Abstract: An infrared sensor includes a linear array of plural photoconductive sensor elements, and a similarly linear multiplexing circuit arranged in side-by-side relation with the linear array of sensor elements. The multiplexing circuit includes a matching plurality of signal input ports, and a wirebond of plural conductors substantially in parallel conducts signals from the plural sensor elements of the array to the respective signal input ports of the multiplexer circuit. The multiplexer circuit includes a matching plurality of adaptation circuits or cells interposed between the respective sensor elements of the array and the input ports of the multiplexing circuit. Each adaptation cell includes a multi-position switch which by its position varies the transfer function of a feed back circuit of the adaptation cell. Plural modes of signal processing for each individual sensor element of the array are provided according to the positions of the multi-position switches of the plural adaptation cells.

  • Patent number: 5598344
Abstract: A methodology for generating structural descriptions of complex digital devices from high-level descriptions and specifications. The methodology uses a systematic technique to map and enforce consistency of the semantics imbedded in the intent of the original, high-level descriptions. The design activity is essentially a series of transformations operating upon various levels of design representations. At each level, the intended meaning (semantics) and formal software manipulations are captured to derive a more detailed level describing hardware meeting the design goals. Important features of the methodology are: capturing the users concepts, intent, specification, descriptions, constraints and trade-offs; architectural partitioning; what-if analysis at a high level; sizing estimation; timing estimation; architectural trade-off; conceptual design with implementation estimation; and timing closure.

  • Patent number: 5596166
Abstract: A penetrating vehicle having a rocket motor includes an elongated projectile body with a forward section for holding a payload and a rearward section for housing the rocket motor. The vehicle contains a fuse that ignites the propellent of the rocket motor during impact of the projectile body with a surface barrier. The propellent provides high thrust in a rapid burn time and thereby counteracts undesirable deceleration forces acting on the body during impact. The high thrust also promotes a maximum penetration of the projectile body within the surface barrier.

  • Patent number: 5594430
Abstract: A programmable time lock includes a microprocessor, which senses the angular position of a key shaft via a sensor/encoder. The microprocessor includes ROM and RAM memory circuits, a timer, and a clock, and it can activate a stepper motor to control the position of a detent pin. The microprocessor is also connected to a display, which has fields for hours, minutes and seconds, as well as for the days of the week, for a cursor for each day, and for a low-power indicator. System time, as well as opening times for the lock may be set and changed simply by turning the key according to predefined routines. A method for operating the lock includes sets of steps for each of several routines: setting real time, setting opening times for each selected day of the week, and specialty routines including adding an intermediate opening time, cancelling the opening time for selected days, adjusting the system time, for example to change to or from daylight savings time, and verifying the version of the time lock in use.

  • Patent number: 5594611
Abstract: An integrated circuit structure with input/output gate voltage regulation and parasitic zener and junction diodes for protection against damage resulting from electrostatic discharge (ESD) events. The circuit includes a first protective FET connected between an input/output pad and a ground potential of the integrated circuit. A diode voltage regulator is also connected between the gate of the first protective FET and a reference potential of the integrated circuit. The first protective FET receives a voltage from its gate-drain overlap capacitance during an ESD event. The diode is operative during an ESD event to provide a sufficient voltage to the first FET gate to permit a desired ESD current flow through the first protective FET. In one embodiment the first FET is an NMOS device and the diode voltage regulator is a series of p-n forward biased diodes.

  • Patent number: 5590778
Abstract: A double-sterile package for critical-use medical apparatus includes an inner first container including an outer boundary wall impervious to microorganisms and being closed except for defining a hole. A patch of gas-permeable micro-porous sheet material is secured to the outer boundary wall spanning and closing the hole. The gas-permeable sheet material is sufficient to exclude environmental microorganisms from entering the inner first container. The first container is received into and nested within a conformal second container also having a boundary wall impervious to microorganisms and being closed except for defining a hole. This hole of the second container is also closed by a patch of the gas-permeable micro-porous sheet material, and the holes of the first and second containers are in gas-flow communication with one another. The medical apparatus within the nested containers is sterilized by evacuation of air and introduction of a sterilizing gas via the gas-permeable patches.

  • Patent number: 5592492
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for selective convolutional interleaving or de-interleaving of symbols or data bits, a plurality of segments are defined in random access memory, with each segment including a different number of locations for storing symbols. Previously stored symbols are sequentially read out of current locations in the segments respectively, and new symbols are read into the current locations. Next locations in the segments are redesignated as current locations respectively, and the operation is repeated until all of the symbols have been interleaved or de-interleaved. The first location in each segment is designated by a respective segment pointer. The current and next locations are designated as relative offset pointers from the segment pointers, and these locations are incremented by incrementing the offset pointers. Interleaving or de-interleaving operation is determined by the direction in which the segments are sequentially selected for the read/write operations.

  • Patent number: 5587923
Abstract: A cell placement for a microelectronic integrated circuit includes a plurality of cells interconnected by nets of wiring. A method for estimating routing density in the placement includes superimposing a pattern of contiguous tiles over the placement, with each of the tiles having edges. Bounding boxes are constructed around the nets, and net probable densities are calculated within each bounding box for the wiring required by each net for each edge respectively. The net probable densities are summed to produce total probable densities of wiring required by all of the nets for each edge respectively. The net probable density for each edge is calculated as being equal to a wiring capacity of the edge divided by the sum of the wiring capacity of the edge and all other unobscured edges within the bounding box that are collinear with the edge respectively.

  • Patent number: 5588029
Abstract: A Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) video/audio data bitstream comprises frames of encoded audio data, each of which includes a plurality of integrally encoded subframes, which are decoded by an audio decoder for presentation. A synchronization unit controls the decoder to skip a subframe if a predetermined decoding time for the subframe is earlier than a current time, and to repeat the subframe if the predetermined decoding time is later than the current time. A typical MPEG audio frame includes 12 subframes, such that skipping or repeating a subframe is 1/12 as noticeable as skipping or repeating an entire frame. A buffer memory stores one or more subframes prior to decoding, such that the subframes can be skipped or repeated by manipulation of a read pointer for the memory.
