Abstract: A treatment for enhancing the recovery of exopolysaccharide from bacterial cells is disclosed, which treatment includes adding to a cultivation medium containing said cells an amount, effective for the purpose of an alkylsulfosuccinate surfactant.
Abstract: A method for removing corrosive inorganic cations--such as calcium magnesium cations--from a crude oil stream by mixing the stream with a softened brine wash water that has been softened by removal or replacement of precipitating divalent or trivalent cations with non-precipitating cations. The crude oil stream and the wash water are mixed at a temperature from about 98.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. to form an emulsion wherein the corrosive inorganic cations are transferred from the crude oil to the wash water, The emulsion is then broken to form a crude oil fraction and an aqueous fraction containing at least a portion of the corrosive inorganic cations from the crude oil. This method is particularly useful in areas where freshwater is not readily available.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cleaning the interior of the storage tanks of the type used for storing large volumes of liquids, such as crude oil, wherein hydrocarbon sludge accumulates with the passage of time, such apparatus comprising concentric hallow pipes, a spray nozzle for injecting a flushing fluid, and connecting means including a packing gland which allows the concentric pipes to be movably oriented inside a storage tank through a manway. With this construction, a flushing fluid can be sprayed into a sludge layer in the storage tank through the inner pipe and sludge/flushing fluid withdrawn through the annular region between the concentric pipes. The packing gland in the connecting means, and a second packing gland between the inner and outer pipes allows for independent movement of the pipes within the storage tank.
Abstract: A method of stabilizing aqueous system solubility of a transition metal salt, polymeric agent corrosion/deposition control combination at neutral pH is disclosed. The addition of an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid to such corrosion/deposition control combinations was found to enhance corrosion/deposition inhibition while providing for a stabile combination at neutral pH.

Abstract: Apparatus for recovering floating hard-body tube cleaning elements from cooling water downstream of a heat exchanger. The floating hard-body tube cleaning elements are removed from the water flowing through a cooling tower distribution header and recovery from a modified distribution header vent.
Abstract: Non-halogen substituted, nitrogen containing, aromatic compounds are disclosed which are effective copper corrosion inhibitors in aqueous systems being treated with a halogen biocide. The materials of the present invention exhibit copper corrosion inhibition comparable to tolyltriazole in the absence of halogen, copper corrosion rates of less than about 2.5 mills per year in aqueous systems where halogen is present; and do not exhibit a detrimental effect on halogen demand in an aqueous system being treated.
Abstract: Methods and compositions for improving the extraction of phenols from crude styrene using an aqueous caustic solution are disclosed. It has been discovered that aromatic or alkylammonium tailed multi-polyether headed surfactants and/or quaternary polyamines will improve this extraction, particularly in propylene oxide styrene monomer systems.
Abstract: In the manufacture of iron in which coke and coal are added to a blast furnace during iron manufacture, an improvement for enhancing the operation of the furnace is disclosed. A metallic element in the form of a compound thereof, the metallic element selected from zirconium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, aluminum, tin and lead is added to the coal, allowing for a reduction in the amount of coke added to the furnace.

Abstract: A foam generating apparatus and system for generating high quality foam suitable for dust control is disclosed. The apparatus is an eductor that makes use of the energy of a high pressure stream of aqueous foaming solution to draw air into the foaming solution and force it through a foam generator. A dust control foam system is described which employs such air eductors. The described foaming system requires only a single pressurized line to supply foaming solution obviating the need for a compressed air line.
