Patent number: 7480280Abstract: A subscriber access unit includes a transceiver for providing wireless communication of digital signals. The digital signals are communicated to a base station using at least one radio frequency (RF) channel via Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) modulated radio signals. Subchannels are made available by the base station within each CDMA RF channel. A bandwidth manager is connected to the transceiver, and is allocated available subchannels by the base station on an as-needed basis, with a number of allocated subchannels changing during a given session. The transceiver, when powered on but not actively sending data, provides an idling mode connection on a reverse link to the base station. The idling mode connection enables subchannels to be reallocated without reestablishing a bit synchronization with the base station.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2005Date of Patent: January 20, 2009Assignee: Tantivy Communications, Inc.Inventor: James A. Patent number: 7437177Abstract: A base station for controlling transmission power during the establishment of a communication channel utilizes the reception of a short code during initial power ramp-up. The short code is a sequence for detection by the base station which has a much shorter period than a conventional access code. The ramp-up starts from a power level that is lower than the required power level for detection by the base station. The power of the short code is quickly increased until the signal is detected by the base station. Once the base station detects the short code, it transmits an indication that the short code has been detected.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2008Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: InterDigital Communications Corp.Inventors: Fatih Ozluturk, Gary R. Patent number: 7356071Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and apparatus for estimating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based on dedicated physical channel (DPCH) pilot symbols in a wireless communication system. A receiver receives a DPCH transmission and a despreader despreads the received DPCH transmission. A selector selects pilot symbols in the despread DPCH transmission. A signal power estimator estimates signal power based on the pilot symbols, and a noise power estimator estimates noise power based on the received DPCH transmission. A SNR estimator estimates an SNR based on the signal power estimation and the noise power estimation. The noise power estimator may calculate the noise power estimation either based only on pilot symbols or based on both pilot symbols and non-pilot symbols. The DPCH transmission may be transmitted using more than one antenna for transmit diversity.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2005Date of Patent: April 8, 2008Assignee: InterDigital Technology CorporationInventors: Bin Li, Rui Yang, Gregory S. Patent number: 7268738Abstract: An active antenna element to transmit and/or receive RF (Radio Frequency) signals is positioned in relation to a backplane that reflects RF signals. One or more passive antenna elements can be disposed on a similar side of the backplane as the active antenna element. Settings of the one or more passive antenna elements are adjusted to produce an input/output beam pattern that varies depending on whether the at least one passive antenna element is reflective or transmissive. Based on this technique, an RF input output beam pattern of an antenna assembly including the backplane, active antenna element and passive antenna elements can be controlled for better reception and transmission of RF signals.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2006Date of Patent: September 11, 2007Assignee: IPR Licensing, Inc.Inventors: Griffin K. Patent number: 7266168Abstract: A plurality of data signals are received over an antenna array having a plurality of antenna elements. The data signals are transmitted over a shared spectrum in a wireless communication system. A signal having each of the data signals is received over each antenna element. The plurality of data signals are grouped into a plurality of groups. The received signals of the antenna elements are matched filtered for a first group of the plurality of groups, producing a matched filtered result. Data is jointly detected of the first group using the matched filtered result. An interference correction signal is constructed using the detected data for each antenna element. The interference cancelled result is subtracted from the received signal of each antenna element, producing an interference cancelled result for each antenna element. Data is successively detected for remaining groups using the interference cancelled result for each antenna element.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2003Date of Patent: September 4, 2007Assignee: InterDigital Technology CorporationInventors: Jaeyoung Kwak, Jung-Lin Pan, Ariela Zeira

Patent number: 7236785Abstract: A multicellular communications system where transmission between a roving subscriber and multiple base station transceivers is maintained throughout the territory. Each mobile subscriber unit has global code seeds for the entire communications system or an updated neighbor list and continuously searches to access available cell base stations while maintaining a communication link with one base station. Candidate cell base stations are interrogated and communicated with. The candidate base station that requires less transmitting energy from the mobile subscriber unit is closely monitored. When the mobile subscriber unit can successfully communicate with less transmit power than currently required by the present base station, the mobile subscriber unit is handed off to the candidate base station transceiver.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2004Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Assignee: InterDigital Technology CorporationInventor: Fatih M. Patent number: 7236793Abstract: A technique for coordinating the operation of subscriber units such as in a wireless communications system so that high-probability-of-interference communications do not take place at the same time in adjacent cell sites. A base station becomes aware of expected periods or time slots of high relatively expected interference from remote units operating in a neighboring cell site, and then schedules only low interference level transmissions for its own remote units during such periods. Expected interference information can be exchanged by base stations directly, through a centralized base station controller-initiated schedule, or by relaying resource load status messages via remote units located near all boundaries.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2001Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Assignee: IPR Licensing, Inc.Inventors: Carlo Amalfitano, Kevin L. Patent number: 7233627Abstract: A method for synchronizing a CDMA receiver to a transmitter when an adaptive antenna is utilized to receive transmitted data, wherein a receiving antenna system is adapted between a 360° reception angle pattern (i.e., an omni-directional pattern) and a fixed reception angle (i.e., a directional pattern) by permitting the receiver to identify a pilot signal having the largest magnitude. The receiver minimizes interference from other pilot signals by steering antenna pattern nulls toward other transmitters. As a result, the time required for the receiver to acquire a valid pilot signal is significantly reduced.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2001Date of Patent: June 19, 2007Assignee: IPR Licensing, Inc.Inventors: James A. Proctor, Antoine J. Rouphael, John E. Hoffmann, George Rodney Nelson, Jr.

Patent number: 7231220Abstract: A method and system for wireless mobile unit communication within a wireless network having geographic areas for preferred communication usage is provided. An estimated geographic location of a mobile unit is determined. The mobile unit is provided with relative position data of at least one preferred communication area relative to the determined mobile unit estimated location. The mobile unit is then relocated to a preferred communication area based on the relative position data. Preferably, a request for a pre-designated preferred communication area location is initiated by a mobile unit transmission and received by a network base station. The mobile unit can be equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) to determine the mobile unit's estimated location. Transmission of estimated location data can be dependent upon whether the mobile unit or the network calculates relative position data.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2003Date of Patent: June 12, 2007Assignee: Interdigital Technology CorporationInventors: Gautam G.
