  • Patent number: 4487110
Abstract: A clamping element comprises a single-acting cylinder and a piston with strong spring return which can be cancelled out by introduction of a pressure medium into the pressure chamber of the cylinder. The spring return is brought about, at least mainly, by means of a sleeve (6a, 6b) of rubber or rubber-like material which occupies a gap (5, 5b) between the piston (3, 3a, 3b) and the cylinder wall (7, 7a, 7b) or a lining (40) arranged in the cylinder. The rubber sleeve is firmly vulcanized, firmly glued or surface-fixed in some other manner against the cylindrical exterior of the piston and against the wall of the cylinder or the said lining along an axial length which considerably exceeds the thickness of the gap.

  • Patent number: 4483286
Abstract: For a piston consisting of an Al-Si alloy having a mean linear grain diameter of the Silicon eutectic of more than 3 .mu.m for combustion engines and provided with a hard-oxidized top, the structure of the base material to be oxidized is subjected to a grain refinement in the depth to be oxidized so that the silicon eutectic has a mean linear grain diameter of less than 3 .mu.m, preferably less than 2.5 .mu.m. By this means, the resistance to erosion of the hard-oxide layer is improved. The grain refinement may be effected in the respective zones during the casting of the piston or thereafter by re-melting those zones prior to oxidizing. If the risk of erosion exists only in specific locally limited zones of a relatively large hard-oxide surface, then a grain refinement confined to these zones is sufficient.

  • Patent number: 4472533
Abstract: Catalysts for use in promoting heterogeneous chemical reactions, such as hydrogenation, cracking, dehydrogenation and Fischer-Tropsch reactions, are prepared by depositing a catalytically active metal such as nickel electrolytically onto an aluminum substrate in such a manner that the metal particles are deposited in micro-particulate form to enhance their catalytic activity. The aluminum substrate is prepared by cleaning and anodizing it, so as to deposit thereon an aluminum oxide surface film having micro porosity. Then the substrate is immersed into an electrolysis bath of solution of salt of the metal to be deposited, and subjected to alternating current electrolysis to cause the required deposition. Prior to use, the catalysts so prepared should be heated to remove absorbed gases from their porous surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4471954
Abstract: The sheet collator comprises a plurality of sheet loading pockets each associated with a sheet ejector for ejecting single sheets into a common sheet conveyor path from the respective pocket. A photo-electric, e.g. infrared sheet passage detector is mounted between each pocket and the common sheet conveyor path. In an initial set-up cycle, upon the passage of an ejected sheet, the detector will take eight samples of the transparency or reflectivity of the passing sheet of paper. These samples are averaged to generate a detection signal representative of the transparency or reflectivity of the sheet of paper. The detection signal is stored. In operation, it is compared with the detection signals generated during subsequent sheet passages. When the compared detection signals are not the same, an alarm signal will be generated and used to stop the operation of the collator at the end of a completed collating cycle.

  • Patent number: 4464174
Abstract: In a seal for two compartment mixing syringe having an outer barrel with an inner barrel partially disposed therein, and a seal on the dispensing end of the inner barrel, and a plunger disposed in the inner barrel, the improvement is wherein the seal is a combination of an aperture in the dispensing end of the inner barrel and a plug disposed in the aperture. The plug has a cylindrical portion of resilient and compressible material adapted to be compressibly disposed in the aperture but displaceable from the aperture by fluid pressure exerted by movement of the plunger in the inner barrel. A reduced diameter portion of the plug provides a fluid pathway between the inner barrel and the outer barrel when the cylindrical portion is displaced from the aperture by such fluid pressure. An increased diameter portion prevents the plug from passing through the aperture and into the outer barrel.
