Abstract: Growth of a distributed communication system is facilitated through dynamic addition of routing elements. A new routing element may be added to a network of routing elements by first establishing a connection between the new routing element and an existing routing element in the network. The connection may be either wireless or wireline. At least one address is assigned to the new routing element. Each assigned address comes from a pool of addresses maintained at the existing routing element. At least one pool of addresses is issued to the new routing element, permitting the new routing element to dynamically add yet another new routing element to the network of routing elements.

Abstract: Methods and systems for processing an optical signal in a communication system are disclosed. The disclosed methods yield benefits for estimation and tracking of carrier phase of received signals at a digital coherent receiver without the use of differential coding. Specifically, phase ambiguity is removed by calculating the slope of the CPE at a location where the CPE begins to lose track of the received carrier phase signal. As such, a CPE offset adjustment may be applied in accordance with the calculated slope to reduce the number of ones and zeros corrected by a FEC decoder. Thus, the FEC aided CPE scheme may be a feed forward scheme that requires no training.

Abstract: A network system provides network device having a secondary memory that mirrors the content of a primary memory maintaining data structure parameters entries. The integrity of each data structure parameter entry is tested as the entry is output from the primary memory, such as by using a parity test. If an error is detected in the entry, a corresponding entry from the second memory structure is select for use instead of the entry from the primary memory. The corresponding entries in each memory are then flushed, updated, synchronized, or overwritten from the each memory and processing continues using the new entries or other entries from the primary memory. In the rare instance that corresponding entries from both memories exhibit an error, then an error notification is issued.

Abstract: A driving directions system loads into memory a limited subset of prerecorded, spoken utterances of geographic names from a mass media storage. The subset of spoken utterances may be limited, for example, to the geographic names within a predetermined radius (e.g., a few miles) of the driver's present location. The present location of the driver may be manually entered into the driving directions system by the driver, or automatically determined using a global positioning system (“GPS”) receiver. As the vehicle moves from its present location, the driving directions system loads into memory new names from the mass media storage and overwrites, if necessary, those which are now geographically out of range. Based on the current location of the driving, the driving directions system can audibly output geographic names from the run-time memory.
