  • Patent number: 4539751
Abstract: Because barbeque forks tend to be rather unwieldy items a barbeque fork is provided which can be separated into a number of shorter pieces or lengths for storage and the pieces then assembled end to end by connecting means before use. Preferably such connecting means comprise a screw-threaded spigot on one piece and a corresponding screw-threaded socket on the adjacent piece. To avoid difficulties in unscrewing the connection means with greasy hands, however, when there are more than three pieces or sections, gripping means such as outwardly projecting lugs are provided the or each section which is not one containing the handle or the prongs. Also to assist in propping up the fork a supporting member, axially slidable along the shaft, can be provided, the supporting member comprises a pair of domed plates placed back to back and each plate having a number of outwardly projecting arms.

  • Patent number: 4521976
Abstract: A method of operating a fluidized bed heat exchanger in which a perforated plate is disposed within a housing for supporting a bed of particulate material which is introduced into the housing through an inlet. Air is passed through the plate to fluidize the particulate material and a drain pipe is provided for discharging the spent material from the bed. The flow rate of air introduced into the bed is increased in a direction across said bed from said inlet to said drain pipe to promote the circulation of the bed materials from the inlet to the drain pipe.

  • Patent number: 4505583
Abstract: In a spectroscopic analyzer, light emitted from a light source is spectroscopically divided into a series of light rays of different wavelength by means of plural sets of interference filter for two-wavelength photometry adapted to intermittently and successively intercepting light from the light source or to be scanned by the light through a rotatable slit. An object under test is irradiated sequentially by the series of light rays transmitted through an optical fiber bundle. Reflected light rays carrying informations of the object are sequentially applied to photoelectric converter. Electric signals thus produced are digitized and arithmetically processed for obtaining a plurality of data corresponding to the plural sets of the interference filters.

  • Patent number: 4504890
Abstract: A compact form of torch which can resemble a lipstick in size and shape so that it can be carried in a handbag comprises a base rotatably supporting a sleeve to move torch between a retracted non-working position and a projecting position. A battery holder is axially movable by engagement of pins projecting from the holder into spiral grooves in the sleeve. A bulb holder is resiliently urged away from the battery holder and constrained to move axially corresponding to the movement of the battery holder except that the bulb holder reaches a stop position just before the battery holder reaches the projecting position so that slight further axial movement of the battery holder causes contact between the lamp carried by the lamp carrier and a battery carried by the battery holder to energize the lamp in the projecting position of the torch.

  • Patent number: 4494392
Abstract: Apparatus for expanding a tube into a bore formed in tube sheet in which a primary explosive containing a relatively high number of grains of explosive per unit length extends within the tube coextensive with that portion of the tube to be expanded. An energy transfer cord extends between a detonator and the primary explosive and includes a relatively low number of grains of explosive per unit length which are insufficient to detonate the primary explosive but which be covered by a sheath to contain the debris and gases associated with the explosion of the latter explosive. A booster extends between the energy transfer cord and the primary explosive and contains an explosive which is detonatable by the energy transfer cord and, upon exploding, detonates the primary explosive.

  • Patent number: 4488482
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for extracting gel from aloe vera leaves without contaminating the gel with toxic juices indigenous to the husks of the leaves. Further, this mechanized extraction is uniquely suited to permit frequent cleaning of the machinery. The leaves are washed, trimmed, and introduced into means for feeding the aloe vera leaves to and through a blade which longitudinally bisects the leaves. The split leaves are then passed through pressing rollers which advance the husks but retain the gel which falls from the pressing rollers into a collection pan. The pressed husks shed additional gel as they are carried over a further expanse of the collection pan and are then transferred to a husk collection conveyor which carries the husks back under the machinery. The pressing rollers are mounted to the frame of the apparatus by a hinged block which permits the pressing rollers to be swung open to permit cleaning of the pressing rollers and the blade.

  • Patent number: 4487572
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for safely and effectively facilitating the ignition of logs positioned on a grate within a fireplace. It includes an elongated open top container and a base for support. The open top of the container maintains a flame sustained by the combustion of vaporized fuel. Once combustion of the fuel is initiated, the container walls defining this opening receive and conduct heat to the fuel reservoir to vaporize more fuel and thereby sustain combustion. Combustion may be initiated by a combustible wick. The upper section of the windward wall of the container slopes downwardly and outwardly from the opening at the top of the container and this surface cooperates with the surface formed by the bottom of the grate and its contents. Together, these surfaces restrict the natural draft underneath the grate producing somewhat of a venturi effect thereby increasing the velocity of the draft.

  • Patent number: 4484638
Abstract: Disclosed is a liquid inertia tool in which the kinetic energy of flowing liquid is converted to useful work by decelerating the liquid flow and directing the inertia force in the water against a movable element in the liquid flowcontaining structure which in turn moves against a work piece. Flow deceleration is achieved by an orifice-effect valve. The valve is reset for flow resumption or acceleration by automatically or selectively applying hydraulic pressure to a reset mechanism. Use of the inertia tool in pile driving and punch press applications is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4484917
Abstract: An external catheterization device and technique is disclosed that provides for increased safety, comfort and mobility. The device is constructed from four major elements, an adhesive surface, a pliable stabilizer, a main body and an outlet tube. The adhesive surface covers the subject side of the stabilizer and surrounds the inlet to the main body of the catheter. The stabilizer is formed of a material conformable to the subject and aids in placing the catheter. The main body of the catheter is formed to carry urine and vaginal discharge which is received through the inlet, to the outlet tube at which conventional drainage devices are attachable. The catheterization technique necessary for utilizing the external catheter of the present requires cleansing the entire urogenital area applying a suitable protective dressing, and pressing the adhesive surface of the catheter into a leak resistent, sealing relationship with the subject's body.

  • Patent number: 4483696
Abstract: A steam separating apparatus wherein a first separating unit receives a steam-water mixture and discharges said mixture in a substantially tangential direction against an impingement plate to separate some water from said mixture. A second separating unit is disposed in a fluid flow relation to the first separating unit and includes a plurality of plates together formed into a closed circular configuration. The latter plates are shaped in a manner to define a plurality of irregular paths for the passage of said mixture so that said mixture impinges on said plates as it passes through said paths to separate additional water from said mixture.
