  • Patent number: 5191848
Abstract: A catamaran vessel with a pair of spaced apart, parallel hulls which are made of sealed watertight configuration of composite marine material and interconnected by a deck and cabin structure with depending stilts joined to the hulls. The hulls have a wave piercing configuration in which the length to beam or fineness ratio of each hull is approximately 16.3:1 with a prow that is essentially knife-edged and vertical, the vertical section contours of the forward portion of the hull are elliptical and gradually transition to an essentially rectangular contour along the rear portion. The underside of the deck between the stilts has a convex undersurface which constitutes a planing hull structure above the top of the pair of hulls and between the stilts. The depicted vessel is power driven by motor-driven propellers at the stern of each hull.

  • Patent number: 5190714
Abstract: A clamping system for traversing and clamping molds in a molding machine, the clamping system including a toggle-type clamp arrangement defined by a plurality of pivotally connected links. A movable crosshead is connected with one end of the toggle and is carried on a crosshead guide, and a ball screw is rotatably secured to the movable crosshead to extend in the direction opposite from the molds and through a stationary platen. A ball nut rotatably carried by the stationary platen is in engagement with the ball screw and is drivingly connected with a first motor to axially move the ball screw to provide between the molds a clamping force sufficient to resist separation of the molds during high pressure injection of molding material. A second motor is drivingly coupled with the ball screw and is movable therewith in an axial direction. The second motor is adapted to rotate the ball screw for rapid traverse movement of the movable crosshead to rapidly bring the molds into and out of contact.

  • Patent number: 5189807
Abstract: A method for determining and, when appropriate, compensating for the linear (heat) expansion of elongated bodies (1), such as physical length scales (1) or of elongated bodies which are intended to support physical length scales on, e.g., instruments or measuring machines equipped with physical length scales, in which measurement errors occur because of length deviations of the scale (1) as a result of deviations from a reference temperature at which the scale was calibrated. The method is mainly characterized by measuring the linear expansion of the body (1) in relation to at least one reference (6) made of a material whose coefficient of linear (heat) expansion (.alpha.) deviates from the coefficient of linear (heat) expansion of the body material, and thereafter determining, when appropriate, a compensation factor for correcting the body length. The invention also relates to an arrangement for carrying out the method.

  • Patent number: 5178458
Abstract: An extruder screw mixing head that is adapted to be carried by an extruder screw at a downstream portion of the screw for improved distributive mixing. The mixing head includes a central body that tapers and diverges in a downstream direction to provide a progressively diminishing flow channel in an axial direction of the mixing head. Four equally spaced flights of equal pitch are provided on the outer periphery of the mixing head, and each flight has a series of peripheral recesses that are spaced from each other along the flights and that permit flow of plasticated material between adjacent flow channels defined by the spaced flights to improve homogeneity of the material. The recesses are so configured that their respective leading and trailing edges are aligned to define circumferential angles with the longitudinal axis of the mixing head, so that the inter-channel flow areas of the recesses increase in a direction toward the outlet of the extruder barrel.

  • Patent number: 5174685
Abstract: Apparatus for laying flexible pipe within a trench and for embedding the flexible pipe within a bed of gravel in a single operation. The apparatus includes a gravel hopper and a guide sleeve for guiding a pipe to be laid within the trench. The hopper includes a skid or sled arrangement to permit it to be pulled along the trench bottom, and has a width to permit it to be completely positioned within the trench and thereby accommodate a wide variety of trench depths. A feed guide support stanchion extends from the front portion of the hopper for facilitating the feeding of a flexible pipe into a pipe guide inlet positioned adjacent the bottom portion of the front wall of the hopper. The hopper interior is divided into a main, narrow portion, and a rear, enlarged portion, the side walls of which are adapted to engage the side walls of the trench. The hopper rear portion side walls have a small surface area to minimize sliding friction with the trench walls.

  • Patent number: 5174369
Abstract: A sanitary concentric tube heat exchanger for cooling or heating flowable or pumpable products is disclosed. In one embodiment, two concentric tubes are sealed together with inlet and outlet openings. The product is allowed to flow through the outer of the two tubes while the heating or cooling medium flows through the inner tube. In another embodiment, a third concentric tube surrounds the product tube and is used for the flow of additional heating or cooling medium. A securing clamp open on one end of the product tube secures the product tube to the outer surface of the inner tube and can be easily dismantled for cleaning purposes. A seal assembly secures the other end of the product tube to the outer surface of the inner tube and permits relative movement between the inner tube and the product tube for accommodation of thermal effects during operation, and also to allow the asembly to be easily dismantled for cleaning or inspection.

  • Patent number: 5164601
Abstract: Method for detecting marks (3) present on a paper web (1), which consists of successively producing and preferably recording light-intensity data in the form of intensity indications, using two alternate set-point values of light intensity representative of the presence of a mark or a non-mark. The method uses a process, deciding whether a certain light-intensity indication (V(new)j), shall be attributed to a mark, by selecting as a set-point value (V(old)j), one of the two alternate set points, either the nearest preceding indication (V(old)j) which has been adjudged as indicative of a non-mark and which essentially indicates light background of the paper web (1), or a preceding indication (V(old)j) which has been adjudged as indicative of a non-mark and which has been subjected to an intensity reduction of pre-determined magnitude (UP). There is also an apparatus for carrying out the method.

  • Patent number: 5149113
Abstract: A convertible stroller and car seat including a housing positioned below a seat portion for receiving a pair of front wheels and a pair of rear wheels in retracted condition. An operating handle extends outwardly through the rear wall of the housing and is connected to a rotatable actuator disk from which connecting rods extend to respective wheel assemblies supporting the wheels. Movement of the handle from side to side causes the actuating disk to rotate, thereby either extending the wheels from the wheel housing or retracting the wheels into the wheel housing. One pair of diagonally opposed wheel carriers is adapted to pivot directly into and out of the wheel housing, and the remaining pair of diagonally opposed wheel carriers pivots into and out of the wheel housing and also rotate by 90.degree. so that the four wheels when fully extended each lie in parallel planes for ease of use of the stroller.

  • Patent number: 5149296
Abstract: A method and a machine for processing belly flaps from a front part of a fish which has been parted into a rear part and a front part. According to applicant's co-pending U.S. application Ser. No. 716,738, it is known to move by spiked chain at each side, the front part of a fish with the belly foremost and the head farthest back, along a fixed straight track to a fixed U-shaped beam, which is a belly scraper. The belly of the front part is threaded upon the belly scraper which scrapes the inside of the belly cavity so that the entrails are loosened from the front part and moved into and along the belly scraper. The leading end part of the belly scraper has a knife edge and an elevation in the floor, and cuts the pectoral nose from the gills and the tongue so that the tongue moves into the belly scraper, which pierces downward and out from the head through the pectoral nose. The jaw bones move on top of the belly scraper along its upper edge, and the belly flaps move to the sides.
