Abstract: An improved process for preparing reduced-odor or odorless esters, preferably benzoate esters, octanoate esters, aliphatic emollient esters and glycol dibenzoate esters. The improved process comprises, in part, removing the esterification catalyst from the crude ester after the esterification reaction is substantially complete, before neutralization of acidity. The resultant ester compositions are odorless or have substantially reduced odor as compared to commercially available esters.

Abstract: Novel quaternary ammonium compounds are disclosed, as well as methods for their preparation and their use in the treatment of hair, fibers and textiles as softening and conditioning agents. The high substantivity of these novel quaternary ammonium compounds to hair, fibers, and textiles, and their mildness to the skin and eyes, make them well suited for softening and conditioning fibers for applications such as personal care, laundry, and textile use. For example, quaternary ammonium compounds such as N′,N″,N′″-Triethyl, N′,N′,N′″,N′″-Tetramethyl, N″-[(Polyhydroxypropyl)-&ohgr;-hydroxyalkyl], dipropylene triammonium triethosulfate have been prepared. Quaternary ammonium compounds may also include those involving other reactive groups known to those skilled in the art.

Abstract: A vacuum picker apparatus for cups includes a vacuum picker head with concave surface areas, each being preferably ½° reverse angle, and each surface area having a hole therethrough that allows for a vacuum to be formed at the picker head. When the vacuum is formed, the side wall of the cup is drawn, inside the overall circumference of the head at each concave surface area to provide for an effective seal to hold the cup to the picker head, which reduces deformation of the cup and facilitates its extraction for further processing. A protective ring or skirt at the picker head has spaced apart notches through which apertures are formed to direct a thrust of air against the stack to force the stack away from the individual cup being denested. The dual action of the vacuum picker apparatus removes an individual cup from a stack of cups and forces the stack away from the cup to facilitate removal of the individual cup from the stack.

Abstract: A kit for an ear piercing cartridge includes a container having preferably a plurality of chambers or cells therein, in each of which is disposed a retaining assembly adapted to releasably receive an ear piercing cartridge. A portion of the retaining assembly is removable so that an ear piercing cartridge having different dimensions can be removably mounted in the same cell. The cassette has double sidewall construction to protect the cells which are hermetically sealed with a material sheet displaceable to access a particular one of the cells.

Abstract: Compositions of matter comprising benzoate esters of hydroxyl terminated polyether polysiloxane copolyols, in particular dimethicone copolyol benzoates, and process for preparing same. The benzoate esters are useful for personal care cleansing products, such as bar and liquid soaps, skin and hair care products and textiles and fibers. The compounds are prepared by reacting benzoic acid with hydroxyl terminated polyether polysiloxane copolyols.

Abstract: Novel oat-lipid based derivatives, surfactants and emollients are disclosed, as well as their use in the production of surface active derivatives or non-surface active esters, and ester emollients. The surfactants and fatty derivatives are useful as emollients, dispersants, emulsifiers, and conditioners for hair care and skin care products. For example, derivatives such as amides of oat fatty triglycerides (“OFTG”)/Monoethanolamine; Acyl Amidopropyl Dimethyl Amines of OFTG as Cationic Surfactants; Betaines based on OFTG; Esters of OFTG based Fatty Acids and Isostearyl Alcohol; Quaternaries based on OFTG based Amido-propyl Dimethyl Amine; Sulfosuccinamates based on OFTG—MEA Amides; and Sulfosuccinamates based on OFTG—Iso Propanolamines have been prepared. Derivatives may also include those involving other reactive groups known to those skilled in the art.

Abstract: An apparatus for mixing fluids includes a housing which is mounted in line with a conduit carrying a primary fluid. A deformable member is mounted in the housing and an inlet conduit carrying a secondary fluid communicates with the deformable member. An adjustment knob adjusts the width of the deformable member, thereby adjusting the venturi effect created by the deformable member in the flow of primary fluid and adjusting the flow of secondary fluid which flows into the deformable member and is induced out of the deformable member through a plurality of holes to mix with the primary fluid. A system is provided with the fluid inductor apparatus and includes a sensor at the fluid outlet to generate a signal to control the geometric profile of the deformable member to adjust mixing of the fluids.

Abstract: A glass machining apparatus is provided to machine large-scale glass sheets. The apparatus includes a base plate with an operating use hole, a functional section support with a base end section that pivots on the base plate, a glass machining disk at the front end section of the functional support section, and a drive motor on the functional section support that drives the glass machining disk. The functional section support moves up and down about a pivot support in the center of the base end section and can be variably positioned in any of a non-operating position spaced above the base plate, a first operating position that is adjacent the upper surface of the base plate, and a second operating position that passes below the base plate through the operating use hole.

Abstract: A dispenser for a volatile aromatic substance is provided which includes a closed container formed from a single blank of folded sheet material in which the aromatic substance is deposited. The blank is folded to form a plurality of coacting interior and exterior walls, one of the walls having a tab form which is broken along a line of weakness to expose at least one vent passage in an underlying interior wall through which the vapors of the aromatic substance may pass. The tab form is hingedly connected to the blank so that it will not be removed therefrom and in one embodiment, coacts with a vent passage so that the tab form is displaced from underlying interior walls to modulate the circulation of vapors flowing from the vent passages. A hermetic coating is provided to preserve the shelf life of the container, including the aromatic substance deposited therein.

Abstract: A filter tube for use in earth coated type filters includes a flexible permeable tubular sheet internally supported by a helical spring. The internal spring is connected between opposite ends of the filter tube to support the full length of the tube wall. One end of the tube is connected to an external spring and anchor plate. In a slack position, the tube end folds over an end collar connected to the spring. Extension of the anchor plate applies tension to stretch the spring and tube to a taut position during a cycling operation which oscillates the tube to dislodge accumulated material.

Abstract: Novel capillary feed marking instruments capable of producing edible colored indicia directly on food substrates and medicaments are disclosed. The marking instruments are used to write or decorate directly on porous and non-porous food substrates in a controlled fashions and without the need to pre-mix colors or handle dyes. Kits comprising a plurality of such marking instruments in various colors and, optionally, edible substances or artistic aids, are also disclosed. The marking instruments of the invention may also be employed in a system for classifying solid, oral medicaments such as pills, tablets or capsules, for identification and easy detection.
