  • Patent number: 4998825
Abstract: Dimensional change in a tire cord (13) under thermomechanical stress is determined by a device (10) including an oven (12) for receiving and controlling the temperature of a preselected length of the cord (13), grips (14,15) for holding and selectively positioning the entire preselected length of cord (13) within the oven (12), and means (16) including an angular displacement transducer (51) for measuring changes in the preselected length of cord (13). Means (16) may also include weights (52,53) for the selective application of mechanical stress to the material. The steps employed in determining such dimensional change include inserting a length of cord (13) into grips (14,15), positioning the entire length of cord (13) (including the portion of grips (14,15) holding the cord (13)) within oven (12), controlling the temperature of the cord (13) in the oven (12), and measuring changes in the length of cord (13).

  • Patent number: 4977772
Abstract: A method of forming container end panels from a sheet of material includes inserting the material into a press at a first level, blanking the material at that level, passing the material through a die and preliminarily forming it in a continuous stroke but at a second level and transferring it laterally at the second level for reforming and curling. The apparatus includes blanking and forming tooling at a first station and reforming and curling tooling at second and third stations. The reforming and curling tooling is disposed at the second level and the first, second and third stations are interconnected by an endless, apertured belt also disposed at the second level. An alternative embodiment involves disposing the first station tooling at an angle with respect to the press centerline, feeding the material into the press in a first direction and moving the preliminarily formed ends in opposite directions normal to the feed direction to second and third stations disposed on opposite ends of the press.

  • Patent number: 4957471
Abstract: An adjustable locked center and dynamic tensioner include both a method for setting tension in a belt or chain drive system and apparatus for setting the friction torque so as to match the system setting torque. The method includes forcing the tensioner against a stable mounting surface with sufficient spring load that a target friction torque will be required to rotate the tensioner. The tensioner arm is then rotated into the belt or chain until, when the setting torque is removed, the belt or chain will counter rotate the tensioner arm and the target friction torque in the tensioner will cause the target setting tension to remain in the system. The apparatus includes a tensioner arm pivotally mounted on a fixed surface with a spring engaging the arm and being clamped against the fixed surface. Modifications include introducing a compliant coupler such as an elastomeric bushing or spring between the stable mounting surface and the tensioner arm.

  • Patent number: 4951806
Abstract: A double-belt conveyor band with a continuously revolving conveyor band, the belt of which is supported on a band feeder and in connection with a steep segment on trough roller assemblies, and is supported flatly on the steep segment, as well as with a continuously revolving covering band. The belt is buckled in the conveyor seam for the formation of closed conveyor spaces, preferably between traction reinforcements positioned externally, the shear-resistant lateral reinforcements acting in cooperation therewith. The belt ends are pressed on one another and the longitudinal edges of the belt are held together. It is provided in accordance with the invention that, in order to hold together the belts on both longitudinal edges of the cover band, fasteners projecting externally are provided with opposing apertures to which the longitudinal edges of the conveyor belt, during the running of the trough roller assemblies, approach or move away from during the running of the conveyor belt.

  • Patent number: 4922834
Abstract: A system for storing cylindrical objects includes at least two article supporting pallets having mating projecting noses and oppositely disposed recesses. The pallets comprise at least upper deck boards for supporting the articles on the one hand and engaging a supporting surface such as a floor on the tops of risers or other vertically disposed restrainers on the other hand. The projecting noses and opposed recesses are preferably tapered for ease of alignment. The pallet is dimensioned so that the pallet has a width dimension approximating two and three quarters the diameter of a selected article, a length dimension approximating two diameters of the selected article and the nose projects approximately one half the diameter of the selected article. The system also encompasses the use of a series of pallet sizes, wherein each pallet differs from the other by about 15 percent in size, which permits the user to achieve optimal storage density for a broader range of diameters for such articles.
