  • Patent number: 8305021
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for simultaneously measuring the rotational speed and/or direction of a shaft, and providing control power in accordance with the shaft rotation. The apparatus includes a permanent magnet machine (PMM) having a multipole rotor and a stator. The rotor has a plurality of permanent magnet poles and connection to the rotating shaft; the stator includes a winding and electrical connections, so that motion of the rotor with respect to the stator causes a voltage signal at the electrical connections. The apparatus also includes a circuit including a power conversion portion and a speed/direction sensing portion. The circuit receives the voltage signal from the PMM, and simultaneously outputs control power from the power conversion portion and a signal indicating the rotational speed and/or direction of the shaft from the sensing portion.

  • Patent number: 8307288
Abstract: Capability to present forms, items and menu commands behavior, which translates to other languages, in combination with network communication and a user interface event listener, is compiled into binary code (Step 1), loaded (Step 2) and run (Step 3) on a mobile networked device. Such capability includes at least one of placement, appearance, behavior, logic, format, user interaction behavior, input validation and video. Instructions, not characterized as compiled code, browser pages or scripting language, are assembled and stored on a server. The running binary code on the mobile networked device requests and receives the instructions (Step 4) which trigger the capability code to present variable format and information (Step 5).

  • Patent number: 8304864
Abstract: A redistributed lead frame for use in a molded plastic semiconductor package is formed from an electrically conductive substrate by a sequential metal removal process. The process includes patterning a first side of the substrate to form an array of lands separated by channels; disposing a first molding compound within those channels; patterning a second side of the substrate to form an array of chip attach sites and routing circuits electrically interconnecting the array of lands and the array of chip attach sites; directly electrically interconnecting input/output pads on a semiconductor device to the chip attach sites; and encapsulating the semiconductor device, the array of chip attach sites and the routing circuits with a second molding compound. This process is particularly suited for the manufacture of chip scale packages and very thin packages.

  • Patent number: 8291828
Abstract: A sub-caliber bullet with an aerodynamic shape has long-range accuracy due to a high muzzle velocity and reduced time of flight to a target. The bullet has forward and aft portions and a mid-portion. The forward portion has a density in excess of 10/cm3 while the mid-portion has a lower density. The bullet has an aspect ratio of at least 5:1 and a diameter, d, that satisfies a Power Law equation: d=D*(x/L)n where D is a maximum bullet diameter, L is the length, x is a distance rearward from a nose of the bullet and n is a Power Law exponent that is between 0.5 and 0.75. In some embodiments, a blind bore extends into the mid-portion from the aft portion and a sustainer propellant within the bore ignites as the bullet exits a gun muzzle to provide a velocity boost and to overcome aerodynamic drag.

  • Patent number: 8295065
Abstract: A load distribution and management system (LDMS) has a source of multi-phase power and multiple power lines. A separate power line is associated with each phase of power. These power lines connect the power source to a plurality of outlets. A threshold compare circuit is effective to compare power drawn through the plurality of outlets to a preset power limit and signal a phase rotation control if the power drawn exceeds the threshold power. The phase rotation control effective to interchange the power line associated with two of said multi-phases in response to said signal and a rotation detector disables those outlets not in use in response to the interchange of power and power lines. Conversely, when the power drawn is less than the preset threshold power, the phase rotation control returns the power phase to its associated power line signaling the rotation detector to enable disabled outlets.

  • Patent number: 8283544
Abstract: Methods and systems for automatically tuning a drum are disclosed. In some embodiments, the methods and systems include the following: (a) exciting a drum head to cause it to resonate; (b) sensing a vibration frequency at one or more points relative to each tension rod; (c) determining a global average vibration frequency of the vibration frequencies for the points relative to each tension rod; (d) comparing the vibration frequencies of each of the points relative to each tension rod to the global average vibration frequency to determine a correction value for each point relative to the global average vibration frequency; (e) automatically turning each tension rod based on the correction value for the relative points; (f) automatically repeating steps (a)-(e) until each of the vibration frequencies of each of the points relative to each tension rod is substantially similar; and (g) automatically turning each tension rod in a uniform direction substantially simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 8271322
Abstract: A system and method for engaging a customer in an enhanced shopping experience. The customer provides customer information which is stored on a database. An identifying token (e.g. a card) is issued to the customer. This identifying token is detected (e.g. by an RFID sensor) when carried by the customer into a retailer's space. This causes at least a portion of the customer information to be accessible from the database to retail personnel while the customer is physically present in the retailer's space, thereby facilitating personal engagement by the retail personnel with the customer.

  • Patent number: 8258917
Abstract: A control device for a vehicle or mechanism includes a portable displacement controller which permits a non-technical user to achieve effective control of the vehicle or mechanism, by moving the portable displacement controller intuitively with little learning effort. A first sensing device, attached to the displacement controller, detects the user's controlling motion. A second sensing device, attached to the object being controlled, detects motion thereof. An interface device receives signals from the sensing devices, processes those signals to determine relative motion of the controlling motion and the object's motion and outputs a control signal in accordance with the processed signals. The sensing devices each detect motion in six degrees of freedom; the sensing devices each include a three-axis accelerometer, a three-axis gyroscope, and a three-axis magnetometer. In specific embodiments, the accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers include micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) devices.

  • Patent number: 8246731
Abstract: The present invention describes methods and systems for extracting, capturing, reducing, storing, sequestering, or disposing of carbon dioxide (CO2), particularly from the air. The CO2 extraction methods and systems involve the use of chemical processes. Methods are also described for extracting and/or capturing CO2 via exposing air containing carbon dioxide to a solution comprising a base—resulting in a basic solution which absorbs carbon dioxide and produces a carbonate solution. The solution is causticized and the temperature is increased to release carbon dioxide, followed by hydration of solid components to regenerate the base.
