Abstract: A contact lens cleaning solution containing an enzyme having proteolytic activity and a surfactant, and optionally also a chelating agent and urea, and a method of cleaning contact lenses utilizing this solution are described. The solution and method effectively remove deposits of proteinaceous material, mucins, lipids and calcium located either on or beneath the surface of the lens.
Abstract: Compositions containing a stable, liquid, ophthalmically acceptable enzyme and methods involving the combined use of these compositions with a polymeric antimicrobial agent are disclosed for the simultaneous cleaning and disinfecting of contact lens. Methods for a daily use regimen are also disclosed.

Abstract: Novel polymerizable yellow dyes are disclosed. Additionally, novel and known dyes are used to block or lower the intensity of blue light transmitted through ocular lenses and other windows.
Abstract: A fiberoptic illumination system having an attenuator with a "multiple wedge" aperture that more uniformly attenuates the light beam striking the fiberoptic without changing the color temperature of the light beam or affecting the exit divergence angle of the light beam. The system includes an optical housing design having orthogonal lights paths that allows two fiberoptics to be illuminated from the same bulb, two bulbs located in primary and back-up positions, respectively, mounted on a rotating carousel and a retinal protection filter that filters out wavelengths of light harmful to the retina.

Abstract: Compounds structurally related to ethacrynic acid are described. The compounds are useful for controlling intraocular pressure. Unlike ethacrynic acid, the compounds of the present invention are capable of effectively penetrating the cornea. Methods of controlling intraocular pressure via topical application of one or more of the compounds to the eye and topical ophthalmic compositions useful in the treatment of glaucoma are also described.
Abstract: Polyethylene oxide (PEO) coatings providing improved biocompatibility for implantable medical devices are disclosed. The PEO coatings comprise functionalized end-capped PEO which is attached at one end to the medical device. The PEO compounds are then exposed to a high energy source for a time sufficient to cause the PEO compounds to form a cross-linked, insoluble network. These PEO coatings am able to survive ethylene oxide sterilization procedures with minimal loss of protein or cell repulsion ability.
Abstract: A phacoemulsification sleeve having a centering ring isolated within an outer shell. A bellows-like sleeve between the handpiece and the outer shell provides a fluid path for the irrigating fluid.
Abstract: Compounds having both calcium antagonist and antioxidant activity are disclosed. The compounds are useful in preventing or alleviating damage to tissues at the cellular level. Methods of treatment which employ these properties of the compounds and corresponding pharmaceutical compositions are also disclosed.
