  • Patent number: 6885752
Abstract: A hearing compensation system for the hearing impaired comprises a plurality of bandpass filters having an input connected to an input transducer and each bandpass filter having an output connected to the input of one of a plurality of multiplicative AGC circuits whose outputs are summed together and connected to the input of an output transducer. The multiplicative AGC circuits attenuate acoustic signals having a constant background level without the loss of speech intelligibility. The identification of the background noise portion of the acoustic signal is made by the constancy of the envelope of the input signal in each of the several frequency bands. The background noise that will be suppressed includes multi-talker speech babble, fan noise, feedback whistle, florescent light hum, and white noise.

  • Patent number: 6882691
Abstract: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver embodiments of the invention demodulate quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) signals transmitted in the five GHz frequency band and digitally correct for frequency offset errors in their digital signal processing (DSP) units. A method comprises a step in which an OFDM transmission is I/Q sampled and a portion of the received packet is selected. It is assumed that the coarse frequency offset has been estimated and that the remaining frequency offset after coarse frequency offset compensation does not exceed ±10 kHz (valid for 802.11a PHY implementation only). It is also assumed that a timing reference has been determined. A cost function is used to determine a fine-frequency offset. Once the fine frequency offset is determined, the estimate is used in the downstream digital signal processing.

  • Patent number: 6879585
Abstract: A system and method for a user to initiate a data only session with a mobile terminal over a wireless network configured with an IS-683 protocol. The user selects a system with the mobile terminal in order to place a call with the wireless network. Next, a call is originated with the mobile terminal to the wireless network. A traffic channel is assigned for the call originated with the mobile terminal. The call is routed to a web server of the wireless network that collects user information from the mobile terminal. Finally, the web server will initiate the mobile data programming session with the mobile terminal such that the user does not need outside assistance from a customer service representative to initiate the call.

  • Patent number: 6877986
Abstract: An element (10) comprises sealed cavities (24) arranged according to a regular pattern. Each cavity (24) contains a product such as a wax which changes in volume, in reversible fashion, when a given temperature threshold is crossed, together with an individual heating organ (26). The cavities (24) are separated from the front face (10a) of the element by a mobile or deformable organ (38). A separate piloting for each of the heating organs (26) makes it possible to make the relief of the front face (10a) of the element evolve in controlled fashion. Such an element can be used to re-transcribe, in relief, tactile (visually handicapped) or visual information.

  • Patent number: 6877121
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for testing Alternating Current (AC) coupled interconnects of a circuit using boundary scan methodology are disclosed. A Boundary Scan Cell (BSC) of a transmitting Integrated Circuit (IC) generates an AC signal based on a value of the BSC of the transmitting IC and a reference clock. A Sync Pulse cell at the receiving IC generates a sync pulse signal to the BSC of the receiving IC. The BSC of the receiving IC captures a default phase of the AC signal in relation to the sync pulse signal and also captures a phase of a source of input signal. The BSC of the receiving IC then compares the phase of a source of input signal with the phase of said AC signal in relation to the phase captured at the snyc pulse signal and sends out an output signal based on the comparison.

  • Patent number: 6875686
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for fabricating a damascene type structure of interconnections on a semiconductor device. It includes the following steps: formation of a first level of conductors in a first electric insulating layer and of a second level of conductors in a second electric insulating layer, with the conductors in the first level being arranged with a pre-determined spacing in order to allow, in a later step, the formation of air or vacuum gaps between the conductors in the first level, elimination of the second electric insulating layer, elimination, at least partial, of the first electric insulating layer in order to eliminate at least some parts of the first layer corresponding to the gaps to be formed, deposit, over the structure thus obtained, of a material with low permittivity, with this deposit not filling the space between the conductors in the first level whose spacing has been planned to allow the formation of gaps.

  • Patent number: 6874975
Abstract: A soil reinforced retaining wall for an earthen embankment is formed by screwing nails into the embankment at spaced intervals. The nails have helical threads extending therearound of such proportion and pitch as to screw into the formation as the nails are driven into place with a vibratory hammer, without prior boring of the embankment to accommodate the nails, or the necessity of cementing the nails into place. The wall is constructed from the top down and face panels are progressively assembled over the embankment and secured in place by the nails. In a preferred embodiment the nails have an elongate tubular body of a polyhedral cross-section and the threads are formed by twisting the body about its longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 6876697
Abstract: A transmitter of a wireless modem may be ramped up with quicker ramp up times and better splatter control by using software controllable ramp up techniques. A digital data signal source sends data to digital-to-analog converters used to generate a ramp with the desired duration and shape for maximum gain with minimum splatter. A transmitter digital-to-analog converter is sent constant I/Q data to bias the input of the I/Q modulator to maximum gain when combined with a direct current voltage. A controller digital-to-analog converter is sent incremented ramp data to shape the ramp and provide maximum gain at the output of the I/Q modulator.

  • Patent number: 6873281
Abstract: Methods of and apparatuses for optimizing quantization noise cancellation in multi-phase sampled MASH ADCs are disclosed. A test signal is combined with quantization noise produced by a delta-sigma modulator. Two parallel adaptive filters (i.e. even and odd filters) are configured to receive respective even and odd samples of a digital output signal of a MASH ADC analog modulator. Adaptive coefficients for the even adaptive filter are derived from correlation results between the even samples of the test signal and associated even samples of the final digital output signal. Similarly, adaptive coefficients for the odd adaptive filter are derived from correlation results between the odd samples of the test signal and associated odd samples of the final digital output signal. Using the adaptive coefficients, the even and odd adaptive filters are able to independently compensate for analog variations in the two paths.

  • Patent number: 6873114
Abstract: A method tests a plasma processing system having a chamber, an RF power source, and a matching network. An RF power signal is generated from the RF power source to the chamber without igniting any plasma within the chamber. The voltage of the RF power signal, the current of the RF power signal, and the phase of the RF power signal, received by the chamber is measured while holding other parameters affecting the chamber constant. A value representative of an impedance of the chamber is computed based on the voltage, the current, and the phase. The value is then compared with a reference value to determine any defects in the plasma processing system. The reference value is representative of the impedance of a defect-free chamber.
