Abstract: Fully alkoxysilane-functionalized aliphatic polyamine compounds (e.g., fully functionalized dialkylenetriamine compounds) can be formed by reacting a dialkylenetriamine (e.g., diethylenetriamine) with a compound comprising an amine-reactive group and an alkoxysilane group (e.g., an isocyanatoalkylalkoxysilane). These functionalized compounds find utility as the predominant component in forming organic/inorganic hybrid materials via sol-gel processing.

Abstract: Solubilized metal (dialkylaminoalcoholate) compounds in organic solvent can serve as a source of metal values for metal oxide-containing superconductor compositions. Stable solutions, resistant to precipitation problems, can be formed by reaction of a dialkylaminoalkanol with a metal alkoxide followed by removal of by-product alkanol by vacuum distillation below the reflux temperature of the solution. Exemplary metals include copper, yttrium, barium, calcium, and bismuth, lanthanum and strontium.
Abstract: A bis(pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol) alkylphosphonate compound, such as one comprising an alkyl group of from about one to four carbon atoms, preferably bis(pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol) methylphosphonate, is a flame retardant compound. Such a compound can be prepared by the transesterification of a diphenyl alkyl phosphonate carrying the desired alkyl group with pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol. An alternative process of preparation comprises the reaction of pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol, a trialkylamine, and an alkylphosphonic dihalide.
Abstract: The adhesion of epoxy-resin containing resist compositions to a copper surface, which resist compositions are exposed to actinic radiation, developed and hardened, is enhanced by contacting the copper surface with an N-heterocyclic compound comprising --NH.sub.2 groups and drying the copper surface comprising the N-heterocyclic compound prior to application of the resist. Printed wiring boards produced by a partially additive process can be produced using this adhesion enhancement technique.
Abstract: An organotin stabilizer mixture comprising: (a) monoalkyltin mercaptoalcohol (b) a monoalkyltin mercaptoacid ester; and (c) a monoalkyltin sulfide provides improved early color, lubricity, and weatherability to rigid vinyl polymer formulations. The formulation may also contain a monoalkyltin mercaptoalcohol ester as an optional component.
Abstract: A heat exchanger having on a first and a second side inlets and outlets, respectively, for a preferably gaseous heat exchanging medium, and having a heat exchanging component made of a high thermal conductive material, such as metal, and comprised of a package of lamellae, in which the heat exchanging material has a structure permeable to the heat exchanging medium, and in which channels for the medium passing from the inlet side to the outlet side are formed, such that medium flowing in via the inlet channels can flow to the adjacent outlet channels at an angle to the direction of entry via the heat exchanging material.
Abstract: .alpha.-aminonitrile compounds can be synthesized by reacting a carbonyl compound, for example an aldehyde, such as, one containing an alkyl group, with a fatty amine hydrohalide, for example, a fatty amine hydrochloride, in the presence of a cyanide source, for example, an alkali metal cyanide.
Abstract: Blends of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) matrix and a thermotropic liquid crystalline segmented block copolymer comprising rod (e.g., aromatic ester mesogen units containing flexible alkylene spacers) and flexible coil polymer blocks of poly(butylene terephthalate) can be used as molding compositions or in the formation of fibers and films.

Abstract: An aramid yarn, preferably poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide), is coated with a water swellable superabsorbent material. The swelling value of the yarn is at least 60. The superabsorbent provides water blocking capability to the yarn, so that it is suitable for use as a strength member, for example, in water tight optical communication cables. The yarn is made by successively treating an aramid yarn with a water-in-oil emulsion, a superabsorbent material being present in the water phase of the emulsion, and removing the liquid components from the treated yarn by evaporation.
Abstract: Supported non-oxide metal carbide-containing catalysts are provided which comprise: (a) an oxide support, such as alumina or cordierite; (b) a passivating layer of a ceramic, such as silicon carbide; and (c) a non-oxide metal ceramic catalytic component, such as a Group VI metal carbide or nitride, preferably tungsten carbide or molybdenum carbide.

Abstract: Epoxy functional copolymers of a higher .alpha.-olefin, and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid ester formed by copolymerization of olefin, acid ester and ethylenically unsaturated glycidyl compound can be used to form nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and/or sulfur-containing lubricant additives by reaction of the epoxy functionality in such a copolymer with glycidyl-reactive compounds containing nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and/or sulfur atoms. Alternatively, the copolymerization reaction can utilize the olefin, unsaturated acid ester, and an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing the nitrogen, phosphorus and/or sulfur atom, which compound is formed by reaction of ethylenically unsaturated glycidyl compound and an epoxy-reactive nitrogen, phosphorus, and/or sulfur-containing compound.

Abstract: Bis(carboalkoxy-substituted m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 compounds, useful as polymerizable monomers, can be formed in one step by reacting a functionalized dihydroxy aromatic compound with a dihalopolyether. In the same reaction, carboalkoxy-substituted m-phenylene-16-crown-5 is formed. Other mono- and di-functionalized bis(phenylene) crown ethers can be made by one step as well as multistep synthesis from similar starting materials.

Abstract: Tungsten carbide/zeolite catalysts useful in the hydrogenation of unsaturated sulfur containing compounds and in particular in the production of tetrahydrothiophene are provided. Also provided is a process for the production of tetrahydrothiophene from thiophene using the tungsten carbide/zeolite catalysts taught, which effects the selective production of tetrahydrothiophene without producing large quantities of H.sub.2 S and unwanted hydrocarbons.
Abstract: Polyketones can be formed in enhanced yield by conducting the polymerization of the carbon monoxide and olefin monomers used to form the polyketone in a gas phase polymerization process in the presence of an effective amount of a liquid, non-polymerizable diluent which is effective in increasing the amount of polyketone formed over that which would be formed in the substantial absence of the diluent. Preferably, the catalyst is supported on a high surface area support (e.g., a carbon monoxide-ethylene high surface area support). Hydrogen gas can be used to reduce the molecular weight and increase the bulk density and thermal stability of the polyketone product.
Abstract: Polymethylaluminoxane compositions having increased solution stability in organic solvent and, in some cases, increased polymerization activity, which comprise moieties derived from an organic compound containing an electron-rich heteroatom (e.g., from Group V and/or Group VI of the Periodic Table) and a hydrocarbyl moiety. These compositions can be formed by reaction of trimethylaluminum, the organic compound, and water. They can also be formed by reaction of pre-formed polymethylaluminoxane the organic compound, which can be a hydrocarbyl group-containing compound containing an electron-rich heteroatom (e.g., oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur), either with or without an active hydrogen atom connected to the heteroatom. The organic compound, in some embodiments, has also been found to be effective in increasing the catalytic activity of modified polymethylaluminoxane which, in addition to methyl, contain C.sub.2 and higher alkyl groups for enhanced solution stability.
