  • Patent number: 4383443
Abstract: A liquid-level measuring device including, in effect, two similar elongate members each adapted to be partially submerged in a liquid, the two elongate members being displaced lengthwise relative to one another by an odd number of quarter wavelengths of a predetermined wavelength of a chosen flexurally resonant mode of the elongate members. Each elongate member has flexure wave transmitting elements in contact therewith for launching flexure waves along the member and flexure wave receiving elements in contact with the member for receiving flexure waves launched by the transmitting elements. Also, associated with each elongate member is a phase detection arrangement connected both to the transmitting elements and to the receiving elements for detecting and comparing the phase of the flexure waves at the transmitting elements with the phase at the receiving elements so as to obtain a phase difference measurement, the magnitude of which provides an indication of the resonance frequency of the elongate member.

  • Patent number: 4383158
Abstract: A cooking oven in which a ceramic gas sensor is disposed in an exhaust guide which guides air from within the oven chamber toward the exterior of the oven casing. The surface temperature of the ceramic gas sensor is changed to change the sensing characteristic of the sensor, so that the single sensor can sense both water vapor and soot given off from food being cooked. A voltage source including a stabilized direct current voltage source and a non-stabilized or alternating current voltage source is provided for supplying power to the ceramic gas sensor. In the soot sensing mode, the surface of the ceramic gas sensor is heated by the power supplied from the stabilized direct current voltage source to stabilize the soot sensing characteristic of the sensor. An electronic circuit controlling the cooking operation includes a plurality of amplifiers having different gains which are suitably selected to deal with the humidity sensing mode and the soot sensing mode.

  • Patent number: 4380854
Abstract: An apparatus for assembling cooling tubes and fin elements in the manufacture of heat exchangers, particularly radiators for motor vehicles, comprises stations for feeding the tubes and the fin elements to grooves in a rotatable drum. A tube and a fin element are positioned together in each groove in the drum and are then ejected together at an ejecting station by an expelling device. An advancing means advances the tube and the fin element along a transportation path in an alternate relationship. The tubes and the fin element are soldered to form units during their passage through a soldering station. In a preferred embodiment the feeding station for the fin elements is provided with a separate groove into which the fin elements are fed, before the transfer to the grooved drum.

  • Patent number: 4380821
Abstract: The present invention comprises a method of transmitting information from a central ground station to at least one mobile auxiliary ground station via at least one base station. The auxiliary ground stations are located within the transmitting range of at least one base station, and are provided with a receiving device having a control unit and a memory. In accordance with this method, a block of messages cyclically repeated within a time frame is transmitted over a single frequency from the central ground station to the base stations. Each of the messages within the block includes an address code which corresponds to the area code of the region adjacent a corresponding base station. The base stations transmit the block of messages over a single frequency to receiving devices located in the mobile auxiliary ground stations where those messages corresponding to a selected area code are recorded and then played back.

  • Patent number: 4379729
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the production of a composite sheet material and a material produced thereby are described, a typical product being a lightweight permanent or temporary formwork sheet of accurate thickness and parallelism made from material including glass fiber reinforced cement. A base or mould is moved through successive stations at which uncured but curable material is deposited in layers thereon. At least the final layer is consolidated by a local surface treatment with a vibratory screeder, the influence of which spreads through the material to promote intimate bonding together of the uncured layers. In a preferred form, the material comprises three layers, the first and third being of glass fiber reinforced cement and the central second layer being of cementitious material including a lightweight aggregate such as hollow microspheres.

  • Patent number: 4379423
Abstract: A hydraulic amplifier having a housing provided with pressure and return conduits, an amplifier piston, and a control slide. The piston is slidably arranged in an axial bore of the housing and itself has a blind axial bore within which the control slide is arranged. The piston and slide together constitute a unit which is free of pressure equalization and which is provided with two sets of passages for selectively placing the face of the piston in communication with the pressure and return conduits, respectively, depending on the axial position of the slide in the blind bore of the piston. The passages are asymmetrical with respect to the peripheral surface of the slide and are so constructed and arranged that whichever set of passages is closed, the slide is pressed radially against the closed passage under the influence of certain pressure differences which prevail in the hydraulic amplifier.
