  • Patent number: 6186794
Abstract: An interactive adaptive learning system. A collection of core stimuli consisting of at least auditory and visual symbols and information, are stored on a computer. A number of different relationships between the core stimuli are created which can then be presented as discrimination or identification tasks to the user. Different sets of stimuli are then presented succeedingly to the user and the user is requested to respond. The form of response can either be to investigate and analyze the stimuli, or attributes of the stimuli, or answer of the quarry regarding the discrimination or identification task. The system has a built in strategy for progressing the user through learning tasks. The users actions and responses in reaction to the stimuli are all recorded and analyzed. Based not only on the success rate of the user responses, but also on other characteristics of the users reaction to the stimuli, the users learning strategy is classified.

  • Patent number: 6188186
Abstract: A circuit and method for driving a magnetostriction oscillator which is used for generating a high output ultrasonic wave by using a pulse width modulation is provided. In the circuit, a controller outputs first and second variable digital signals in order to control a duty cycle of a magnetostriction oscillator. A pulse width modulating circuit generates a variable pulse width modulating signal based on the first and second variable digital signals from the controller. A driver drives the magnetostriction oscillator according to the variable pulse width modulating signal from the pulse width modulating circuit. According to the circuit, the system operates for a long time so that stability of equipment can be obtained. The circuit uses low voltage and low energy so that efficiency of the system is promoted.

  • Patent number: 6186987
Abstract: An improved aortic cannula is provided for use in heart by-pass surgery. The cannula includes an elongated tube with a terminal end. The terminal end has a ramped surface leading to the discharge opening. The ramped surface terminates in a spoon-shaped lip. The spoon-shaped lip directs blood out of the cannula opening toward the ascending aorta or aortic arch in a U-shaped dispersion so as to preclude impact on the aortic wall. A bead adjacent the opening facilitates dispersion of the exiting blood. The opening has an upper edge with an inverted V-shaped contour which also facilitates dispersion of the blood.

  • Patent number: 6184775
Abstract: An improved surface mount resistor and method for making the same includes a body comprised of an elongated strip of electrically resistive material and a resistor terminal formed at each end of the resistive material. The resistive material is machined with a laser beam to create a current path having a desired resistance. The pattern cut is determined by partitioning the resistive material into a plurality of squares forming a current path through the resistive material with the correct resistivity. The resistive material is cut primarily with axial cuts so that the beam strength of the resistive material is maintained.

  • Patent number: 6183046
Abstract: An adjustable armrest is provided for a riding lawn mower which normally has an operator's seat positioned thereon with the seat including armrests at either side of the seat. The armrests are normally pivotally movable from an operative position to an inoperative position. In the operative position, the armrests are designed to support the arms of the operator while the operator is manipulating the control levers of the mower. An adjuster plate is selectively rotatably mounted on each of the armrest support frames with the adjuster plate being selectively rotatably mounted with respect to the armrest support frame to selectively vary the amount of downward pivotal movement of the armrest. The adjuster plate has a bolt opening formed therein to facilitate the rotatable mounting of the adjuster plate on the support frame. The bolt opening is offset in at least two directions from the center of the adjuster plate so that the edges or ends thereof are spaced at different distances from the bolt opening.

  • Patent number: 6185090
Abstract: Doped tantalum and niobium pellets with nitrogen is described wherein the resulting pellets are substantially free of nitride precipitate on their outer surfaces. The tantalum and niobium pellets are formed by heating the pellets to a temperature of from about 600-1400° C. in a nitrogen gas atmosphere and then in a vacuum which causes nitrogen contacting a pellet to diffuse into the inner portion of the pellet instead of forming a precipitate. The resulting pellets have improved DCL stability and reliability in comparison to prior art nitrogen-doped tantalum and niobium pellets.
