  • Patent number: 6530953
Abstract: An ocular replacement system provides a ball implant having an outer spherical surface that is receptive to ocular tissue ingrowth, including an anterior surface positioned forwardly within the eye cavity to create a semi-spherical shape covered by the conjunctiva. A prosthesis includes an inner concave surface shaped to conform generally to the anterior surface and to the conjunctiva covering the anterior surface of the implant. One or more first magnets or magnetically attractive elements fitted to and flush with the anterior surface of the implant are correspondingly positioned relative to one or more second magnets fitted to the inner concave surface of the prosthesis. In one embodiment, the poles of the first magnets are arranged to magnetically align with opposite poles of the second magnets, thereby providing an attractive force which magnetically couples the prosthesis to the implant.

  • Patent number: 6468052
Abstract: A safety device for use in a fluid transfer and/or circulation system of the type which uses a pump to draw water from a reservoir through one or more intake lines each extending from an open end at the reservoir to the pump intake. The safety device connects to the fluid transfer/circulation system and includes a sensor, a triggering mechanism, and a vacuum breaker. When the pump is operating, the sensor monitors one or more conditions of the system. When one or more of the monitored conditions deviates outside of a normal operational range, as a result of an obstruction of any one or more of the open ends of the intake lines, the triggering mechanism triggers the vacuum breaker to eliminate negative pressure in the system by introducing air from atmosphere into the intake lines, thereby removing suction at the open ends of the intake lines. The safety device may further activate warning devices including audible and visible alarms to indicate that the system has been deactivated.

  • Patent number: 6468178
Abstract: A rear wheel hub and chainless drive train gear assembly for use on a bicycle having an axle bracket fixed to the frame of the bicycle, a spindle extending axially through the axle bracket and left and right pedal crank arms for rotating the spindle upon application of a pedaling force. A primary drive gear fitted to the spindle drivingly engages carrier gears which operate a planet gear cage housing and a multiple planetary gear and sun gear arrangement according to various gear ratios determined by selective operation of a clutch assembly. Planetary gear groups each include an integral set of planetary gears of varying size which mesh with corresponding sun gear rings. Operation of the clutch assembly serves to selectively engage pawl stops with a corresponding sun gear ring, thereby engaging the corresponding sun gear ring with one of the planetary gears of the planetary gear groups according to a selected gear ratio.

  • Patent number: 6454091
Abstract: A storage case for protectively containing media discs, such as DVD's and CD's, provides a disc holder for releasably holding the media discs in the interior of the case between top and bottom hinged cover members. The disc holder includes a centrally disposed disc retainer having flexible fingers with barbed distal ends for engaging the upper surface of the media disc proximate a central opening thereof. Arm members extend between the fingers and a pair of diametrically opposed tabs, wherein application of a radially inward directed force to the tabs, using the thumb and one other finger of the same hand, serves to urge the fingers to a compressed position so that the barbed distal ends are freed from the disc.

  • Patent number: 6450041
Abstract: In a testing apparatus used to observe the effects of positive pressure and vacuum pressure on a test specimen, such as the effects resulting from forces created by wind, explosions and water, a clamp system is provided for holding the test specimen against the apparatus in a manner which creates an airtight cavity between the test apparatus and the specimen. The clamp system includes one or more rolling clamp assemblies which are selectively movable in relation to the test apparatus in order to accommodate a range of sizes of specimens to be clamped at various locations on the test apparatus. Each clamp assembly includes an elongate track formed by spaced, parallel rails supported on a rolling trolley. One or more clamp members slidably carried on the track each include a threaded rod extending between the rails and a pivoting foot on the distal end of the rod for engaging the specimen.

  • Patent number: 6439659
Abstract: A chair is provided with a corrosion resistant tubular frame structure including a left frame member, a right frame member and pivoting cross arms fitted to the left and right frame members and operable in a scissor action to permit lateral movement of the left and right frame members between a collapsed position and a separated operable. position. Flexible, weather-resistant material panels attached between the left and right frame members provide a seat base and back rest which are pulled taut to support a person seated in the chair when the frame members are separated in the operable, open position. Side pockets of varying size and shape are provided on overhanging flaps on opposite, outboard sides of the chair. The chair is further provided with integrated accessory holders including a cup holder, an umbrella holder, a fishing rod holder, and a shoulder strap to facilitate transport of the collapsed chair.

  • Patent number: 6440403
Abstract: A composition for application to fingernails and toe nails includes a binder and a pigment, the binder including volatile and non-volatile components and the pigment being present in the composition in an amount of between 25% to 35% of the total volume of the non-volatile portion of the composition, creating a physical action upon drying of a layer of the composition applied to the nails, wherein a lack of cohesive strength between the pigment and binder results in formation of random cracks in the applied layer.
