  • Patent number: 4876961
Abstract: An ammunition unit has a fuze which includes an electrical trajectory safety device for preventing arming of the ammunition unit within a trajectory safety distance. An arming igniter actuable by the electrical trajectory safety device activates a movable portion for execution of an instantaneous movement to move a bursting cap disposed in the movable portion into an arming position in register with the initiation detonator included in a detonation chain and actuable by an impact or a proximity fuze contact. The movable portion is lockable by a locking pin, which is actuable on a retardation of the ammunition unit caused by a first hit of the ammunition unit against a first object located within the trajectory safety distance. Upon actuation, the locking pin locks the movable portion to prevent it from executing the instantaneous movement, even if the first hit were to cause mechanical action on the electronics which effects actuation of the arming igniter.

  • Patent number: 4846071
Abstract: A supporting cupola is provided for the propellant of a base-bleed gas generator for a projectile, shell or the like. The supporting cupola is arranged in the discharge aperture of the gas generator and provides a reduced gas outlet area from the base-bleed combustion chamber during launch of the projectile. The supporting cupola is made of a material which is easily eroded by the hot combustion gases, such as magnesium. The reduced outlet area increases the pressure in the combustion chamber during the acceleration stage of the projectile so that an improved ignition of the propellant and reduced risk of extinguishment is obtained. Due to erosion of the cupola material the outlet opening area increases with time providing a regressive burning rate of the propellant which means an increased base-bleed effect with respect to the firing range of the projectiles.

  • Patent number: 4798123
Abstract: A rapid-fire automatic gun is provided with a first magazine for a smaller number of rounds, and a second magazine for a greater number of rounds. The magazines include first and second round advancement members. The first of the round advancement members is controlled by the automatic gun itself, therefore round advancement speed, in the first magazine, is dependent upon the gun firing rate. The second round advancement members is driven by a driver which provides a maximum round advancement speed in the second magazine, for example 300 rounds per minute, considerably less than the maximum round advancement speed in the first magazine. When a difference in advancement speeds of the first and second magazines occurs, a transferring member for transferring rounds from the second to the first magazine provides gap formation in the row of rounds in the first magazine by successively filling them during and after firing.
