  • Patent number: 6483118
Abstract: The present invention provides a positron source essentially consisting of a carbon member having 18F bound onto the surface thereof, a method of a preparing the same, and an automated system for supplying the same. In the present invention, the positron source is prepared by irradiating a solution 35 containing both H218O and a small amount of natural fluorine ions with a beam of charged particles to generate 18F, and then passing an electric current through the solution 35 using a carbon member 40 as an anode to cause to bind the generated 18F onto the surface of the carbon member 40.

  • Patent number: 6478339
Abstract: A piping joint for preventing pipe members laid across the connection end faces of two adjacent structural elements from being damaged by changes in the relative positional relationship between the two adjacent structural elements due to the expansion and contraction caused by changes in the temperature or external stresses. The piping joint connects the end portions of the two pipe members laid in two structural elements whose connection end faces can displace relatively to each other, between the connection end faces to make the two pipe members communicate. It comprises a fixed unit (30) fixedly embedded into the connection end face of one of the structural elements and a movable unit (50) supported by the fixed unit so as to be movable along the connection end face. The pipe member in the structural element is connected to the fixed unit, and the pipe member in the other structural element is connected to the movable element. The two pipe members communicate in the fixed unit.

  • Patent number: 6478887
Abstract: A boronized wear-resistant material that includes a boron-containing composition is disclosed. The boron-containing composition includes tungsten carbide and a compound represented by the formula W3MB3, where M is selected from the group consisting of iron, nickel, cobalt and alloys thereof. Particularly, a boride layer containing WC and W3CoB3 may be formed over a cemented tungsten carbide substrate by a suitable boronizing process. Additional compounds present in the boride layer include CoB, W2CoB2, and WB. A relatively thick and uniform boride layer may be obtained over a carbide substrate to form a wear-resistant body. Such a wear-resistant body may be used to manufacture cutting tools, drawing dies, inserts for an earth-boring bit, face seals, bearing surfaces, nozzles, and so on.

  • Patent number: 6480346
Abstract: In an lens holder, a lens 10 inserted in an insertion hole 2 is bonded and secured to a lens holder 1 by an adhesive agent poured in slots 4 formed in such a manner as to divide an outer wall portion 3. Since a sufficient amount of adhesive agent can be allowed to adhere to the lens, the lens can be fixed to the lens holder with sufficient strength. In addition, since the adhesive agent 20 poured in the slots 4 overflows also to the outer side of the slots of the lens holder 1, it is possible to reduce the amount of adhesive agent 20 flowing into the insertion hole 2 side, and it is possible to prevent the adhesive agent from adhering to the surface of the lens 20.

  • Patent number: 6475882
Abstract: A production method of a GaN-based compound semiconductor having excellent crystallinity and a GaN-based semiconductor device produced therefrom. A discrete SiN buffer body is formed on a substrate, and a GaN buffer layer is formed thereon at low temperatures and a GaN semiconductor layer is then formed at high temperatures. By forming the discrete SiN buffer body, the crystal growth, which is dependent on the substrate, of the low-temperature buffer layer is inhibited and monocrystallization is promoted to generate seed crystals used at the time of growing the GaN buffer layer. Further, by forming SiO2 discretely between the substrate and the SiN buffer body or by forming InGaN or a superlattice layer on the GaN semiconductor layer, distortion of the GaN semiconductor layer is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6474425
Abstract: A drill bit including a bit body and a plurality of blades formed in the bit body. The blades are formed, at least in part, from a base matrix material that on one embodiment is impregnated with abrasive particles. One side of the bit is formed, with respect to its axis of rotation, to a smaller radius than the opposite side of the bit. The asymmetry of the bit enables the bit to drill a larger diameter hole than a pass through diameter of the bit. The opposite side defines a contact angle between the bit and a formation. In one embodiment, the contact angle is at least 140 degrees. In one embodiment, a plurality of inserts may be located on the blades to provide gage protection. In another embodiment, the bit may also include a gage sleeve that helps keep the bit stabilized in the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 6474422
Abstract: A method for controlling a subsea well that includes shutting at least one blowout preventer, opening at least one isolation line, and circulating an influx out of a well while an inlet pressure of a subsea mudlift pump is adjusted to maintain a substantially constant drill pipe pressure at an initial circulating pressure. After the influx is circulated out of the well, drilling mud with a kill mud weight is pumped into the well. The drill pipe pressure is reduced according to a preselected drill pipe pressure decline schedule until the kill mud weight drilling mud reaches the bottom of the well. The drill pipe pressure is then maintained at a final circulating pressure by adjusting the inlet pressure of the subsea mudlift pump. The kill mud weight drilling mud is then circulated from the well bottom to the surface at the final circulating pressure.

  • Patent number: 6473883
Abstract: A method for improving integrated circuit by using a patterned bump layout on a layer of the integrated circuit is provided. The method creates various bump structures by varying an angle between a line from a reference bump to a first bump and a line from the reference bump to a second bump. By varying the angle, a designer may generate a particular bump structure that meets the needs of a particular design. Further, a particular bump placement may be repeated across all or a portion of the metal layer in order to create a patterned bump layout.

  • Patent number: 6464024
Abstract: A bi-center drill bit includes pilot and reaming blades affixed to a body at azimuthally spaced locations. The blades have PDC cutters attached at selected positions. In one aspect, the pilot blades form a section having length along the bit axis less than about 80 percent of a diameter of the section. In another aspect, selected pilot blades and corresponding reaming blades are formed into single spiral structures. In another aspect, shapes and positions of the blades and inserts are selected so that lateral forces exerted by the reaming and the pilot sections are balanced as a single structure. Lateral forces are preferably balanced to within 10 percent of the total axial force on the bit. In another aspect, the center of mass of the bit is located less than about 2.5 percent of the diameter of the bit from the axis of rotation. In another aspect, jets are disposed in the reaming section oriented so that their axes are within about 30 degrees of normal to the axis of the bit.

  • Patent number: 6461410
Abstract: A raw gas containing a gas component A with low affinity with an adsorbent and a gas component C with high affinity with the adsorbent are sequentially supplied to at least three adsorption columns, while a desorption gas containing a gas component D which differs from the gas components A and C is supplied to each of the adsorption columns other than the one to which the raw gas is being supplied. When the raw gas is supplied to the adsorption columns, the gas component A having lower affinity with the adsorbent exits the adsorption columns earlier than the gas component C having higher affinity. The gas components A and C can thus be separated from each other. When a gas including an enriched gas component A is discharged from the outlet of each adsorption column, the full amount is extracted out of the system. When a gas including an enriched gas component C is discharged from the outlet of each adsorption column, the full amount is extracted out of the system.
