  • Patent number: 4172446
Abstract: Apparatus for collecting body fluids at an internal cavity of the body of a living being. An enclosure is introduced into a body cavity with the enclosure in a contracted or evacuated condition. The enclosure has structure permitting body fluid to enter into the enclosure but not to flow out of the latter. A suitable triggering structure is provided to respond to the presence of a body fluid in order to trigger the release of the enclosure for collection, whereupon the enclosure sucks body fluid into the interior of the enclosure, with the enclosure having a structure such as a one-way valve which provides conditions permitting the fluid to flow into the enclosure but not to flow out of the latter. Thereafter, the enclosure is removed from the body cavity so that information can be obtained with respect to the fluid which is collected in the enclosure. The enclosure preferably contains an additive for providing a predetermined desired result with respect to a collected body fluid.

  • Patent number: 4172759
Abstract: In a paper-manufacturing machine a web is subjected to suction by placing a space between the web and a suction roll lapped thereby in communication with a region of substantially less than atmospheric pressure which is maintained at a part of the suction roll which is not lapped by the web. The structure includes a jacket which defines with the part of the suction roll which is not lapped by the web a hollow region with which a source of suction communicates. This hollow region of less than atmospheric pressure is situated at the exterior of the suction roll and bounded in part by an exterior surface of the suction roll, so that the hollow interior of the shell of the suction roll need not necessarily be utilized for providing the suction at the web.

  • Patent number: 4171731
Abstract: A land vehicle such as a motorcycle has a frame and seat which, when the seat is in a normal operating position, define between themselves a space which is substantially closed and substantially inaccessible. A structure which includes components such as electronic components is situated in this latter space so as to be protected from the outer atmosphere and from unauthorized access when the seat is in its normal operating position. By way of a suitable connecting structure the seat can be displaced from its normal operating position to a location where the seat is at least partially spaced from the frame to give access to the space where the structure which includes electronic components or the like is situated, so that access may be had to the structure for servicing or the like.

  • Patent number: 4169757
Abstract: An apparatus for damping pressure fluctuations in the pulp-suspension flow of a paper machine includes a pipe system which delivers the pulp suspension to a headbox and in the interior of which the pulp suspension flows toward the headbox. A portion of the pipe system is surrounded by a gas, such as air, which is under pressure and which is situated within a suitable enclosure. This portion of the pipe system is formed at least in part by an elastic wall structure, the inner surface of which engages the pulp-suspension flow and the outer surface of which is exposed to the gas under pressure. Thus, the elastic wall structure changes its configuration or geometry due to pressure fluctuations in the pulp-suspension flow while the gas under pressure which acts through the elastic wall structure on the pulp suspension serves to damp the pressure fluctuations.

  • Patent number: 4167186
Abstract: A syringe, particularly a vaginal douche, has a cannula consisting of an elongated hollow tubular body having one open end and an opposed transverse end wall formed with an opening through which a central axis of the cannula body extends. The cannula body has substantially midway between its ends a transverse minimum cross section while tapering only slightly from the transverse end wall toward the minimum cross section. Between its open end and its minimum cross section the cannula body tapers to a substantially greater degree and has the configuration of part of a hollow cone. At its exterior between its minimum cross section and transverse end wall the cannula body is formed with grooves uniformly distributed about the central axis of the cannula body and separated from each other by ribs. Adjacent but inwardly of these ribs the cannula body is formed with additional openings passing therethrough so that a liquid can discharge through the cannula openings.

  • Patent number: 4166575
Abstract: A system for supplying hot and cold water to a mixing valve includes hot and cold water conduits which extend in the same general direction and which are situated adjacent each other for respectively supplying hot and cold water to a mixing valve. A slide valve extends across and intersects both of these conduits to regulate the flow of water therethrough. The slide valve automatically assumes under given pressure and temperature conditions of the water in the hot and cold water conduits a given position with respect thereto, and the slide valve is capable of automatically responding to a change in the pressure conditions for automatically moving with respect to the hot and cold water conduits in a direction which tends to eliminate this change.

  • Patent number: 4166759
Abstract: A headbox of a paper machine includes a header chamber for receiving pulp stock, a distribution pipe system for receiving pulp stock from the header chamber, a flow-equalizing chamber for receiving pulp stock from the distribution pipe system, a turbulence passage system for receiving pulp stock from the flow-equalizing chamber, and a lip slice for receiving pulp stock from the turbulence passage system and discharging the pulp stock from the headbox. At least one of the above chambers is defined in part by a movable wall structure which has an inner surface contacting the pulp stock so that this movable wall structure can move in response to pressure fluctuations in the pulp stock. This wall structure has an outer surface which defines part of the hollow interior of an enclosure in which air under pressure is situated, so that through the movable wall structure the air under pressure can act on the pulp stock to damp pressure fluctuations thereof.
