Abstract: An aqueous liquid combination of simple and complex fluorides, a chelating agent for iron, phosphate ions, a hydroxylamine source, and an oxidizing agent selected from among water soluble nitroaromatic organic compounds, molybdates, and tungstates, provides good quality protective phosphate conversion coatings on ferrous, zinciferous, aluminous, and magnesium and magnesium alloy metal surfaces, without needing any divalent or higher valent metal cations such as are generally used to produce high quality phosphate conversion coatings. If the combination includes suitable surfactants, no prior chemical cleaning of the metal to be treated is required for good results.
Abstract: Zinciferous surfaces, particularly those of galvanized steel, may be effectively protected against corrosion, either as treated or after painting, while remaining easy to weld, by contact with an aqueous solution containing chromium in both +6 and +3 valence states, phosphate, a tertiary alcohol or similar oxidation stable, water soluble organic compound as a wetting agent, and a silane coupling agent, followed by drying with a film from the solution still in place on the surface. A thin coating containing 10-200 mg/m.sup.2 of chromium is formed on the surface to provide a protective layer that is also an excellent base for paint.
Abstract: A granular mixture produced by spray drying of(a) 45 to 75% by weight zeolite,(b) 1 to 6% by weight of a water soluble soap of substantially saturated C.sub.12-18 fatty acids,(c) 1 to 12% by weight homopolymers or copolymers of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or maleic acid or water-soluble salts thereof, expressed as sodium salt,(d) 0 to 25% by weight sodium sulfate,(e) 0 to 5% by weight surfactants of the nonionic polyglycol ether derivative type,(f) 10 to 22% by weight water, has an average particle size of 0.2 to 1.2 mm and an apparent density of 350 to 680 g/l. The product, which may be used as a detergent additive, has a high adsorption capacity for liquid to paste-form detergent constituents, more particularly nonionic surfactants, and improved flushing behavior when used in domestic washing machines.

Abstract: A polyamide resin adapted for use in thermographic inks prepared from certain dimer acids and monomeric acids and a mixture of a diamine and a polyamine. The alkylene diamines and triamines, such as ethylene diamine and diethylene triamine, are preferred. With oleic acid dimer the monomeric acids are preferably stearic or isostearic acids and mixtures thereof. With the dimer of polyunsaturated acids the monomeric acid may also be the monomer residue from dimerized oleic acid.
Abstract: Surface active alkylglucosides are prepared in a 2-step process from starch or starch degradation products such as polyglucose or glucose syrup, the first step consisting of reaction with a short chained alcohol, particularly butanol, while the second step comprises transacetalization with the longer chained C.sub.8-22, more particularly C.sub.12-18, alcohol, with fatty alcohols of natural origin preferably being used.

Abstract: The use of certain imidazole derivatives such as 1-benzyl-2-methyl-imidazole, 1-benzyl-imidazole, 1-hydroxyethyl-2-phenyl-4,5-dihydroimidazole, 2-phenyl-4,5-dihydroimidazole and N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole as primer in the bonding of molded parts, especially parts made of polyolefins, with cyanoacrylate adhesives gives bonds with high strengths, even when the application of adhesive is delayed for rather long"open" times after the application of the primer.
Abstract: Joint-sealing and coating compounds containing aqueous dispersions of polymers and copolymers, except for polyacrylates and acrylate copolymers, plasticizers and typical additives, such as pigments and the like, show excellent properties, particularly in regard to spreadability, smoothing behavior and resistance to spray water of uncured surfaces of these compounds providing they contain nonionic cellulose ethers selected from the group consisting of hydroxyethyl, hydorxyethyl-methyl, hydroxypropyl-methyl and hydroxypropyl cellulose having a Brookfield viscosity (2% aqueous solution at 20.degree. C.) of at least 3,000 mPa.s.

Abstract: The invention is a composition and method for treating aluminum. The composition comprises phosphonic acid, fluorozirconic acid, fluorotitanic acid, fluorohafnic acid, or fluorosilicic acid and a Mannich adduct of an polyalkenyl phenol or tannin. The aluminum is treated by contact with the composition. An inorganic-organic conversion coating is applied to the aluminum in a single step.
Abstract: The invention relates to low-flammability structural elements, particularly boards, and to a process for constructing them. The low-flammability structural elements are constructed utilizing combustible plastics waste material. They contain in addition non-combustible inorganic additives and a flame-proofing agent mixture. The components are held together by at least one hardened adhesive. Because of this build-up the structural elements display, despite the combustible components, low-flammability.
Abstract: In the catalytic hydrogenation of fatty acid methyl esters, the fatty acid methyl esters are continuously reacted with hydrogen under pressures of from 20 to 100 bar and at temperatures of from 160.degree. to 270.degree. C. with molar ratios of hydrogen to fatty acid methyl ester substrate of from 10:1 to 500:1. The reaction is carried out over catalysts which contain from 30 to 40% by weight copper, from 23 to 30% by weight chromium, from 1 to 10% by weight manganese, from 1 to 10% by weight silicon and from 1 to 7% by weight barium (% by weight, based in each case on oxidic catalyst mass) and, if desired, other transition metals in the form of their oxides. After calcination of the components, the catalyst is converted into shaped particulate and/or granulated elements with from 1 to 10% by weight, based on oxidic catalyst, of at least one binder in addition to 1 to 10% by weight graphite. The catalyst is activated with hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas mixture.

Abstract: A polyester is provided which facilitates the separation of blood into light and heavy phases via centrifugation in a blood collection vessel. The polyester is useful as a component of a partitioning composition formulated to have appropriate specific gravity to be positioned intermediate the light and heavy blood phases during centrifugation. A partitioning composition including a polyester of the invention provides a particular advantage in blood collection vessels used in therapeutic drug monitoring, due to the relatively low affinity between the polyester component of the composition and commonly monitored classes of drugs.
Abstract: The invention is a collector composition for a flotation process containing a primary or secondary amine or amine salt and at least one of xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, xanthogen format and thiococarbamate and a flotation process which utilizer the collector composition.
