  • Patent number: 4212632
Abstract: An arrangement for mounting a cooling cowl on the discharge end of a rotary kiln which allows for radial and axial differential expansion between kiln and cowl. The cowl is mounted on the kiln contiguous the kiln discharge end, with the cowl being positioned radially outwardly of the outer peripheral surface of the kiln to define an annulus between the inner peripheral surface of the cowl and the outer peripheral surface of the kiln through which cooling air can flow. A radially outer set of end castings is supported by the kiln at the discharge end and defines an axial end closure for the annulus. A radially inner set of end castings is supported by the kiln at the discharge end and retains the "nose brick" of the kiln lining. Both the radially outer and the radially inner end castings are supported by the kiln so as to be structurally independent of the cowl.

  • Patent number: 4211524
Abstract: Rolls 9, 10 for a compacting mill 5 by which finely divided agglomerative material 6 is compacted into a sheet 7 produce a pattern of slots 23 in the opposite surfaces of the sheet 7 whereby the sheet is encouraged to fracture into tablet-like bodies 8 of uniform size and shape. The slots 23 are defined by uniformly spaced ridges 21 on the rolls 9, 10, the ridges 21 on one roll 9 or 10 extending transversely to those on the other roll 10 or 9. Preferably the ridges 21 extend circumferentially on one roll 9 and axially on the other roll 10. A form for the ridges 21 is described that enables their easy and complete withdrawal from the slots 23 in the sheet 7 and encourages the sheet 7 to fracture on the medial plane of every slot 23.

  • Patent number: 4209175
Abstract: A seal for use in sealing an annular opening between a stationary member and a rotating cylinder telescopically arranged in the stationary member, the seal comprising an annular ring member circumscribing the cylinder adjacent the stationary member and closing the annular opening. The seal comprises weighting means extending axially away from a back side of the ring member to provide a counterweighting effect which causes a tilting of the ring member, whereby said tilting and the rotation of the cylinder moves the ring member into engagement with the stationary member to substantially seal the annular opening, all in accordance with the teaching of U.S. Pat. No. 3,042,389. In accordance with the present invention, the annular ring member is divided into a plurality of circumferentially extending segments in which adjacent segments are pivotally connected to each other to permit articulation of the segments to accommodate "out-of-round" portions of the rotating cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4209292
Abstract: An arrangement for storing and distributing a fluid on board a rotary reactor such as a rotary kiln. The application discloses a rotary reduction kiln for reducing a metallic oxide such as iron oxide to a lower state of oxidation. A liquid hydrocarbon is used as a reductant in the reduction process for the metallic oxide. The kiln includes a cylindrical chamber adapted to receive the charge of material which is being subjected to the reduction process. A plurality of rows of nozzles are mounted on and supported by the kiln in hydraulic communication with the interior of the reduction chamber. Flow of hydrocarbon liquid to each row of nozzles is controlled by a corresponding flow control valve in accordance with the position of the corresponding row of nozzles relative to the charge of material in the kiln. A plurality of hydro-pneumatic accumulators having the hydraulic sections thereof connected to a common manifold are mounted on and rotatable with the kiln.

  • Patent number: 4208181
Abstract: Flow control valves are mounted with corresponding axial rows of nozzles about the periphery of a rotary kiln. A metering cylinder is mounted on the kiln and rotates therewith. A piston member is moveable in the metering cylinder in alternately opposite directions to deliver a predetermined measured volume of a liquid hydrocarbon such as fuel oil from said cylinder equally in each direction of movement of said piston member. A first hydraulic circuit interconnects each of said liquid flow control valves with a liquid fuel supply and with one end of said metering cylinder on one side of said piston member, and a second hydraulic circuit interconnects each of said liquid flow control valves with an opposite end of said metering cylinder on an opposite side of said piston member and with a plurality of nozzles in the row of nozzles corresponding to the given flow control valve.

  • Patent number: 4204383
Abstract: An automatic height control for a gathering reel used with an agricultural combine of the type in which a floating cutter assembly and a gathering reel are carried by the header of the combine forwardly of the header. The control system of the invention adjusts the height of the gathering reel in closely tracking relation with vertical movement of the floating cutter assembly to thereby avoid damage to the gathering reel and to the cutter assembly due to interference between the cutter assembly and the gathering reel. The control system of the invention may be used in conjunction with a prior art header height control arrangement which responds to a predetermined vertical movement of the floating cutter assembly to vertically adjust the header and thus to vertically adjust the gathering reel carried by the header.

  • Patent number: 4195986
Abstract: To prepare nickel laterite ore for selective reduction of its nonferrous metal oxides, it is comminuted (preferably to 85% minus 200 mesh) and is mixed with comminuted (preferably 100% minus 65 mesh) high volatile, high ash waste coal and a non-gaseous sulfur material. Carbon content of the coal is 50% to 150% of the amount of carbon needed for stoichiometric complete reduction of nonferrous metal oxides in the ore and partial reduction of its iron oxide content. The sulfur content of the sulfur material is such that, together with the sulfur content of the coal, the weight of sulfur is 1% to 1.5% of the weight of the ore. The mixture, preferably pelletized with water, is heated out of contact with air to bring it to 550.degree. C. (requiring 20 to 25 minutes) and is then passed to an aquatic quench. Volatiles in the coal provide reducing gas, and the ash content facilitates wet grinding after quench and provides a good filter bed for subsequent leaching to recover nonferrous metal values.
