  • Patent number: 4633085
Abstract: An electron microscope having plural stages of focusing lenses between an objective lens and an electron gun. The magnetic pole piece of the focusing lens of the final stage which is on the side of the objective lens takes a conic form which tapers toward the objective lens. The yoke of the objective lens on the side of the focusing lenses is centrally provided with a conic recess. This structure makes it possible to shorten the distance between the position of the magnetic field produced by an auxiliary lens and the front focal point defined by a front objective lens without introducing interference between the focusing lens of the final stage and the object lens proper. Thus, the observation of an electron micrograph covering a wide field of view facilitates accurate analysis of the physical properties of a designated microscopic region on a specimen.

  • Patent number: 4630610
Abstract: A surgical vest designed for use after mastectomy or mammoplasty and also for casual- and sleep-wear, which promotes postoperative healing and provides support for the breasts or prostheses by covering at least the thorax of a wearer with a soft thoracic sheath. The thoracic sheath bears one or two support straps on its outer surface; one end of the strap is attached in the area of the sternum of the wearer, and the other end of the strap is affixed in the area beneath the arm. As a result, the support straps pass beneath and support the breasts or prostheses without contacting or binding the underlying skin in any way. In addition, the thoracic sheath provides an absorbent dressing for the postoperative site and can serve to hold additional absorbent materials in place, either between its layers or adjacent the skin, eliminating the need for painful adhesive dressings in the area of the wound.

  • Patent number: 4628263
Abstract: A nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer includes a device for sensing the angular position of the sample tube and a device for adding up the free induction decay signals. The RF pulses are applied to the sample according to the output signal from the sensing device when a certain location of the sample tube is at a first specific position and also when the certain location is at a second position diametrically opposite to the first position. The two free induction decay signals obtained in this way are added up by the adding device to prevent occurrence of peaks, known as spinning sidebands, at positions shifted from the peaks of an NMR spectrum by integral multiples of the rotational frequency of the sample when the axis of rotation of the sample tube does not coincide with the central line of the sample.

  • Patent number: 4626783
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for selectively detecting multiple quantum transitions of a selected order, the transitions taking place in a sample containing a system of rotating magnetic resonators. The spectrometry comprises the steps of: (a) applying a pulse train to the resonators, the pulse train consisting of RF pulses in which at least one pulse is .phi. degrees out of phase with the last pulse; (b) detecting the free induction decay signal emanating from the resonators for a period of time t2 after the application of the pulse train, using two channels of detecting system which are 90.degree. out of phase with each other, and storing it in a memory. The steps are repeated changing the values of the evolution time t1, resetting the values of .phi., and adding 90.degree., 180.degree., and 270.degree. to all values of .phi.. The data are combined and converted to frequency domain by double Fourier transformation with respect to t1 and t2.

  • Patent number: 4626689
Abstract: When a transmission-type electron microscope is used to make an observation of a diffraction image produced by a focused electron beam, it is desired that the divergence angle of the electron beam be varied at will while maintaining the spot diameter of the beam on a specimen constant. The present invention provides three stages of focusing lenses and a means for controlling these lenses in interrelated manner in a space between an objective lens and an electron gun in which the specimen is placed. The three stages of lenses are designed to be controlled independently. When an operation is performed to increase the divergence angle of the electron beam, the excitations of the first and second stages of focusing lenses are reduced while the excitation of the third stage of focusing lens is increased, thus maintaining the spot diameter of the beam on the specimen constant.

  • Patent number: 4624021
Abstract: The present invention provides a specialized cushion-like support having an arcuate body and a neck attached thereto. The cushion-like support fits adjacent the torso and between the legs of the user, thus separating the legs and supporting the upper arm, shoulders, spine and back. The neck of the cushion-like support functions as a bolster, preventing the torso of the user from twisting or rolling forward, and the body of the support minimizes or eliminates friction and pressure gradients between the legs as the user sleeps or rests on his side. The cushion-like support is designed for use as a regular sleep support for both children and adults, is easily adapted into a stuffed toy for children, and is particularly well-suited, in therapeutic bed rest and hospital applications, for minimizing fatigue in the arms, shoulders and back and for preventing abrasion, pressure points and decubitus ulceration on the lower limbs and extremities.

  • Patent number: 4624671
Abstract: A method of sizing a breast prosthesis and implanting an accurately sized breast prosthesis is disclosed. The method invovles implanting an empty, inflatable elastomeric balloon in a breast, filling the balloon with a liquid to a desired size, measuring the amount of liquid in the filled balloon, removing the liquid from the balloon, and removing the empty balloon from the breast. A final breast prosthesis is sized in accordance with the amount of liquid that was in the filled balloon. The properly sized final breast prosthesis is then implanted into the breast.

  • Patent number: 4623783
Abstract: A method for large-angle convergent-beam diffraction comprises selecting a portion of the diffraction pattern formed by an objective lens, by the use of a diaphragm. Then, a portion of the electron micrograph which is formed by the electron beam passed through the diaphragm is detected, thus producing a signal. This enables a large-angle convergent-beam electron diffraction method that permits one to examine a specimen region which is much narrower than conventional.
