  • Patent number: 5219532
Abstract: A reactor for refining resid includes an elongated vertical vessel containing a bed of catalyst which is expanded or ebullated by a liquid/gas mixture. The mixture rises in an updraft through the bed and then is recirculated with an increased velocity by an ebullating pump. To reduce gas holdup of the ebullated bed and to promote a more uniform flow, the gas is entrapped by two cascaded stages of baffles which have an internal conical shape to guide, direct, and entrap the gas. One of these two stages has a shape which creates a countercurrent in the flowing liquid to deflect any catalyst particles which might otherwise be elutriated by the increased velocity.

  • Patent number: 5213168
Abstract: A curve drilling assembly operable with a rotary drill string is provided for drilling a curved subterranean borehole. The assembly includes a curve guide, a rotary drill bit, an imbalance force assembly, and a bearing assembly. The curve guide is connectable with the drill string for deflecting the drill string toward the outside radius of the curved borehole. The imbalance force assembly, which preferably is provided by selectably disposing cutting elements on the drill bit, is rotatable with the drill string for creating a net imbalance force along a net imbalance force vector substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the drill bit during drilling. The bearing assembly is rotatable with the drill string and is located in the curve drilling assembly near the cutting elements of the drill bit for intersecting a force plane formed by the longitudinal bit axis and the net imbalance force vector and for substantially continuously contacting the borehole wall during drilling.

  • Patent number: 5206701
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for obtaining spectral information and quantifying the physical properties of a sample. The apparatus comprises a light source and a high-efficiency fiber optic switch means communicating with the light source for directing the light alternatively along at least two channels, the two channels comprising at least one reference channel and at least one sample channel. A sample means communicates with the sample channel for providing an interface between the light and the sample. A fiber optic means comprising a high-efficiency fiber optic switch and/or an optical coupler communicates with the sample channels and the reference channels and directs the light alternatively from the reference and sample channels to a mode scrambler. A wavelength discrimination device separates the light from the mode scrambler into component wavelengths and provides spectral information for the determination of the physical properties of the sample.

  • Patent number: 5199471
Abstract: In the process, fuel is pumped from a storage tank through a dispenser and nozzle into a customer's tank. Hydrocarbon vapors emitted during fueling are collected through a vapor recovery passageway between the inner and outer spouts of the nozzle and conveyed by a vapor pump through vapor return lines into the storage tank. A portion of the vapors in the vapor return lines condense and are removed with the nozzle's condensate pickup tube. The removed condensate is dispensed into the customer's tank.

  • Patent number: 5186904
Abstract: A laboratory instrument provides a small model reactor which better simulates a back mixed reactor containing a catalyst. The reactor is especially valuable for simulating commercial scale hydrotreating of petroleum resid, coal, and other non-distillable hydrocarbons to obtain some distillable products. An important feature is a magnetically driven pump completely enclosed within the reactor shell of the simulator. All embodiments provide a high temperature and pressure, low liquid to catalyst volume, model reactor where an entire process is carried out within the simulator shell under substantially the conditions prevailing in the full scale reactor.

  • Patent number: 5172068
Abstract: A predistortion circuit for cancelling third-order distortion products produced by a non-linear device includes a signal source which drives a first and second circuit branch each including a plurality of series connected diodes having approximately exponential transfer functions. The output signal taken as the summation of the two signals processed by the branch circuits is coupled through an amplifier to the device to be linearized. In an alternate predistortion configuration, the signal source drives a phase splitting means which produces two signals of equal amplitude but opposite phase, wherein each of the signals drives a respective one of the branch circuits. A phase combining means performs an out of-phase combination of the signals processed by the branch circuits.

  • Patent number: 5048907
Abstract: The invention is directed to laterally confined optical waveguide devices in semiconductors using quantum-well structures. An optical waveguide having a core comprising at least one quantum-well structure is interposed between first and second cladding regions such that an optical beam inserted into the core region spreads laterally with respect to a primary direction of the beam. Contacts are fabricated on the surface of the top cladding region and serve as means for applying an electric field to the core of the waveguide. The electric field induces a change in the refractive index of the portion of the quantum-well structure within the field. The change in the refractive index functions to laterally confine the propagation of the optical beam to the region of the core within the electric field, while maintaining a low loss transmission.
