Abstract: A novel on-line method is presented for the extraction and preconcentration of amino acids using a sol-gel coated column coupled to a conventional UV/vis detector. Extraction, stacking and focusing techniques are used in the preconcentration procedures. Sol-gel coatings are created by using N-Octadecyldimethyl[3(trimethoxysilyl)proply]ammonium chloride (C18-TMS) in the coating sol solutions. The resulting sol-gel coating carries a positive charge. For extraction, the pH of the samples is properly adjusted to impart a net negative charge to amino acids. A long plug of the sample is then passed through the sol-gel coated capillary to facilitate extraction via electrostatic interaction between the positively charged sol-gel coating and the negatively charged amino acid molecules. The focusing of the extracted amino acids is accomplished through desorption of the extracted amino acid molecules carried out by local pH change. The described procedure provides 150,000-fold enrichment effect for alanine.

Abstract: A partial ovoidal FAIMS apparatus for separating ions is presented with inner and outer electrodes that have geometrically matched convex and concave partial ovoidal surfaces, respectively, that share at least one common defining axis and display a nearly constant displacement between the opposing surfaces. The ovoidal surfaces can be that of an egg shaped ovoid, an ellipse, or a sphere. The apparatus can have at least one ion inlet and an ion outlet where the outlet is on or as near as possible to a point on the defining axis in the outer electrode and the inlet or inlets are on, near, or symmetrically disposed about the defining axis of the ovoidal surfaces. Electrical contacts to the electrodes permit the application of an asymmetric waveform and a compensation voltage to at least one of the electrodes. The electrodes are positioned, stabilized, and insulated from each other by a base plate.

Abstract: A semiconductor memory device is provided including: a spacer shaped floating gate formed on a semiconductor substrate; a dielectric layer spacer formed at one side wall of the floating gate; a third oxide layer formed over the floating gate and the dielectric layer; and a control gate formed over the third oxide layer. According to an embodiment, the structure of the floating gate in a plate shape whose center is concave is improved to the spacer structure, making it possible to minimize the size of the semiconductor memory device and to improve density. Moreover, a LOCOS process can be excluded while forming the floating gate, making it possible to more efficiently fabricate the device.
Abstract: Provided are an image sensor and a method for manufacturing the same. The image sensor comprises: a readout circuitry, an interconnection, a contact plug, and an image sensing device. The readout circuitry is formed in a first substrate. The interconnection is electrically connected to the readout circuitry over the first substrate. The contact plug is formed over the interconnection, and includes an insulating layer at regions in an upper side thereof. The image sensing device is formed over the contact plug.
Abstract: The present invention concerns methods for evaluating the emotional response to stimuli, such as marketing communications. The present invention includes a method for correlating an emotional response to brain imaging data, a method identifying an emotional response to a stimulus, and a system for identifying an emotional response to a stimulus. The present invention can incorporate a psychological non-verbal measure, such as AdSAM®, and a neural-physiological measure, functional brain imaging, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), or other functional brain imaging modality. For example, in marketing communication research, the emotional response data can be determined for such things as product concepts, advertising (concept and/or finished ads), product attributes, product benefits, brands, logos, tag lines, packaging, music, etc. The method of the invention can also be used to assess emotional response to different purchase options (e.g., retail vs.
Abstract: A plasma actuator incorporates a power source, a first electrode in contact with a first dielectric layer, a second electrode in contact with a second dielectric layer, and a ground electrode. The power source drives the first electrode with a first ac voltage pattern with respect to the ground electrode to produce a first plasma discharge, and a first electric field pattern in the flow region, and drives the second electrode with a second ac voltage pattern with respect to the ground electrode to produce a second plasma discharge in the flow region and a second electric field pattern in the flow region. The first and second electrodes are offset along the direction of flow and the first voltage pattern and the second voltage pattern have a phase difference such that the first and second electric fields drive flow in different portions of the flow region at different times.

Abstract: Manzamine compounds have been discovered to decrease cell dissociation and cell migration associated with the metastatic potential of cancer cells and a restoration of cancer cell susceptibility to agents, such as TRAIL, which can induce apoptosis. Specifically, Manzamine A has a formerly unrecognized utility in both blocking tumor cell invasion and tumor metastasis as well in restoring cancer cell susceptibility to standard chemotherapeutic agents which induce apoptosis and, therefore, has utility in treating cancer.
