  • Patent number: 4809240
Abstract: Method for displaying and interpreting seismic data. Recorded seismic data is used to produce a stereo pair of perspective plots of seismic section for selected areas of the seismic data. The pair of perspective plots are used to produce a stereoscopic view of the seismic section. Examination of the stereoscopic view of the seismic section permits the identification of geological characteristics indicative of possible hydrocarbon deposits, including positive geophysical characteristics which would not be identifiable by examination of a single perspective plot of a seismic section alone.

  • Patent number: 4808764
Abstract: A process for introducing a exothermic reactant vapor stream to an adiabatic catalyst zone comprising the steps of: preheating a volatile liquid exothermic reactant stream below its autogenous temperature under process pressure; contacting the preheated liquid reactant stream in a saturator unit with a hot diluent gas to vaporize the reactant stream in gaseous mixture with the diluent stream; directing the gaseous mixture from the saturator unit to the catalyst zone for exothermic conversion of the reactant under substantially adiabatic reaction conditions in the presence of diluent gas; recovering reaction products and diluent gas from the catalyst zone; separating diluent gas from the products, compressing and recycling the diluent gas to the saturator unit.

  • Patent number: 4804801
Abstract: A catalytic process is provided for converting feedstock containing C.sub.2 to C.sub.8 aliphatic hydrocarbons to aromatics by contacting said feedstocks, under conversion conditions, with a balanced acid/hydrogenation dual function catalyst comprising as the acid component a crystalline zeolite catalyst having a Constraint Index of about 1 to 12 and an alpha value no higher than about 100, and as the hydrogenation component a minor amount of an added metal constituent comprising at least 50 weight percent of a component consisting of zinc and a metal from Group IB of the Periodic Table, e.g. copper, thereby converting the feedstock to aromatics.

  • Patent number: 4803186
Abstract: The catalytic properties of a metal-containing shape selective crystalline silicate zeolite are significantly improved by converting said metal to an intermetallic compound. Thus, for example, zeolite beta containing the intermetallic component platinum zeolite demonstrates improved catalytic properties for dewaxing a hydrocarbon feedstock compared to zeolite beta containing platinum metal alone.

  • Patent number: 4801572
Abstract: A modified supported catalyst for polymerizing alpha-olefins, for example, ethylene, is prepared by combining a chromium compound-containing catalyst with a modifier which is an oxide of an element of Group II A of the Periodic Chart of the Elements. The resulting modified catalyst composition, when used to polymerize alpha-olefins, produces polymer resins having higher values of High Load Melt Index (I.sub.21) than catalyst compositions without the modifier. There is also disclosed a process for polymerizing alpha-olefins, at relatively lower temperatures than was heretofore possible, to obtain resins of relatively high HLMI, using the above-identified modified catalyst composition. The resulting polymers can be used for the fabrication of blow-molded products, e.g., household and industrial containers.

  • Patent number: 4799382
Abstract: Measurements of reservoir characteristics of a core sample of a subsurface formation are carried out with the core sample being subjected to pressure cycling. Pore volume changes during such pressure cycling are measured. Pore compressibility is determined from a plot of the measured pore volume change versus pressure. Scanning of the core sample with X-rays each pressure cycle identifies the pressure at which fracturing is initiated.

  • Patent number: 4798405
Abstract: Tube ends are received at opposite ends of a bore passage in a block of an electrically non-conductive material. Ferrules encircling the tube ends are compressed to effect a fluid tight seal of the tube ends and block and effective at pressures of about 650 psi. Plates are mounted to the block ends for applying compression force to the ferrule and the plate mounting involves low reactive force in the block.

  • Patent number: 4795599
Abstract: A screw extruder and a method of operation thereof. The screw extruder comprises a barrel including a section that is supported for rotation about the longitudinal axis of the barrel. A screw extends and is supported for rotation in the barrel; and, in use, rotation of the screw rotates and advances plastic material through the barrel. Rotation of the screw also causes the rotatable barrel section to rotate, and a brake is connected to that rotatable section to maintain the rotational speed of the rotatable section less than the rotational speed of the extruder screw. The rotational speed of the screw relative to the rotatable barrel section controls the relative rates at which plastic is mixed, heated, and pressurized in the barrel.

  • Patent number: 4793416
Abstract: A process for recovering hydrocarbonaceous fluids from a formation having a substantially low pH where a rehealable gel prepared ex-situ is used to close off a zone of greater permeability. Said gel is obtained by mixing into an aqueous medium sufficient biopolymer amounts of a Xanthan or Alcaligene polysaccharide. This mixture is maintained at a pH of about 5.5 while an aminoplast resin in excess of 4,000 ppm is added thereto which causes said gel to form in about 0.5 to 6 hours. The resultant gel is suitable for use in a carbon-dioxide flood process. Said gels are very stable at a pH of less than about 5.5.

  • Patent number: 4793915
Abstract: A process and apparatus for fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) of a hydrocarbon feed. The process and apparatus includes a riser which upwardly discharges into a deflector baffle located within a stripping vessel. The stripping vessel is located within a disengaging vessel. The deflector baffle is spaced from the riser and the stripping vessel. Preferably, the deflector baffle is shaped similarly to a large bubble cap. Catalyst passes downwardly from the baffle into a stripping zone within a lower portion of the stripping vessel. Hydrocarbons stripped from the catalyst pass upwardly aaway from the stripping zone, then pass to a cyclone located outside the stripping vessel and then discharge from the disengaging vessel.

  • Patent number: 4793415
Abstract: A steam flooding method for recovering oil from an underground formation penetrated by an injection and at least one production well is modified by initially lowering the permeability of the lower vertical portion of the formation, e.g., by plugging thereof with gravel sand pack, capped by a plaster of paris or cement, thereafter continuing to inject the steam into the injection well and maintaining high level of production from the production well until thermal breakthrough is achieved in the production well. Subsequently, the initial permeability of the lower vertical portion of the formation is restored, e.g., by removing the gravel sand pack, and oil is recovered from the production well. In a preferred embodiment, the permeability of substantially the entire initial completed interval of the production well is decreased in the aforementioned manner, the well is recompleted higher in the formation and steam is continuously injected into the injection well.
