Abstract: The present invention is a method for the detoxification and/or chemical remediation of soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds. The process comprises treating the soil with the sodium and calcium salts of naphthalene sulfonates, lignosulfonates, their derivatives and mixtures thereof. The volatile organics are then forced from the soil as the soil is more attracted to the admixture than it is to the volatile organic contaminants.

Abstract: The gene encoding the ligninase rLDM.TM. 6 has been cloned and expressed. The ligninases produced via the processes disclosed herein are useful to degrade or modify lignin in pulp operations.

Abstract: An improved immunomodulatory therapy for enhancement of depressed host defense mechanisms as shown by improved allograft survival rates is disclosed. The therapy comprises the synergistic combination of an immunomodulatory diet consisting of an amino acid such as arginine, ornithine and their salts, a nucleotide such as RNA and fish oil as a source of omega-3-fatty acids together with an immunosuppressive treatment comprising the administration of a donor specific transfusion and cyclosporine.

Abstract: By reducing a sulphur dye (S) in aqueous medium with a reducing carbonyl compound in the presence of alkali metal hydroxide and optionally alkali metal (bi)sulphite at temperatures above 60.degree. C. and drying the reaction mixture, there are obtained very stable leuco sulphur dyes (L), which are practically free of sulphides and polysulphides, are readily and completely soluble in water and are usable for the dyeing of substrates dyeable with sulphur dyes, by which a disturbing development of H.sub.2 S or a disturbing inorganic sulphide occurrance in the waste water can be efficiently avoided; by spray-drying in a drying time <4 minutes as described there are obtained sulphide-free, stable leuco sulphur dyes (L) readily soluble in water and particularly suitable for sulphide-free dyeing, in particular for the dyeing of polyamidic fibrous substrates, especially of wool.

Abstract: Ascospores of wood-penetrating, pitch-grading fungi of the class of Ascomycotina and Deuteromycotina, eg. Ophiostromas, may be screened to provide fungi combining the properties of good growth on non-sterile wood substrates and minimized or even enhanced brightness effects for use in pitch reduction of wood substrates, eg. logs and wood chips. A new and improved method of isolating such ascospores involving effective suspension in an oil consumable by the fungus, eg. a vegetable oil, and then treatment of the oil with a dispersing agent is also disclosed.

Abstract: A process for modifying the slump of a concrete or mortar by the addition at different times of a water-soluble poly(alkylene oxide) and a .beta.-naphthalene sulphonate-formaldehyde condensate, a plasticizer or superplasticizer which is selected from lignosulphonates, melamine sulphonate formaldehyde condensates, carboxylates and selected styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers. The poly(alkylene oxide) is preferably partially replaced by a (hydroxy)alkyl cellulose. The process is advantageously used in shotcreting.

Abstract: An inhaler for administering powdered medicaments comprising a one-piece, elongate body that has an elongate magazine in a magazine passage extending through the elongate body. The elongate body also has an air inlet, a mouthpiece, and a capsule cutter. The elongate magazine has a plurality of capsule chambers defined in it and spaced along its length, each capsule chamber having an air inlet alignable with the air inlet to the elongate body and an air outlet alignable with the mouthpiece. The magazine is slidable step-wise along the magazine passage to align a capsule chamber with the air inlet to the elongate body, the mouthpiece and the capsule cutter. The capsule cutter, upon activation, pierces both ends of a capsule in the capsule chamber.
