  • Patent number: 5723173
Abstract: The invention provides a method for manufacturing a solid polymer electrolyte electrolyte fuel cell which exhibits higher performances by sufficiently and uniformly contacting the solid polymer electrolyte with a catalyst to increase the reaction area inside the electrode. The method comprises the steps of dispersing a carbon powder supporting a noble metal catalyst in an organic solvent to obtain a dispersion, mixing the resulting dispersion with an alcoholic solution of a solid polymer electrolyte to produce a colloid of the solid polymer electrolyte and simultaneously to obtain a mixed solution in which said colloid is adsorbed to the carbon powder, applying the mixed solution on one side of a gas-diffusion layer to produce an electrode, and pressing the resulting electrode on at least one side of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane to integrate them.

  • Patent number: 5723340
Abstract: An optical indicator for determining the activity of an ion in a sample is provided with an ionophor which is capable of selectively binding the ion to be measured. The ionophor has at least two functional groups that can form an electron donor acceptor (EDA) complex, the complex bond being broken up by the attachment of the ion to be determined. This will lead to a change in at least one of the measurable optical properties of the indicator in dependence on the activity of the ion to be measured.

  • Patent number: 5722152
Abstract: In assembling a stator being divided into a pole portion and a yoke portion and provided with a winding on the insulated pole portion, the yoke portion is forcibly enlarged outwardly, whereafter the tip ends of the projections of the pole portion are fitted in the recesses of the yoke portion. The two opposing surfaces of each recess are made parallel to each other and the bottom surface of the recess is made parallel to the outer peripheral surface of the yoke portion. The thickness of a portion existing between the bottom surface and the outer peripheral surface is not exceeding 3% of the diameter of the yoke portion and is not less than the thickness of an iron plate of the laminated iron core, whereby the press-fitting load applied when the pole portion is fitted into the yoke portion enlarged is reduced. Thus, even a large-sized stator iron core can readily be assembled and an electric motor of improved properties and enhanced output obtained.

  • Patent number: 5722039
Abstract: A wire, generally made of steel and used to make composite elements of elastomeric material, is submitted to an electrodeposition process in an electrolytic bath for being coated with a zinc/cobalt alloy in which the average cobalt content is lower than 1%. In the coating thickness made of the zinc/cobalt alloy, different cobalt concentrations exist, that is a 1% to 3% concentration at the area close to the metal and a concentration as low as 0.5% maximum at the overlying area. Adhesion promoters for example consisting of cobalt neodecanate, added to the elastomeric material, promote the adhesion of said elastomeric material to the wire.

  • Patent number: 5720419
Abstract: A pre-compression pump sprayer has a spring biased discharge poppet valve element with a seal in engagement with the wall of the piston stem, a seal interruption to establish a discharge valve open position, and an upstream directed throttle valve presenting a two-stage pressure build-up discharge valve establishing a predetermined pressure threshold which when exceeded by fluid pressure generated in the pump chamber during pumping immediately opens the throttle valve and abruptly releases the fluid pressure at the valve open position. The valve has an elongated probe extending into the pump chamber of an extent as to shift the poppet valve open upon engaging the inlet check valve upon a full downstroke of the piston for evacuating air from the pump chamber out through the discharge orifice to effect pump priming.

  • Patent number: 5719397
Abstract: An apparatus for detecting the presence of a target material such as a multicomponent gas is disclosed. The apparatus includes a source of electromagnetic radiation and a device for dispersing the radiation into different frequency bands for targeting the material at different wavelengths corresponding to absorption bands in the material. Spaced apart optoelectric transducers detect the different frequency bands. A processor detects the changes in the output of the transducers occasioned by partial absorption of the electromagnetic radiation from the source by the target material. Processing means also compensates for temperature variations in the source.
