    Abstract: The invention relates to the preparation of novel dianhydrides of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a polyalkylated mononuclear aromatic radical, preferably a phenylene radical. The mononuclear aromatic radical may be substituted with from three to four lower alkyl radicals, preferably C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl radicals. The dianhydrides are preferably made by the reaction of a monoanhydride monoacid halide and a polyalkylated mononuclear aromatic in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst under Friedel-Crafts reaction conditions. These dianhydrides ae useful reactants in the preparation of polyimides and epoxy curing agents.

    Abstract: A process for preparing 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) propane anhydride is disclosed. 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4 -dimethylphenyl) propane is oxidized under liquid phase conditions in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas, bromine and heavy metal catalyst components to 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) propane in high yield. Addition of an anhydride of a low molecular weight carboxylic acid to the oxidation reaction mixture converts the 1,1,1-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)propane to 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2,2-di(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) propane anhydride.

    Abstract: A first reactor is used to graft polystyrene to a rubber-like polymer. A second reactor is used to obtain a mixture of styrene and polystyrene. The effluent from both the first and the second reactors are fed into a quiescent reaction zone where phase inversion occurs. The phase inverted material is fed into post inversion reactors to substantially complete the polymerization of the styrene monomer, and any unreacted styrene monomer is driven off to form the improved high-impact polystyrene.

    Abstract: Provided is a continuous process for producing 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by the liquid phase oxidation of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene comprising continuously adding to a reaction zone the oxidation reaction components comprising 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, a source of molecular oxygen, a solvent comprising an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, and a catalyst comprising cobalt, manganese and bromine components, wherein the atom ratio of manganese to cobalt is about 5:1 to about 0.3:1, the total of cobalt and manganese is at least about 0.40 weight percent based on the weight of solvent, and maintaining the contents of the reaction zone at a temperature of about 370.degree. F. to about 420.degree. F. and at a pressure sufficient to maintain at least a portion of the monocarboxylic acid in the liquid phase thereby oxidizing the 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene to 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid.

    Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparation of purified terephthalic acid containing 200 ppmw or less of p-toluic acid. A filter cake of purified terephthalic acid is prepared by filtering, under a differential pressure of about or greater than 0.5 psi over the system pressure and a temperature within the range of from about 100.degree. C. to about 205.degree. C., an aqueous slurry of purified terephthalic acid containing a solution of p-toluic acid. The aqueous solution of p-toluic acid remaining in the filter cake of purified terephthalic acid is displaced from the filter cake by water under a pressure gradient over the system pressure at a temperature within the range of from about 100.degree. C. to about 205.degree. C. Pressure flash evaporation of water remaining in the filter cake occurs upon release of the system pressure to lower pressure with consequent lower temperature. The crystalline terephthalic acid product containing 200 ppmw or less p-toluic acid can be dried under atmospheric pressure.
