  • Patent number: 8096243
Abstract: A sub-caliber bullet with an aerodynamic shape has long-range accuracy due to a high muzzle velocity and reduced time of flight to a target. The bullet has a forward portion, a mid-portion and an aft portion. The forward portion has a density in excess of 10/cm3 while the mid-portion has a lower density. The bullet has an aspect ratio of at least 5:1 and a diameter, d, that satisfies a Power Law equation: d=D*(x/L)n where D is a maximum bullet diameter, L is the length, x is a distance rearward from a nose of the bullet and n is a Power Law exponent that is between 0.5 and 0.75. In some embodiments, a blind bore extends into the mid-portion from the aft portion and a sustainer propellant within the blind bore ignites as the bullet exits a gun muzzle to provide a velocity boost and to overcome aerodynamic drag.

  • Patent number: 8087281
Abstract: A method to make a flanged pin is described. The method includes feeding wire through a forming die whereby the wire is deformed to create a straight pin. The straight pin is then fed from the forming die to a heading die having a pre-formed cavity where a first portion of the straight pin is located in the forming die and a second portion of the straight pin is located in the heading die. A portion of the pin is secured in the forming and heading die, having a portion of the straight pin disposed in a gap defined by a space between the heading die and the forming die. As the die gap is closed, the portion of the straight pin is displaced into a pre-formed cavity thereby creating a flange.

  • Patent number: 8084300
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a semiconductor device package to provide RF shielding. The device is mounted on a laminated substrate having conducting pads on its top surface. A molding compound covers the substrate top surface and encapsulates the devices. The substrate is disposed on a tape; the molding compound and the substrate are cut through, forming package units separated by the saw cut width and exposing a portion of a conducting pad. In an embodiment, the tape is stretched to widen the gap between package units. A conductive shield is applied to cover each package unit and to make electrical contact with the exposed conducting pad portion, thereby connecting to a ground trace beneath the device and providing RF shielding for the device. A single-unit molding process may be used, in which the conducting pad is exposed during and after molding.

  • Patent number: 8035357
Abstract: A permanent magnet machine (PMM) has a kinetic portion electrically coupled to a power conversion portion. Motive power is provided to the kinetic portion by a torque applied to a motive shaft coupled to a prime mover, such as an aircraft engine or an automobile engine. A sensor is effective to detect a fault condition in the kinetic portion. When a fault is detected, the sensor applies a voltage to a winding within the kinetic portion generating an opposing directional counter torque to the motive shaft. A combination of the torque and counter torque exceeds a fracture yield strength of the motive shaft. The fault condition is then rendered safe while the prime mover may continue normal operation.
