  • Patent number: 4617721
Abstract: An apparatus is provided which enables the jaws of a chuck 10 to be removed from and inserted into jaw-ways 12, 13, 14 using a conventional workpiece handler, rather than a sophisticated and highly accurate dedicated jaw handling mechanism. A conventional workpiece handler cannot position a jaw to close tolerances but this problem is overcome by using a guide shoe 17 which can receive a jaw from the workpiece handler in any one of a range of positions and then accurately guide the jaw into one of the jaw-ways 12, 13, or 14.A mechanism 16 is provided for releasing the jaws from the jaw-ways, and for re-locking the jaws in position.

  • Patent number: 4617199
Abstract: The present invention relates to the manufacturing of adhesive tapes having a backing consisting of a polypropylene or other olefinic polymer or copolymer film, one side of which is coated by elastomeric or plastomeric adhesive systems (as applied from solutions, emulsions, in a molted condition, etc., according to the technologies known in the art), the other side being coated with or without corona or flame treatment, with antiadhesive systems which facilitate the unwinding operation of the tape either in the processing and in the application, but at the same time may receive printing inks of the flexo-roto-silk-screen type inks suitable for the printing of polyolefinic films. The application of antiadhesive systems which are ink compatible can be carried out either on line, namely during the tape coating process, and on tapes already coated by means of the duly modified printing machine.

  • Patent number: 4616838
Abstract: A work holding device comprises an annular cylinder 14, an annular piston 15 movable with respect to the cylinder within the cylinder in an axial direction by application of fluid pressure, and a jaw drive device 28, 29, 30, 31 projecting from the cylinder 14 for applying radial movement to a work holding jaw 12, 13. The piston and/or the cylinder co-operates with the jaw drive device within the cylinder such that axial movement of the piston with respect to the cylinder causes radial movement of the jaw drive device. Since the translation of axial to radial movement takes place effectively within the cylinder, it is possible to reduce the axial length of the work holding device as compared to known work holding devices in which translational movement occurs outside the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4615622
Abstract: A perspective receptacle charged with liquid and having its mouth portion sealed with an opaque seal member is rotated as-erected at a high speed. Due to this high speed rotation, the air resident in the vicinity of the mouth portion of the receptacle forms an air cavity and descends below the seal member. This descending air cavity is detected from the outside of the receptacle by means of an optical detecting member.

  • Patent number: 4613201
Abstract: Light projection apparatus including a laser device and a light separation device for producing red, green and blue light beam components. Ultrasonic diffraction acousto-optical devices are provided for modulating the red, green and blue light beam components respectively, and a scanning device is provided for receiving modulated light from the acousto-optical devices and projecting the light onto a viewing surface. The red, green and blue light beam components are arranged relative to their respective acousto-optical devices so that they intercept the acoustic wave corresponding to any given signal moving through the respective crystals at different times to achieve time differences in modulation of the three components for the given signal. The scanning device is arranged to scan in two dimensions to form a raster.

  • Patent number: 4608775
Abstract: Sensitivity (lack of resistance) to fungicides is a problem in commercial strains of the mushroom Agaricus bisporus. Mutant strains, produced from the known parent strains by UV irradiation followed by selection, and having a genetically stable phenotype of insensitivity (resistance) to carboxin or benodanil have now been prepared. These mutant strains give a good yield of fruit in the presence of the fungicide. They have been deposited as patent deposits under the Budapest Treaty at the Commonwealth Mycological Institute.

  • Patent number: 4607844
Abstract: A poker or slot machine in which security is provided against tampering by monitoring the status of the reels of the machine and storing the status in a non-volatile memory. In the event of a power failure, the control unit of the machine tests the status of the reels upon power up and if the position of the reels is different to that indicated by the status held in the non-volatile memory, an alarm is initiated. If the status stored in the non-volatile memory indicates that a reel was spinning when just prior to the power failure, that reel will be respun upon power up. The control unit also monitors opening of the door providing access to the reel mechanism and causes the reels to respin whenever this door is closed.

  • Patent number: 4605341
Abstract: Attachment means are provided for attaching a mine roof support to an abutment, (e.g. a flexible conveyor) the attachment means comprising a ram arrangement in the form of at least two rams 25, 26 operable to effect relative movement between the mine roof support and the abutment. The provision of two or more rams instead of the conventional single ram means that smaller bore rams may be used, for example a 60 mm bore as opposed to 41/4 inch bore and this makes it possible to cover or encase the rams in a protective shield without reducing the vertical space available to a miner underneath the mine roof support.
