  • Patent number: 5714196
Abstract: A method of making an optical fiber having a strippable polyimide coating includes the steps of drawing an optical fiber through curable polyamic acid solution to form a coating on the fiber and curing the coated fiber. The cured coating can subsequently be stripped from the optical fiber by exposing the cured coating to an organic polar solvent such as acetone. A fiber having a strippable polyimide coating is also provided. The method is particularly applicable to heavy metal fluoride fibers, and to chalcogenide fibers which carry optical signals in the infrared region.

  • Patent number: 5711178
Abstract: A die for use in a stage of a multi-stage die-necking process of a metal body such as a beverage can, has a surface around a center-line. The die surface, seen in longitudinal section through the center-line, has a profile which includes in direct succession a feed-in zone, an intermediate zone and a neck zone. The intermediate zone has, as well as a contact part, a relatively steep part in which tangents to the die surface include an angle .alpha. to the center-line greater than .alpha..sub.n, where .alpha..sub.n is the neck angle between the necked part following die-necking and the center-line of the body. The presence of this non-contact steep part reduces the axial force needed in the die-necking.

  • Patent number: 5711378
Abstract: A tapered adaptor (10) disposed at a free, leading end of a cultivator shank (S) is arranged to co-operate with a blocking member (27). The blocking member (27) defines forwardly facing abutment surfaces (28, 29). They engage a rear edge portion (54) of the socket (46) of a sweep when the sweep is subjected to a hard impact which would otherwise force the socket beyond the position required for a firm wedging frictional grip with the adaptor (10). Thus, the undesired displacement excessively beyond the required grip position is prevented to enable removal of the socket (46) on exchange of the sweep by a hammer blow. A retainer pin (32) is resiliently held in a transverse groove (31) by the nose (35, 36) of a pair of flat springs. Thus the free movement which might result in loss of the pin 32 is prevented while allowing relatively easy withdrawal of the pin when the sweep is to be knocked off the adaptor. Several alternative embodiments are mentioned.

  • Patent number: 5709578
Abstract: A cold cathode fluorescent discharge tube is provided having, as an anode standing for one of discharge electrodes, a mercury discharge structure comprising a metal sintered body formed by sintering powder of a high melting point metal such as titanium, with mercury combined with the metal sintered body. The mercury discharge structure is so formed as to contain a large amount of mercury and is therefore permitted to have a compact shape in order to obtain a requisite amount of mercury. The cold cathode fluorescent discharge tube permits a sufficient amount of mercury to be sealingly incorporated in the interior of the tube without decreasing the ratio of the effective luminescent length to the total length, having suitability to diameter reduction, and can be produced at low cost.
