  • Patent number: 4137004
Abstract: A method for controlling operations of hydraulic machines, in which two or more hydraulic machines are positioned in water conduits separated or branched upstream thereof with the branch water conduits downstream therefrom being joined together or maintained separate. Thus, these hydraulic machines are communicated with each other through the branch water conduits. In this method, the lower limit of a closing operational speed of guide vanes in one hydraulic machine is preferentially or overridingly controlled in the transient phase of operation, by detecting the closing operational speed of guide vanes of the other hydraulic machines. As a result, an abnormal condition in hydraulic pressure in upstream or downstream water conduits may be prevented, which condition would be caused in the event that the operational conditions of respective hydraulic machines are abruptly changed one after another.

  • Patent number: 4136959
Abstract: A three ingredient mixture is eradiated with light rays of two separate wave lengths selected at which the absorption spectra of at least two of the materials of the mixture intersect. The light rays passing through the materials are detected and separated electrically so that they are processed with coefficients determined from ratios involving the absorption of at least two of the materials, so that the difference in the signals so obtained is quantitatively correlated to only one of the materials in the mixture.

  • Patent number: 4137161
Abstract: A detecting device is disposed between a separation column to which an eluent is supplied and a flow passage resisting member is located in a flow passage leading to a liquid discharge exit. This detecting device includes a sample cell and a reference cell. The effluent from the separation column is introduced into the flow passage resisting member through the sample cell. A change-over valve is disposed in the flow passage between the separation column and the sample cell and also is connected to one end of the reference cell. The other end of the reference cell is connected to the flow passage between the sample cell and the flow passage resisting member, whereby the reference cell and sample cell are kept communicated with each other. After an eluent has been filled in the reference cell, the communication of the flow passage between the separation column and the sample cell with the reference cell is intercepted by the change-over valve.

  • Patent number: 4137158
Abstract: A process for the tertiary treatment of biochemical waste waters comprising the following 4 main steps; (1) adding milk of lime to waste water from the anaerobic digestion treatment process to render the waste water alkaline and recovering NH.sub.3 by reduced pressure distillation, (2) contacting recovered NH.sub.3 with a weakly acidic ion exchange resin to make NH.sub.3 adsorbed in the ion exchanger resin, (3) adding acid to the adsorbed ammonia to form an ammonia salt, and (4) blowing CO.sub.2 into the treated water from which NH.sub.3 has been removed, to thereby recover P, and subjecting the treated water from which N and P have been removed to the activated sludge treatment to remove BOD.

  • Patent number: 4136917
Abstract: A housing made of insulating material has a plurality of slots each accommodating a contact spring including a pair of legs. The free ends of each leg are formed as contact noses facing each other. The contact noses define an opening through which an edge of a printed circuit board may be inserted with the board held at an angle with respect to its final position. The printed circuit board is then rotated about an axis parallel to the edge into its final position in which it is locked by a pair of resilient detent tongues formed at the ends of the housing. In this final position, conductor strips provided at the inserted edge of the printed circuit board make electrical contact with the noses of the contact springs. During rotation of the circuit board, minute sliding movements occur at the contact locations providing a cleaning effect on the contacts without causing excessive wear thereof.

  • Patent number: 3964385
Abstract: For screen printing, the screen is manufactured and used for printing in a single box. The screen material is coated with a delayed light sensitive emulsion, dried and assembled with a film opaque positive on the outer surface of a glass plate forming one side of the box for exposure to a flood light within the box, with the emulsion delay permitting assembly in normal environment light; the screen may be held down by a resilient foam layer, rigid plate and U-shaped member adjustably secured to the box for this purpose and further to serve as a carrying handle. Thereafter the exposed screen is washed and placed adjacent the outlet of a blower inside the box for the purposes of drying (the emulsion is originally dried in the same manner).

  • Patent number: 3964588
Abstract: Conveyors, having associated therewith means to divert loads from the normal line of travel, have means thereon to reduce the drag of the loads on the conveyor elements at the point of diversion. A diverter element is sometimes positioned adjacent the path of travel of a load and is provided with antifriction means on its face to reduce the friction of the load in changing its direction of travel. Antifriction means is provided on conveyor elements, either in the surface of a belt conveyor, or in the peripheral surface of conveyor rollers, which means is so arranged that it tends to cause a load to partake of motion in two directions at an angle to each other, the resultant of which is a path substantially normal to the line of travel on the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 3960463
Abstract: In a starting operation of a pump or a pump turbine with high head and large capacity, adjustable guide vanes are fully closed and compressed air is introduced within the runner casing to depress water around the runner. When the runner begins to rotate at a synchroous speed, the guide vanes are excessively opened to an over opening position where no reverse flow of the discharge flow occurs. After the stream of the discharge flow becomes steady, the guide vanes are moved conversely to a predetermined opening position where the maximum flow rate of the pump is obtained with low noise and low vibration. The present invention relates to a starting operation for a pump or a pump turbine with adjustable guide vanes circumferencially arranged around the runner, and more particularly to a starting operation for a pump or a pump turbine which is operated by controlling the opening of the adjustable guide vanes.

  • Patent number: 3947684
Abstract: In the isocount scintiscanning, the detector probe is scanned over the object plane such that it is stopped at each observation point during the time T necessary for the input pulses to reach a preset value N. The count rate R = N/T is then calculated electronically and the two-dimensional array of said count rate R.sub.i,j, output of said isocount scanner, is read in the memory of the display system, which is the subject to the present patent. These data are read out from said memory in synchronism with the television horizontal sweep signal; each value of count rate R.sub.i,j is compared to a reference slice level a.sub.k and if R.sub.i,j .gtoreq.a.sub.k, black is assigned to the corresponding picture element on the screen; if R.sub.i,j <a.sub.k, white is assigned to the corresponding element on the screen. If said slice level a.sub.

  • Patent number: 3946583
Abstract: In a weld for two metals having adjacent surfaces with a welded zone having deposited weld metal and an unwelded zone with a stress concentration between the two zones that would normally drastically decrease the fatigue strength, the fatigue strength is greatly improved by applying a preliminary load on the welds zone by the application of a fluid pressure between the unwelded adjacent surfaces to directly stress the stress concentration transition area. Preferably, the stress intensity factor for the fluid pressure at the stress concentration zone will be higher than the combined tensile and flexural stress intensity factors so that there will be localized yielding at the stress concentration area without damaging the remainder of the weld. The metal and/or fluid is heated to avoid fracture and further to vaporize any liquid remaining once the fluid pressure is removed.

  • Patent number: 3939039
Abstract: A nuclear reactor with a reactor core having a plurality of individual core elements is provided with a clamping device for at least some of the core elements, which clamping device includes a plurality of pawls pivotally mounted to the interior of each wall of the hexagonal outer wrapping tube for movement between a position within the wrapper tube and a position extending through an adjacent hole in the side wall of the wrapper tube, and an operating tube axially slidably mounted within the wrapper tube for moving the pawls between their two positions. When the pawls are extended by the operating tube, they will move outwardly a predetermined distance transversely of the core element to cooperatively engage other core elements and clamp the assembly. A lock mechanism is provided to lock the operating tube and wrapper tube in one position of the pawls, preferably the withdrawn position, to assist in inserting and removing the core element.
