  • Patent number: 4694144
Abstract: A double-glazed window frame comprising two parallel glass panes has an internal blind disposed between the glass panes in parallel therewith. The internal blind comprises a succession of collapsible elongated tubular volumes formed from a plurality of plastic strips; each plastic strip having a center section, an upper face, a lower face, an edge adjacent one of said glass panes and another edge adjacent the other of said glass panes; with the plastic strips alternately bonded to one another through the center section and through the two edges. Each plastic strip has a metallic layer deposited on each face thereof, and each metallic layer has a break in continuity between the edge adjacent one of the glass panes and the edge adjacent the other of the glass panes, whereby the coefficient of thermal insulation of the blind is improved.

  • Patent number: 4692067
Abstract: A coal cutting machine 13, a conveyor 12 and a plurality of mine roof supports 10 extend along the face 11 of a coal mine. The operation of the hydraulic jacks of the roof supports are controlled by pilot valves which are electrically powered and rotationally driven. For example, motorized or cam operated pilot valves can be used. Such pilot valves use much less energy than valves controlled conventionally by solenoids, and the electricity supply can thus be at an intrinsically safe level. The operation of the pilot valves include unitary operation of a given support, remote operation of one support from another and sequential operation of a series of supports.

  • Patent number: 4689992
Abstract: The sensor has two sheets (18, 20) of polarized polymeric piezoelectric material secured together with their main uniaxial mode aligned with axis (16). These are connected to an electric oscillator to induce mechanical oscillation of the assembly (10). A third sheet (22) of like material is secured to the sheets (18, 20) but has its main uniaxial mode transverse to the axis (16). Twisting of the assembly due to rotation causes substantial alteration of the voltage induced in the third sheet (22), the voltage being proportional to the rate of rotation.

  • Patent number: 4689614
Abstract: A cathode ray tube provided on the exterior of its screen with a layer of polymeric piezoelectric material, for example polyvinylidene fluoride. Localized changes in physical stress on the layer, such as by way of localized pressure of heating on the layer, create a charge region which produces alteration of a beam current of an electron beam when the beam scans over the region. This alteration is detected, as by a sensing loop, to produce a data input.

  • Patent number: 4687697
Abstract: A composite is provided which has improved transverse structural integrity and flexibility and suitable for use in high temperature and high stress environments. The composite has randomly oriented high temperature resistant inorganic fibers interlocked together into a shape sustaining paper with a transverse thickness of from about 0.005 to 0.5 inch. A transverse strength providing high temperature resistant, flexible fabric, made of inorganic fibers is disposed upon at least one of the surfaces of said paper. An organic adhesive is disposed between the paper and the fabric and flexibly bonds the paper to the fabric to form a composite. The composite is sufficiently flexible that it may be folded or pleated without breaking and is capable of being used at high temperatures and at high transverse stresses without rupturing.

  • Patent number: 4685969
Abstract: Process for separating a pre-polymerized composite dental filling, such as an inlay, from the hard substance of the tooth using a separating substance consisting of a sol formed from a substance swollen and dissolved in alcohol and forming an organic or inorganic gel. The separating substance is applied as a separating layer to the cavity prior to introducing the composite into the cavity and this facilitates the removal of the composite after hardening in the cavity. The separating layer is removed from the cavity, and the inlay is then cemented into the cavity after being tempered.
