  • Patent number: 4192713
Abstract: A paper machine press section has an intermediate press nip defined between a pair of press rolls, a web conveying fabric in the form of a suitable felt or wire travelling between these press rolls together with a web carried thereby while engaging one of the press rolls. An endless fabric means in the form of a suitable felt or wire laps the other press roll to travel also through the intermediate press nip while engaging the web at the side thereof which is directed away from the web-conveying fabric. Thus, while travelling through the intermediate press nip, the web is compressed between the above fabrics. Immediately subsequent to the intermediate press nip, the web-conveying fabric together with the web conveyed thereby lap the press roll which engages the web-conveying fabric through an angle which is at least 5.degree. and which preferably is in a range of approximately 7.degree.-30.degree..

  • Patent number: 4192752
Abstract: A continuous decantation clarifier, wherein liquid to be clarified flows slowly and homogeneously into the interior of the clarifier, includes a first zone through which the liquid initially passes while the liquid is subjected to homogenization and flocculation, this first zone being penetrated in a substantially vertical descending direction by a second zone where the direction of liquid flow is reversed so that the liquid moves in an ascending vertical direction through flakes and solids in suspension in the liquid. In this latter zone such flakes and solids precipitate toward the bottom of the clarifier. The latter having a third zone wherein liquid commences to flow radially in an outward substantially horizontal direction, across frustoconical surfaces or trays, in which the decantation is concluded, the clarified liquid being collected close to the outer peripheries of the trays.

  • Patent number: 4192711
Abstract: A paper-manufacturing machine and method include the feature of detaching a web from a forming wire by utilizing a stationary transfer suction box past which a felt travels while contacting the web so that the latter becomes detached from the forming wire and adheres to the felt while travelling with the latter beyond the forming wire. The felt and web are lapped through a substantial angle around a roll having a recessed surface whiletravelling toward the first press nip of a press section, and at this roll around which the felt and web are lapped a means is provided for directing steam toward the web and through the latter and the felt inwardly toward the recessed surface of the guide roll so that the flowing steam will on the one hand heat water carried by the web to enhance dewatering of the web at the first press nip while on the other hand the steam will serve to maintain the web reliably in engagement with the felt as the latter travels toward the first press nip.

  • Patent number: 4190946
Abstract: A process for the fabrication of a metal electrode having a vertical axis, composed of segments of two or more metal alloys of differing chemical compositions, these segments having masses and dimensions such that, after being joined to each other by various processes following an appropriately determined curve and junction surface, produce, after remelting by the Electroslag process, an ingot with a chemical composition which varies continuously along its axis, each chemical element varying in concentration along the axis according to a predetermined or arbitrarily selected equation. The ingot may be subjected to upset forging, metal blocks, slabs, flats, and plates and strips being obtained having chemical compositions which vary continuously along their thickness. By initially subjecting the obtained ingot to drawing with forging and/or rolling, bars, contour forgings and rings, with chemical composition varying continuously along their longitudinal axis, are obtained.

  • Patent number: 4186730
Abstract: A method for collecting fluids present at the body of a human being or animal. An enclosure is temporarily situated at a cavity of the body, this enclosure having within itself a hollow interior for receiving a body fluid while shielding the body from the interior of the enclosure and while a part of the enclosure is situated at the body cavity in proximity to a location where a body fluid which is to be collected is situated. The enclosure carries a transfer structure which creates between the interior of the enclosure and the above location of the body fluid conditions for only inward transfer of the body fluid from this latter location into the interior of the enclosure, the inward transfer conditions being maintained effective during at least part of the time while the enclosure remains at the body cavity. Thereafter, when the enclosure is separated from the body cavity, the desired body fluid will be situated in the interior of the enclosure.
