  • Patent number: 6192384
Abstract: A processor particularly useful in multimedia applications such as image processing is based on a stream programming model and has a tiered storage architecture to minimize global bandwidth requirements. The processor has a stream register file through which the processor's functional units transfer streams to execute processor operations. Load and store instructions transfer streams between the stream register file and a stream memory; send and receive instructions transfer streams between stream register files of different processors; and operate instructions pass streams between the stream register file and computational kernels. Each of the computational kernels is capable of performing compound vector operations. A compound vector operation performs a sequence of arithmetic operations on data read from the stream register file, i.e., a global storage resource, and generates a result that is written back to the stream register file.

  • Patent number: 6186754
Abstract: A thrust bearing mechanism receives thrust force which is an element force of a compression counter-force acting on a movable scroll member, and which is perpendicular to the orbital direction of the movable scroll member. The thrust bearing mechanism includes plural substantially cylindrically-shaped first and second rollers. The first roller rotates in one direction, and the second roller rotates perpendicularly to the first roller. Thus, the contact surface area of the rollers is larger than that in which spherical rollers receive the thrust force, thereby suppressing the compressor from being enlarged to accommodate increased thrust forces, and improving the reliability and durability of the compressor.

  • Patent number: 6186081
Abstract: Waste (such as domestic garbage, industrial waste, and bulky refuse) or sewage sludge is pretreated by pyrolysis under an oxygen-poor atmosphere to provide solid pyrolysis residues and a pyrolysis gas. The solid pyrolysis residues are mechanically treated to provide a coarse fraction and a fine fraction. The coarse fraction is mechanically separated and fed to a metal bath reactor containing a metal bath and a liquid slag floating on the metal bath. The fine fraction entrained in a carrier gas is fed via a nozzle in order to carburize the metal bath. The carburized metal bath functions to reduce metal oxides from the liquid slag floated thereon, thereby purifying the liquid slag. At least a portion of the pyrolysis gas is used to smelt and heat the liquid slag.

  • Patent number: 6188778
Abstract: The present invention measures traffic congestion by utilizing a video camera to capture images of vehicles travelling on a road and analyzing sample points that are assigned to different aspects of the images. For example, presence and movement sample points correspond to the expected location and motion of the vehicles respectively. The sample points adjacent to one another from either movement or congestion blocks. The blocks that have a ratio of movement sample points to all other sample points within the block greater than a predetermined level are moveable blocks. The remaining presence sample points in the image signify congestion sample points and form congestion blocks. Congestion blocks have a ratio of congestion sample points to all other sample points within the block greater than a predetermined level. Therefore, the state of traffic congestion is measured based upon the resultant movement and congestion blocks.

  • Patent number: 6185983
Abstract: A method for zero setting of a measuring device in which particles to be measured are subjected to tangential acceleration in a whirling impeller and torque exerted on the vanes of the impeller in reaction to the Coriolis force of acceleration of the particles is being measured as an indication of mass flow rate. The flow of material is fed to a central part of the impeller and by centrifugal force is thrown outwardly of the impeller. The flow is measured by an electronic device including a microcomputer. When the flow is absent, such condition being continually sensed for, the mean value of the torque during a chosen time or a number of revolutions of the impeller is automatically determined and memorized. This memorized torque value is used as a tare value until a next time a new tare value can be memorized.
