  • Patent number: 8219436
Abstract: A system and method for creating, scheduling, and managing time slots for installation appointments. Embodiments of the present invention permit a trading partner to offer a customer the ability to schedule installation of cable services on-line. A cable operator maintains an inventory of time slots. One or more time slots from the time slot inventory are offered to a customer based on ordering information received from the customer. A customer selects a time slot from the one or more offered time slots. A cable operator then assigns an installation appointment to the customer within the time slot selected by the customer. A cable operator may also determine the status of the inventory of time slots (e.g., time slots allocated, time slots consumed, and time slots available) for a system, a location, or a trading partner.

  • Patent number: 8204354
Abstract: A system and method for controlling a digital video recorder on a cable network. Signaling associated with the answering or initiation of a digital telephone call by a digital telephone subscriber is used to issue commands to a digital video recorder (DVR). A signal is generated by an MTA when the telephone is enters an “off-hook” state and sent to the DVR to initiate recording of a program being viewed by the called party. When the phone goes “on-hook”, the called party resumes watching the program from exactly where it was interrupted. The MTA may be connected directly to the VTD/DVR and the telephone state is determined by the DVR from information provided by the MTA. Alternatively, a soft switch monitors signaling from the MTA indicative of the state of the called telephone. A telephone state message comprising the telephone state information is then sent over an out-of-band channel/path to a DVR client within the VTD. The DVR client uses the telephone state information to control a DVR.

  • Patent number: 8202244
Abstract: A remotely controlled insertion system for a medical device is described. The system comprises a robotic device and a remote control mechanism. The robotic device has a handle controller to receive and hold the control handle or proximal end of a medical device. The medical device is capable of moving in up to six ranges of motion. In one embodiment a first motor is connected through a drive screw to a handle controller to move the medical device forward and backward. A second motor is connected to drive wheels effective to rotate the medical device clockwise and counter-clockwise. A third motor drives a series of gears that are connected to one or more control members on the medical device, this being effective to deflect a tip of the medical device so that movement of the third motor causes such deflection. A control unit is connected to all three motors.

  • Patent number: 8200519
Abstract: A system and method for optimizing the architecture of a service territory in a service enterprise. A management area has a fixed service call capacity to provide maintenance services to a subscriber base of the service enterprise. The cost of servicing the subscribers within the management area is measured by computing the driving cost and the restocking costs over a range of 1 to n service facilities using probability analysis. The optimal number of service facilities is determined by finding the lowest aggregate cost of servicing the subscribers over a range of 1 to “n” service facilities.

  • Patent number: 8194922
Abstract: Distributed adaptive geopositioning includes an objective architecture for imagery geopositioning. The positioning is distributed to fulfill the need to perform accurate geopositioning whenever and wherever it is needed. The positioning is adaptive to implement the idea that geopositioning is a dynamic, not static, quality of geospatial intelligence, for which accuracy can be improved over time as more data is collected and ingested. Focus is placed on the need for improved geopositioning throughout all areas of geospatial intelligence exploitation, not just for specific products or tools. Legacy data is re-computed to align with the geopositioned imagery and also benefits from improved accuracy.

  • Patent number: 8190964
Abstract: A method for decoding forward error correction (FEC) encoded data. A stream of units of FEC encoded bits are received, where the units are derived from a transmitted signal, where each unit represents a one-bit data value, and where each unit includes correctness bits. Preferably, the stream of units of FEC encoded bits are decoded by using the quality level of bits to perform soft-decision convolution decoding on the stream of units of FEC bits, where the soft-decision convolution decoding produces, for block decoding, a stream of symbols made up of bits. Subsequences of units that are prone to erroneous soft-decision convolution decoding are detected by determining, for the sub-sequences whether the distribution of quality bits indicate the units are below a threshold level of correctness, and by comparing characteristics of that distribution to a given set of characteristics predetermined to be prone to result in incorrect decoding.
