  • Patent number: 4183394
Abstract: A method and apparatus for horizontal continuous casting of metal alloys, such as brass, which tend to have a component thereof separate therefrom, in vapor form, during and immediately after solidification of the metal. The molten metal alloy progresses from the entrance end toward the discharge end of a horizontal tubular mold, with the metal solidifying at least next to the inner surface of the mold before reaching the discharge end thereof. The solidified metal in the mold shrinks inwardly away from the mold surface to form a shrinkage gap therewith, so that the above component of the alloy in vapor form enters into this shrinkage gap. In accordance with the invention this shrinkage gap is maintained filled with a gas which is inert to the above vapor so that the latter cannot oxidize in the shrinkage gap. In this way it is possible to avoid formation of undesirable deposits at the inner surface of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4181452
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of assembling and installing a device for exploiting an oil-field. Said device comprises an upper structure comprising two superposed platforms provided with a vertically slidable column, and a lower structure comprising at least two tanks connected to the upper structure by means of support legs. Such a device allows its elements i.e. each of the platforms and the tanks to be fabricated separately, and the assembly to be performed only in floating conditions and not in a dry dock. Furthermore the fabrication can therefore take place in a yard designed for constructions of small size compared with that of the completely assembled device.

  • Patent number: 4180402
Abstract: A process for obtaining a half-tone picture of irregular structure consists in exposing a coarse-grained silver-halide material with an average linear size of silver halide micro-crystals of 4 to 6 microns, developing the exposed material in an infectious developer, printing the resulting picture on a high-contract photosensitive material, and developing the exposed high-contract photosensitive material. The process permits obtaining a high-quality half-tone picture with the optical densities of the original being reproducible within the range of more than 1.0. The process is simple and easily controllable.

  • Patent number: 4179487
Abstract: The contact apparatus comprises a perforated base provided with at least one liquid overflow device, and two baffles, the ports of the base being for gas (steam) to pass. The overflow device is in fact two coaxial shells of which the top (as along the flow of liquid) partly encloses the bottom one, and is made up by two shell pieces interconnected by a guide member. The bottom shell piece has smaller flow passage area than the top one. The lower edge of the guide member is located above the upper end of the bottom shell. Each of the baffles is situated under the shell so to make a certain clearance with the lower end of the respective shell. The present invention can find utility when applied in fractionating and absorption columns for processes proceeding under heavy loads in terms of liquid processed, e.g., for purifying converted gas from carbon monoxide and dioxide by various absorbents, as well as for processes for absorbing nitrogen oxides with water in producing weak nitric acid.

  • Patent number: 4179332
Abstract: Apparatus for damping pressure and consistency perturbations occurring in the pulp suspension flow to the headbox of a paper making machine including an enclosed damping tank defining therewithin a space for a volume of air and a space for the pulp suspension such that the pulp suspension and the air volume have direct interfacing contact. Longitudinally extending distribution and collecting header means are disposed within the tank for conducting the flow of pulp suspension into and out of the tank, respectively. Each of the distribution and collecting header means define a flow passage for the pulp suspension, which passages fluidly communicate with the pulp suspension space within the damping tank through an elongate, continuous slit. Damping or attenuation of the pressure perturbations in the pulp stock flow is achieved through the interaction of the surface of the pulp stock with the air volume while the consistency perturbations are damped through the action of a plural delay principle.

  • Patent number: 4178696
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mixing a first relatively cool gas current and a second relatively hot gas current in a manner such that the resulting gas current has a relatively uniform temperature immediately subsequent to the point of mixing. The first gas current is separated into first and second partial gas currents, the first partial gas current being directed to a conduit which branches from the conduit in which the second partial gas current is directed. The first partial gas current is directed at a relatively high velocity into a central nozzle in fluid communication with the second gas current while the second partial gas current is directed into a ring nozzle which also is in fluid communication with the second gas current and which concentrically surrounds the central nozzle. The flow of the first gas current is regulated by throttling the second partial gas current while maintaining the flow of the first partial gas current.

  • Patent number: 4176952
Abstract: Disclosure is made of a photoelectric pyrometer for measuring the temperature of bodies of small cross-sectional dimensions which vary with respect to the optical axis of the pyrometer. The pyrometer comprises, in successive arrangement, an objective, a stationary field diaphragm, a slit obturator, an aperture diaphragm, a condenser sighted at the aperture of the stationary field diaphragm, and a photoelectric converter arranged in the sharp image plane of the condenser. The light-sensitive surface of the photoelectric converter receives two trains of light pulses. One of these pulse trains is formed by the above-mentioned units, whereas the other is formed by the obturator arranged across the path of a luminous flux generated by an optical feedback radiation source. The photoelectric converter produces two trains of trapezoidal electric pulses of a variable duration and on-off ratio.

  • Patent number: 4175594
Abstract: The apparatus relates to travelling-wave looms, wherein weft thread carriers are conveyed along a closed trajectory of the type disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,835,893. The apparatus includes a rotatable disk carrying rotatable winding members, lower grips for the end of the weft thread, a package holder and upper grips for the weft thread. Above the disk, beneath the upper grip for the weft thread, a mechanism for conveying the weft thread in a direction opposite to the downward movement thereof in the process of threading is mounted. This mechanism comprises a rod located in the zone wherein the carriers initially encounter the winding members. The weft thread is conveyed upwardly through the disk when a length of the thread defined between the upper grip and the thread guide provided in the disk encounters the rod during coordinated rotation of the disk with the weft thread carriers.
