Abstract: An apparatus and method for inspection of metallic surfaces before subsequent treatment thereof (for example, painting) are disclosed. In accordance with the invention, several light sources illuminate the inspected surface with light beams having different wave lengths, reflected radiation is detected and converted to electrical signals, the electrical signals are processed digitally, and the results of processing are displayed. Some of the light sources are mounted so as to produce light beams inclined with respect to the inspected surface. These light beams are defined by an angular divergence of not more than 5 degrees. Display of results can be presented, in terms of the ISO standard, for inspection and assessment of industrial steel surfaces (i.e., in terms of preparation grades).

Abstract: A method for forming a shallow junction of a semiconductor device using a zirconium film to cover a semiconductor substrate and implanting impurities into the zirconium film. A titanium film is then formed over the zirconium film and both the zirconium and the titanium films are subjected to a thermal treatment to form a zirconium silicide and a titanium silicide. Unreacted parts of the zirconium film and titanium film are removed and the zirconium and titanium silicides are then subject to a second thermal treatment.

Abstract: A zoom lens system includes a plurality of lens units. First to third focal length zones are set according to the focal length. During focusing, in the first focal length zone, the lens units are moved at a first constant ratio, and in the third focal length zone, the lens units are moved at a second constant ratio which is different from the first constant ratio. In the second focal length zone, the movement ratio of the lens units varies according to the focal length.

Abstract: A data transfer apparatus for providing efficient data transfer between one memory device and multiple devices by providing high speed switching of the multiple devices according to a count of the number of the data transfers performed between the one memory device and any of the multiple devices. The data transfer apparatus comprises a transferring unit for controlling a data transfer between the memory and a device; a counting unit for counting one each time data is transferred; and a selecting unit for selecting a device in accordance with a count value by decoding the count value output from the counting unit. The transferring unit controls the data transfer between the memory and the device selected by the selecting unit. The above data transfer apparatus may include the counting unit consisting of n-bits of a binary counter, 2.sup.n devices, and the selecting unit consisting of a decoder that inputs n-bits and outputs 2.sup.n -bits of data.

Abstract: A prefabricated framing unit for constructing non-load-bearing walls and partitions is disclosed. The framing units have vertical studs which both pivot in respect to the horizontal members, to allow collapsing of the unit, and telescope to allow the unit to be raised to fit the space between ceiling and floor without measuring and cutting to height.

Abstract: A folded single sheet mailer is provided which comprises a rectangular sheet (12) provided with transverse and longitudinal lines of perforation and transverse and longitudinal glue lines. The sheet (12) is folded onto itself along a transverse fold line (14) which is offset with respect to the center of the sheet (12). The sheet (12) is then folded along a plurality of secondary fold lines (28,30) and sealed to produce an outgoing envelope which can be mailed. The mailer includes a return envelope for use when placing an order.

Abstract: The translator of the present invention includes the following units. A unit for analyzing semantic structure of a received source language sentence through a morphological and syntactic analyses, a unit for transforming the semantic structure of the source language sentence into that of the target language by determining target language words equivalent to individual words composing the source language sentence while, in case of need, supplementing a word to conform to the grammar of the target language, and a unit for generating a target language sentence by rearranging the determined words in conformance with the semantic structure of the target language. The translator further includes a unit for holding various display modes applied to a word supplemented in order to display it distinguishable from the other words composing the target language sentence.

Abstract: A steel extrusion apparatus is shown having an improved die stack with a direct cone geometry. The die stack includes a die holder with removable and replaceable die inserts. The die inserts are made from a high strength material while the die holder is made of a less expensive, traditional material. A hot metal billet is extruded through an orifice provided in the die insert of the die holder. The die stack assembly is retained as an assembled unit as the extrusion container is moved out of contact with the assembly and the butt end of the metal billet is discarded. The die stack assembly is then again located on the extrusion container as a unit to begin another extrusion cycle.

Abstract: A both-sides playing optical disc player includes a pickup carriage having a sliding motor, a power transfer gear for the motor, a pair of guide rollers, and a pickup carriage at a reproducing position. A pair of upper and lower rack elements are provided at a reproducing position, for moving the pickup carriage. A turning unit having a guide formed of a guide roller and rotating the pickup carriage along a nearest semicircle near an outer circle of the disc is provided. The turning unit has a turning plate rotated together with the pickup carriage using an additional turning motor. The sliding motor and the power transfer gear for moving the pickup carriage may perform turning by providing a U shaped rack element for the movement within the reproducing position.

Abstract: A reserve-recording method and apparatus for a VCR are described which generate a voice signal to inform the user of information required to set and perform the reserve-recording. The apparatus includes a recording switching circuit to form a recording line between the apparatus and one of a plurality of external input devices, including a tuner for receiving a television broadcast. The reserve-recording method informs the user by voice and screen of information required to set a reserve-recording program, sets a reserve-recording mode, sorts the reserve-recording programs in their reserve numbers in order of the recording start time, and discriminates the reserve recording mode. A method of sorting reserve-recording programs according to recording start time is also provided.

Abstract: An end-pumping laser system, which includes a resonator and a single pumping radiation source. The resonator includes an input coupler, a lasing medium and an output coupler. The single pumping radiation source pumps radiation axially into the resonator. The input coupler of the resonator is a retroreflector having three orthogonal surfaces which is located coaxially with, and intermediate between, the resonator and the pumping radiation source. The retroreflector is oriented so that radiation from the pumping radiation source simultaneously impinges on the three orthogonal surfaces of the retroreflector.

Abstract: A light bulb cooling jacket is adapted to confine a light bulb in a space through which cooling liquid, such as water, may be circulated. The light bulb cooling jacket includes an shell having a rim, the rim defining an opening in the shell. A stopper fits in the opening in the shell and seals against the rim of the shell. The stopper has an aperture in it. The aperture is adapted to receive a portion of a light bulb, which is held and sealed in place in the aperture. The means employed to hold the bulb in place is adapted to engage a generally cylindrical portion of the light bulb, such as the neck of a standard 1000 W bulb. An important characteristic of the present invention that follows from this construction is that the light bulb cooling jacket may be used with a variety of standard high intensity light bulbs. Ports are provided in the stopper for introducing and withdrawing cooling liquid from the space enclosed by the shell and the stopper.

Abstract: A plant holder, including a base adapted to be supported on a horizontal surface, a vertically-extending column fixed to the base, a plurality of horizontally-extending containers mounted at different levels to the vertically-extending column, with each container adapted to receive a quantity of plant growing medium, and a pump for pumping water from the reservoir to the topmost container mounted to the column.

Abstract: An enzyme-labelled antibody adapted for use in a homogeneous immunoassay is provided. The enzyme-labelled antibody is a conjugate of an enzyme with two or more different monoclonal antibodies, each of the monoclonal antibodies being capable of specifically recognizing and binding to a different epitope of the same antigen. By using the enzyme-labelled antibody in the homogeneous enzyme immunoassay process, an analyte can be quantitatively analyzed at a higher sensitivity through a simple operation. Also provided is a dry immunoassay element comprising an immunological reaction layer containing the enzyme-labelled antibody. By the provision of such an immunoassay element, a further simplified quick analysis of an analyte is realized to give an accurate result.

Abstract: A pressure relief valve, for pressurized fluid storage vessels such as a rail tank car for volatile liquids, has a flap valve for rotational movement in a valve passage between a closed position seated on a valve seat and blocking the passage and an open position in which the passage is substantially unobstructed. A spring arrangement for keeping the valve closed against a rated pressure includes an externally mounted spring system which, when exposed to fire conditions which might threaten the wall strength of the vessel, loses spring temper so as to reduce the closing pressure of the valve. The flap valve is supported through an arm by a ball joint allowing a limited pivotal movement, and the valve seat is located in the valve passage by an O-ring allowing a limited degree of float in its own plane.

Abstract: Thick oriented films are produced from oxides of molybdenum, tungsten or titanium. These films comprise a plurality of single-molecular thickness layers of semi-crystalline oxide having parallel basal planes. The oxides are produced by sintering highly oriented films of the corresponding metallic sulfide at a temperature of 300.degree.-350.degree. C. The film may be deposited on a substrate between electrical contacts to function as a gas sensor for hydrogen.

Abstract: Hair regrowth is promoted by positioning one or more electrodes closely proximate a subject's scalp. A low voltage positive or negative polarity signal having a selected frequency of either 7.86 or 15.72 hertz is applied to the electrode(s) for about twelve minutes. The subject undergoes a hair regrowth treatment cycle spanning a period of about thirty-two weeks during which one or two of the treatments aforesaid are applied per week.
