  • Patent number: 5229614
Abstract: A method for coupling radiation in an infrared detector of the kind which uses quantum wells that are comprised of thin layers of, e.g., gallium arsenide (GaAs) surrounded by aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs). The invention is characterized in that a two-dimensional crossed grating (6), a so-called 2-D grating, is constructed on the top of the detector mesa of the detector on the side opposite the surface through which incident light (5) enters the detector. The grating (6) is caused to spread the incident light in different directions. According to one preferred embodiment, the detector also includes a cladding layer (14) which, together with the crossed grating, forms a wave guide.

  • Patent number: 5211373
Abstract: An expanding gate valve having replaceable valve seats that are capable of longer operating life than conventional valve seats. The valve seats of the present invention have sealing faces that are case hardened to a hardness of about Rockwell 60 C and are devoid of resilient sealing rings in the sealing faces. Additionally, the seats are of floating construction, and are adapted to move both axially and to tilt relative to the seat recesses that are provided in the valve body. Finally, a resilient biasing arrangement is provided at the rear portion of the seat to bias it outwardly relative to the seat recesses to insure substantially complete surface engagement between the sealing face of the seat ring and the face of the respective gate surface.

  • Patent number: 5208049
Abstract: An extrusion blow molding machine including an extruder and an extrusion die head, the extruder and extrusion die head carried on a carriage member. The carriage member is movable linearly along an extruder support frame of generally rectangular configuration, the extruder support frame extending laterally outwardly beyond a supporting mold clamp support frame that is adapted to support a movable blow mold. The carriage is shiftable in a horizontal direction so that the extrusion head can be selectively positioned above the blow mold when in an operating position, and can be shifted laterally outwardly in one direction to be positioned beyond the mold clamp support frame when in an inoperative position, to provide convenient access to the extrusion head from below for purposes of maintenance, cleaning, and the like.

  • Patent number: 5202135
Abstract: Trimming apparatus for trimming the top flash, neck flash, handle opening flash, and bottom flash from a blow molded plastic bottle. The handle opening flash is removed by a punch and anvil to act against the handle opening flash and push it laterally away from the handle for separation from the bottle. The top and neck flash, and the bottom flash, are each removed by respective gripper devices that grip respective portions of the flash and pull the flash linearly away from the bottle to effect separation of the flash from the bottle. The handle opening flash removing device remains in position within the handle opening to thereby serve to hold the bottle against vertical upward movement as the top and bottom flash are being removed. Upper and lower grippers having a pair of gripper jaws are provided to pull the flash in an axial direction from the top and bottom of a bottle, and to avoid the need for precise positioning of the bottle relative to a flash cutter.

  • Patent number: 5199391
Abstract: A rotary internal combustion engine including a plurality of toroidal cylinders and toroidal pistons that are slidably carried within the cylinders. Combustion of an air-fuel mixture within the respective cylinders provides a series of circumferential power strokes for more efficient operation. The pistons and cylinders are carried by a pair of side-by-side, coaxial drive rotors, the output power pulses of which are transmitted through a drive clutch and planetary gear assembly to an engine output drive shaft. The drive clutch and planetary gear assembly includes four overrunning clutches and a planetary gear train to smoothly transmit the successive intermittent engine power strokes to the output drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 5200205
Abstract: Extruder barrel temperature control apparatus in the form of a plurality of axially spaced tubular shells positioned in end-to-end relationship on the outer surface of a tubular extruder barrel. Each of the shells includes individual resistance heater elements embedded in the shell wall for providing heat to maintain a desired shell temperature. Each shell includes two groups of outwardly extending cooling fins, each group axially spaced from the other, and each group of fins has an associated air blower positioned below the fins and supported by an outer casing surrounding the extruder barrel. The outer casing includes an internal shroud to confine the cooling air flow so it is directed over and along the cooling fins. The heating elements and the blower motors are connected with a suitable control system for providing and maintaining a desired temperature level at the barrel inner surface. Six such shells defining six respective heating and cooling zones are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5196809
Abstract: A transistor in which the emitter terminal is coupled to ground through a filter capacitor. The filter capacitor has a capacitance of from about 0.2 .mu.f to about 22 .mu.f and can be connected either by itself or in parallel with a resistor, depending upon the circuit in which it is used. The incorporation of a filter capacitor of such a capacitance level provides greatly improved gain and less distortion of the input signal, to permit a high output to be achieved in fewer amplifier stages and with less current draw and heating than in conventional transistor amplifier stage circuits. Additionally, the transistor can be provided in a unitary structure by incorporating the filter capacitor directly on the transistor chip, and can also be provided by incorporating the transistor and a resistor within the casing of a filter capacitor.
