current as a function of the desired force level of the damping force and the operating temperature of the MR damper. To refine the compensated operating current, the temperature compensation can be determined as both a function of the operating temperature of the MR damper and a relative velocity of the MR damper.

  • Patent number: 6890157
Abstract: A flow rate of unconnected first and second fluid flows is matched or not matched, such as, but not limited to, matching or not matching the flow rate of the replacement water stream with the waste water stream in kidney dialysis. First and second flow paths are interconnected so substantially the same flow from a first positive displacement pump in the first path encounters a flow-rate transducer in the second path. A first set of transducer readings are taken for various values of the controllable first pump speed of the first pump. The first and second flow paths are disconnected, and a second set of transducer readings are taken for various values of the controllable second pump speed of the second pump. The flow rates are substantially matched or not matching by controlling one of the first and second pump speeds using the other of the pump speeds and the first and second sets of readings.

  • Patent number: 6883649
Abstract: A closing system for use with a magneto-rheological (MR) damper. The closing system provides lubrication for a piston rod without a need for periodic replenishment. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a lubrication chamber of the closing system utilizes a carrier fluid portion of MR fluid present in a fluid reservoir of the damper as lubricant for a piston rod guide and the piston rod. A seal retainer comprised of a porous material acts as a selective barrier to the micro-particles in the MR fluid in the fluid reservoir, allowing the MR carrier fluid portion to pass through the porous seal retainer to the lubrication chamber while restraining the micro-particles in the fluid reservoir. The seal retainer thus acts as a filter to segregate the abrasive particles of the MR fluid and allows the MR carrier fluid portion of the MR fluid to continuously replenish the lubrication chamber and lubrication passage to lubricate the piston rod guide and piston rod.
