  • Patent number: 4685307
Abstract: A residential HVAC system includes a heat pump having a compressor arranged to heat a domestic hot water vessel and to heat or cool a storage vessel which is connected to a heat exchanger within the residence. Temperature sensors are provided at critical locations throughout the system and current and voltage sensors are coupled to the power lines feeding the residence. A microprocessor controls the operation of the compressor and other components of the heat pump system in response to measured temperatures, in response to the level of energy supplied to the residence and in response to the existence of on- or off-peak time intervals to operate the compressor and/or resistive heating elements to condition the hot water and storage vessels for subsequent use and to control an interior fan to condition the space. Operation of the compressor is controlled during on-peak intervals as a function of the resident's life style as reflected in power usage and requested comfort level.

  • Patent number: 4680812
Abstract: A plurality of plates are placed in overlapping relationship in an elongated array extending along the spinal column or other body area to be protected. The plates are pivotally interconnected by joints which allow relative rotation to a limited extent between the plates and limited longitudinal movement between the plates so that the armor structure conforms to body changes during normal movements. Overextension is prevented by abutment of the plates against each other, limiting harmful movement of the protected body portions. An arrangement particularly adapted for protecting the spinal column is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4675785
Abstract: A diode assembly includes a base plate in which a plurality of diodes are mounted in a circle, uniformly spaced. A heat pipe within the diode circle extends perpendicular to the plate and is surrounded by radiating, heat-dissipating fins extending radially outwardly to support rings. Insulators mounted on these support rings support conductive straps which are connected through fuses to the other sides of the diodes. The assembly provides complete electrical and thermal symmetry for the diodes. Three such assemblies can be mounted on a single, triangular base plate.

  • Patent number: 4658088
Abstract: A self-threading polymeric fastener and blank therefor which can be used, for example, to support a wall plate over an electrical outlet or switch. The fastener blank comprises three portions, all integrally molded together, including a slotted head, a substantially cylindrical shank and a tapered tip. A helical thread is formed on the shank and tip by deforming the outer surfaces thereof without removing any significant amount of polymeric material therefrom. This is accomplished by rotating the tip and shank in a helically threaded bore, such as that provided in an outlet or switch. The polymeric fastener blank can be integrally molded with a polymeric wall plate to make their colors identical.

  • Patent number: 4655051
Abstract: A heat exchange system includes a compressor, heat exchangers, an expansion valve, a receiver and a reversing valve connected so that refrigerant can flow in either direction through the receiver, depending upon the direction of heat exchange. One embodiment of a receiver for the system includes a chamber with a first conduit connected to the top thereof and a second conduit connected to the bottom. The inner ends of the two conduits are substantially flush with the inner surfaces of the respective walls. The receiver is connected into the system so that the upper conduit acts as an inlet during cooling and an outlet during heating, the lower conduit performing the reverse functions. A second embodiment has both inlet-outlet conduits in the upper wall portion.
